More financial institutions than previously disclosed may be at risk of attack and an Al Qaeda operative has told British intelligence that the groups target date is early September, intelligence sources said yesterday.

The operative, described as credible by British intelligence, told his debriefers that the attack would take place '60 days before the US presidential election' on November 2, according to a former National Security Council official.

On September 2 President Bush is expected to address the Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden.

Counter terrorism officials are analyzing data from a computer siezed in Pakistan last month to see if financial instutions in addition to the five disclosed last Sunday are at risk of attack, US officials said yesterday.

A US official familiar with the ongoing analysis of the computer said, 'There are reference to other buildings in the Al Qaeda computer data including a picture of the Bank of America building in San Francisco. 'There is mention of other places.'

How about stop issuing visas of any kind, put the visa waiver program on hold, fix the transit visa situation and not let anyone in for a while while we round up the ones who are here and send them packing. It would be reasonable to conclude that those who don't leave when told to are up to no good and don't have our best interests at heart. The problem is the government did nothing after 911 to stop these bastards from entering our country. Calling a halt to all in-migration would allow us to shift resources to the leaky spots along the border where illegal immigration occurs. We wouldn't catch all of them and stop all possibilities of terror, but we would make it easier to identify the terrorists who already are among us. We are spending billions of dollars on security in order to maintain open borders and accommodate THEIR desire to come HERE. This is self-defeating behavior. Of course we can't seal off the borders hermitically and eliminate all threats, but we could do a much better job than we're doing now for a lot less money. And please spare me the lecture about a free and open society. I live in Washington, D.C. and, as of yesterday, it has become, literally, a police state. For this we have our Islamic brethern to thank.

They may not be trying to swing the election. The terrorists may be attempting to kill the President.

I agree that they may not be trying to swing the election because they want Kerry over Bush, which in fact they probably do. I think they want to want to display their power, however that may turn. And yes, you are correct. What better way to do that than to assassinate the sitting president?

I would also expect that they have been accumulating this info for years--why else have people been reporting seeing ME people taking pictures of our infostructure over the past several years? I think what makes this a hot potato now is the recent intelligence we've gained that Al Qaeda is moving to the operational phase using this intelligence that has been gained over the years.

"However, here in the US, a terrorist attack would only swing more voters to W."

I respectfully disagreee. Another attack will be viewed as a sign of deep incompetence, especially given the fact that not one official was fired after the greatest intelligence failure in U.S. history.

I can't help but notice the similarity in this "new" financial system target set with the ending of the movie Fight Club.

accuse several hundred other Freepers of "working for the Kerry campaign or something."

If they're pounding away on that thread, trying to blame everybody but the terrorists for terrorism, do me a favor and send them my message. Thanks

"Another attack will be viewed as a sign of deep incompetence..."

I tend to agree. Rather, it'll be seen as incompetence after the DNC machine chants "incompetence" 24/7 for a couplf of weeks...beginning in the first few hours after the attack.

On the other hand, any action taken will be billed as a "political ploy" by the Democrat propaganda machine, just as is happening now.

The Democrats are taking a real threat that could cause real deaths, and turing it into a political ploy. It's a version of the same Lose Lose Situation they've been using since 9/11/01. They want to tie the president's hands. They could care less about the consequenses.

as i was racking my brain as how a terrorist attack could hurt G.W., this is what i came up with, an earlier attack of a smaller magnitude and then a threat for another massive one if he is elected.

Don't give them any ideas. I hope to God the American people soon realize that electing Kerry would be the end of us all.

>>Another attack will be viewed as a sign of deep incompetence

Timing of the attack would seem to be critical. As one of the pundits said while discussing the recent Homeland Security announcement, if the attack comes a week before the election, I think people will tend to rally round the president. If it comes a few months before the election, then there is time for people to begin asking why the present administration could not stop the attack.

Would Kerry/Edwards do better? HIGHLY doubtful, but considering how many people are swayed by the media w/o using their gray matter, such an attack could be used by the lefties to get a considerable number of people to vote for Lurch.

Yep, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. I say he should let them attack. Seems everyone will blame him whether he tries to protect us or not.

I question this, too. God Forbid anything happen to W, but do you really think the terrorists want him dead? I mean, they do but then Cheney would be President. I have my thoughts that if Cheney were President, and had free reign and didn't have Bush as his boss, he'd be even harder on terrorism than Bush has been. I would think the terrorists know that, but perhaps not.

Your worried about blame? Are you serious? I guess you didn't lose any loved ones or friends on 9/11.

Yeah just let them attack. Don't worry if a few of us 'little people' die. Make sure blame is not assigned, because oh boy, that would be bad. Unreal.

A large attack on NYC during the GOP convention would certainly not help Bush. I have thought that an attack would come slightly before or during the GOP get together. That would be the best timing.

For our enemies to win they must defeat us and our allies. They have already defeated the Spanish and other lessor allies. In order to defeat us they must defeat the party that is willing to fight (GOP) to defend us. So one can easily conclude that what ever attack happens it's target will be the GOP.

Well if Al-Q is following the methods of the Assassins ... they are trying their best to kill him.

IIRC the Secret Service's worst nightmare is a skilled assassin that is willing to die to take his target with him. That is what they are up against.

Boortz can go to hell. If we can't have a terror alert with this kind of specific information; the arrests, the data from the laptop, etc - then the whole homeland security system of alerts should be eliminated. What good is it, if the only time you can be "allowed" to use it by the liberal media - is when the attack has already occurred.

Was it base on old information or current information?

It really doesn't matter, considering that the guy who was arrested likely shared the information with others, and that info could be completely updated now. Besides, it's been said that the info is a mix of old and new.

My mistake, but your post sounded cold-hearted when attached to a thread about a present-day terror threat, esp since the post you were replying to had to do with the ending of Fight Club.

Perhaps your post would make sense on the Asa Hutchinson thread instead of here.

and there have been more arrests in Pakistan, we still do not know who they are. A rather large roll up is in progress, and intel is being gathered.

I heard Ridge this morning from the Citibank building in Manhattan (not sure if there was a thread on it, it was carried live on NYC radio) - he was very good, addressed the new york slimes allegations about the "old" data.

My post was a flame aimed at tinfoil hat poster, who might have understood it. I don't know though, because he/she hasn't replied. I'm not familiar with your screen name, and it's glaringly obvious you're unfamiliar with mine. I suggest you back off.
