Too many changes
Free Republic ^ | me

So many changes. I am sure that they are great. But I can't navigate FR like I used to. I feel so helpless, like John Kerry in a real war zone. Things are indented, and it looks like something is reading my mind (or trying to).

Am I alone? This is not a complaint, just a global obesrvation.

"My computer doesn't have the number of hits for each thread. Probably just the difference in computers or servers"

It's your browser.
When I use Netscape on my Mac, I don't see the page view numbers, but I do on Safari and IE.

Well, I see your point, but I disagree.

There isn't a GUI that I am aware of that utilizes a blinking, bold, colored font to get a user's attention. Every mail reader program will, by default, bold the Inbox folder; that's pretty normal. "Tracking Items" in a document will be in a different color; that is useful and adds value. I can't think of any GUI that bolds, colors, and blinks when there is new or differentiated items..

I really like the bold, red; it definitely adds value to the page. That really jumps out, much better than the bold navy that used to be there.

And, I'm sorry, I think the blink adds no value at all. For instance, on the page that I am writing this post, the solid, bold, red "Loose lips sink ships" is very powerful. There is no need for it to blink. I think the same can be said for the home page.

Yeah... I have tried it out all day...and, um...it sucks. My $0.05.

Go to the FR homepage.
Right click on the FR icon.
Select the option "refuse unwanted changes"
Tell it yes, accept.

Now send me money. ;-)

Thanks for all the improvements - any chance of adding a link to 'Post' on the search results page? I always search before posting and it would make life MUCH simpler.

(Always one more suggestion from the peanut gallery, right?)

Actually, I would LOVE to see whether the person to whom I am replying is banned and if so, when that happened.

But I love this place! Thanks JR for a spot of sanity in an insane world.

Another vote for removing blinking here. Blinking scares the jeebies out of me... all my alarms are visual flashing ones... how would you like it if you heard sirens every time you got a new post/mail? :o)

That sounds like the best way to approach FR.

"I LOVE the thing that says how many "views" every post gets, not just the responses."

I'm lost. Where does it show how many views?

Start at the "home" page and pick your forum. You should see this (as an example):

Thank you for the improvements, and of course for all the day-to-day work.

Two comments or questions:

First, I used to have some topics in the sidebar, so I could see right away if there was anything new in those topics. These extra sidebar blocks seem to be gone now, with no way to add them back. I'm probably just missing something.

Second, I agree with those people who asked you to remove the blinking text, or to make whether it blinks user-configurable. Maybe even the color could be user-configurable; the red is too gaudy for my taste.

I don't seem to be alone here. The reason I don't like these alerts to be so obtrusive is that sometimes I don't want to read new pings right away. I'm busy working on something else, but with an FR window open. Under those circumstances, the continuously blinking bright red is very distracting.

That's interesting. I'm also using a Mac and I am on IE. But I have the first OSX system, instead of Safari. Perhaps it's my program rather than IE. Thanks for the info.

When reading a thread and wanting to return to browse, now when I click on "Browse", I am returned to "all messages". What?!! I was in the News/Activism forum, now I'm getting all messages. Ugh. I hate that. So I have to click back on the News/Activism form. Very cumbersome. Hopefully this will be remedied.

Oh, and my "New Posts" notification doesn't blink. Which is just fine by me.

Thanks, John, for all the hard work you do (and I do NOT mean that in a sarcastic manner).

I apologize. I just went to IE, and the I don't see the numbers. I may have gotten the browsers switched as I was going through them. So it's "no" for IE and Netscape. Yes for Safari. Again, sorry.

I might switch to Safari. Alot of mac users here seem to like it. I've been using Netscape for years. My hubby prefers IE.

Oh, please don't apologize. At least I now know why I can't get the number of hits.
