Stop with the Hillary/Keyes comparisons already (like in the linked oped in the newspaper, the Pantagraph). Hillary was on a POWER TRIP -- she pushed local candidates (Lowy and Andrew Cuomo) to the side so she could have the prize for herself. IN CONTRAST, AMBASSADOR KEYES IS RESPONDING TO A CALL FOR HELP FROM AN IMPERILED ILLINOIS REPUBLICAN PARTY. He's on a rescue mission. True, the media in Illinois don't like his decision, they don't want him showing up with a life-preserver - - - but why should he agree with them that the local GOP should be allowed to drown? CONGRATULATIONS, AMBASSADOR KEYES. YOU'VE SHOWN A SENSE OF DUTY BY RESPONDING TO A CALL FOR HELP.
They claimed. In other words, they lied. Everyone knows Hillary chose New York, and she did so because it's the most liberal state in the union. Her chances of winning were therefore extremely high. They didn't need her. She needed them.
In Illinois, it is FACT that Keyes was drafted, not a claim. He was invited, Hillary invaded. There's no wiggling around that difference.
In many ways, since she won the primary, her carpetbagging can attempt to claim more legitimacy than Keyes' carpetbagging.
Oh, so if Keyes really HAD carpetbagged like Hillary, staked out the state, and invaded Illinois months ago with the intention of gaining political advantage, THEN it would be OK!
LOL
Be that as it may, a carpetbagger is a carpetbagger no matter how one contorts the circumstances of the carpetbagging.
I'm using the dictionary definition of carpetbagger. What one are you using?
I try to temper my natural optimism with a touch of realism.
Wow. I found Jack Ryan's behavior revolting. It's really not worth the effort to defend or excuse, no matter his party affiliation.
"Because........ for once the people actually elected someone who honored his promises, one of which was to serve only one term."
I didnt know he made that promise. thanks for answering.
I agree, carpetbagging won't help the Republican party. Just because Hillary got away with it, doesn't mean the Republicans can. Keyes is not good for the party. He is only good for himself. This is one time that being Black won't help. I am not saying that Keyes isn't right about his ethical stance, I am just saying that it is not a politically smart stance to take. Sometimes, in politics, it is necessary to hold your nose and your tongue.
Funny, that's the same one I'm using.
Keyes isn't "presumptuously seeking" anything. The party sought him out. Therefore, that definition doesn't apply to this situation.
So, you're cheering for Obama, then?
That's sick. He had no respect for his wife.
Agreed. But I repeat what I posted earlier. This is a sad commentary on the state of affairs in the GOP in Illinois. There is no reason it should have even come to this draft Keyes movement. I like Keyes, but he has no business in Illinois politics. No good can come out of his running there. Carpetbagging was wrong for Hillary & is wrong here (as Keyes quote will come back and haunt him). Lets be consistent here, people.
And again, there should be no reason a viable candidate from Illinois cant be found to run. The GOP in Illinois is scared of Obama and frankly, that is embarrassing. Im glad I no longer live in Illinois.
This whole affair is embarrassing & embarrassing for the GOP nationally.
I'm sorry, I thought that's what you meant when you said "her carpetbagging can attempt to claim more legitimacy than Keyes' carpetbagging."
Clinton is a carpetbagger. Keyes is about to become a carpetbagger.
You're wrong in the way you interpret your definitions, but let's put that aside. If long-term residency is most important to you, outweighing all other considerations, then, by all means, vote accordingly.
Still, it leaves a blot on his character.
Overall, though, what bothers me is that he knew this would come out, and told the party leaders nothing.
Oh, well. What's done is done.
Ideally, maybe so. But these aren't ideal times or conditions.
So, faced with that, you'll have to decide what you think is most important: the issues or an unwritten litmus test for residency.
If your good conscience dictates that residency is the most important, I respect your choice.
I just feel, personally, that we live in times when our desires for the ideal and for keeping tradition might need to be set aside for the good of the country. Fewer seats in the Senate means a lesser chance for Bush to appoint anyone good to the Supreme Court. The stakes are high.
The Keyes campaign has pledged support for George W. Bush, and we're all wishing him the best"

Luis, heres a news flash for you. The Illinois Republican Party has OFFICIALLY picked Keyes as their candidate. THERE ARE NO OTHER REPUBLICANS LEFT IN THE RACE. The Senate is currently divided 51-49. You either support Keyes or you support Obama. If you want to cast your lot with the crack-smoking socialist from Hawaii, please stop posting on FR and instead visit www.obamaforillinois.com , Im sure hell be happy to have your crossover support to knock off another Republican seat in the Senate.
If youre going to continue giving ammo to Obama though, please stop lying about yourself and claiming to be a broken glass Republican. No sane Republican wants to give the Chicago DEMOCRAT machine any MORE control over Illinois.
The most amazing thing about you anti-Keyes people is way you refuse to accept the candidate because he was choosen by the party committee after the original candidate dropped out, though all you moderates had NO problem when the California RINO Party officially got behind the Austrian liberal when there were STILL other Republicans on the ballot. Who picked Arnold in the PRIMARY? No one! I guess its OKAY for the RINO Party of California to dictate who every Republican should vote for, but the Illinois Republican Party isnt ALLOWED to find a replacement candidate if the original candidate DROPS OUT, eh?
Its also pretty laughable that you question Keyes credentials because he has critized the President from time to time and doesnt agree with him on 100% of the adminstrations agenda. Keyes endorsed Bush in 2000 and has had many favorable things to say about aspects of the Bush adminstration over the years. The Bush adminstration wont give Keyes the time of day and didnt even let him have a speaking spot in 2000, though RINO McCain got one. I would hope they reconsider, but I will vote for Bush regardless.
Besides, in YOUR state, youre backing the Johnny-come-lately RINO who whole-heartily campaigned and donated to Dukakis in 1988, so we know how much value you put behind whether a candidate has always been loyal to the GOP. Now, as you know, I dont like your RINO candidate in Florida one bit, but IF the party nominates him, I will hold my nose and support him like any sane Republican would do. Doing otherwise is called cutting off ones nose to spit in their face.
Finally, we Illinoisans dont need non-Illinoisans to lecture us on Keyes being a carpetbagger. You see, Keyes primary vote in OUR state was one of the HIGHEST in the nation, and he actually won MORE votes in Illinois than four of the also-rans in Illinois from this years Senate primary. A guy who actually won primaries, as held political office, and received over 66,000 votes from Illinoisans has more of a mandate to represent our values than a guy who lost primaries, never held political office, received 19,000 votes, and happens to live here.
One again, its Keyes or Obama. Pick one. If you cast your lot with a candidate who ran to the LEFT of Black Panther Bobby Rush, its your choice. The DNC will be happy to send you a membership card soon.
