Five days into the search for their sister-in-law, Mark Hacking's brothers made a decision that could help seal his fate.
Cognizant of their promise to help find Lori Hacking, they confronted Mark in his hospital room the morning of July 24, pleaded for information and gave him the afternoon to think it over.
They returned that night. And, they said, he confessed.
"My brother and I sat and hugged him for about an hour, and then we went home," Scott Hacking said Wednesday.
In an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Scott Hacking confirmed that he and his brother, Lance, comprised the "reliable citizen witness," cited in an arresting document released Tuesday, who prompted police to focus on the Salt Lake County landfill for three straight days last week.
Police resumed the landfill search Wednesday evening.
Scott Hacking said he hopes his brother's information - delivered to police through an intermediary the following day - helps resolve the case.

It's too bad Scott Peterson doesn't have a couple of brothers like this.

Good for them. It must have been so hard for them to do this, but they did the right thing.

Thanks for the ping!
This confession ought to stick, even if it did occur in a mental hospital. I'd still like to know, if that PO box was his and or how long he had the alias.
Is is common practice for people to be admitted under alias'?

What a heartbreaker for Lori's family and the Hacking family. Dealing with the murder of a beloved daughter & daughter-in-law is devestating enough.
Those brothers did the right thing. As a parent, I can imagine they are grieving for the loss of the son they thought they had. To do the right thing does not mean doing the easy thing. I pray God helps both families through this time and the familes can stand together drawing comfort from God and each other.

HACKING'S TRYST
By ALY SUJO
August 5, 2004 -- Lori Hacking's lying husband, charged this week in the death of his pregnant wife, was once sent home from a church mission for seducing a young woman he helped convert to the Mormon faith, a new report says. Mark Hacking, 28, also repeatedly strayed from his church's teachings and hid his secret life from his wife, this week's People magazine reports. His friends told the magazine the burly Mormon also drank alcohol, which is forbidden by the religion, and smoked cigarettes, another taboo.
The magazine reports that Hacking was sent to Canada on a mission several years ago but was sent home because of the sexual relationship. "That's definitely against the rules," said Scott Simpson, a fellow missionary.
(snip!)
A clerk at Maverick told People that Mark stopped by the store several times a week to buy cigarettes.
In another video shot four hours later, Mark Hacking returns to the store alone and is seen examining his hands, CBS News reported.
But Hacking's lawyer, Gil Athay, told CBS, "If you pump gasoline, you sniff your hands. There's nothing unusual about that videotape." Source

Yes, they show a lot of character. That's almost a rarity in these times.

If the man couldn't abide by the teachings of his religion, he should have opted out and drank, smoked and seduced to his heart's content. by lying to his wife, his family and puttting up this charade, he led himself to this crime. I have no pity for him.

Which begs the question: It was purported that Scott Peterson had his brother's driver's license the night he was picked up for murder and that this brother has the bleached hair and goatee like Scott had at that time. I've seen nothing about this "brother" since.

I'd like to think that for everyone here, if a family member commited a heinous crime, they'd be the first to drive them to the police station.
I was hoping this would happen. They done good.

I absolutely give them and their family credit. By all reports this is a good family; and the fact that they never came out decrying any injustice against 'the husband' or insisting on his 'innocence'; and at this point, still have not tried to make excuses for him; is a huge relief.
Son, notwithstanding, the response. . .the support maintained by Scott Petersen's family is neither admirable nor reasonable. IMHO!

"He's anxious, he's fearful, he's frightened," Athay said. "But I don't think that's unusual for a person who's not been in jail before and is facing the kinds of charges he's facing."Guess he never thought about what Lori was feeling as he killed her. Punk had to kill her in her sleep or she'd have had a chance to fight back. He needs to fry.

I think they told him about all the evidence. They just want the body. An autopsy will give the conclusions.

So far, I don't think so. If he has, they haven't told the media.
