More financial institutions than previously disclosed may be at risk of attack and an Al Qaeda operative has told British intelligence that the groups target date is early September, intelligence sources said yesterday.

The operative, described as credible by British intelligence, told his debriefers that the attack would take place '60 days before the US presidential election' on November 2, according to a former National Security Council official.

On September 2 President Bush is expected to address the Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden.

Counter terrorism officials are analyzing data from a computer siezed in Pakistan last month to see if financial instutions in addition to the five disclosed last Sunday are at risk of attack, US officials said yesterday.

A US official familiar with the ongoing analysis of the computer said, 'There are reference to other buildings in the Al Qaeda computer data including a picture of the Bank of America building in San Francisco. 'There is mention of other places.'

My prayer is going to be that someone with absolute grit pulls the peoples of NY and NJ tightly together in an all out citizens' effort to maintain a vigilance like our nation has never witnessed.

Fuggedaboudit. Part of the problem with poor border security and lack of response to citizen tips about dubious moslems is that it saps the public's morale. Until we fix those problems, nobody will respond to a call for true vigilance.

I share an office with a lunatic liberal, and if there was a terrorist attack, to her, it would be PROOF of how badly Bush has handled "this whole Iraq debacle." (their words, NOT mine)

The problem lies in your own words -- "lunatic liberal." She wouldn't vote for Bush if he was the Messiah. I think the voters in the middle may sway his way, depending on how it was handled by the administration.

That being said, I hope it doesn't happen in the first place!

Probably true. It should NOW be evident who the murderers want to see in the White House. There sure wasn't any danger signs for the dimocrats hoot n' holler.

"But can somebody explain hos this years-old specific info -- stuff like pedestrian traffic flows, vehicle traffic flows and escape routes would be relevant now when all of that has changed, some of it in response to 9/11?"

Uh....turn on the TV and watch the news. It will be explained with pictures. Not all this information is old. That's a lie. It's old info combined with update, new info, because it was an ongoing cinspiracy to attack.

"Seems as if it would be next to useless at this point"

What do you mean by useless? The plan outlining the use of airplanes to divebomb US buildings was found on laptops seized in the Phillipines in 1995. The Clinton administration didn't follow it up. Therefore no new, relevant information was discovered until right before the attacks...and even THAT was unspecific.

If we don't step up security, whatever terrorists are here will carry out their attack...WITH extra security, they may not be able to pull it off. This isn't rocket science. Al Qaeda is patient. The Islamakazis still want to kill us.

I don't believe that.

Especiallly if an award is offered for information that leads to arrest.

We are all at war.

Considering the nature of the latest information, detailed information, it seems a natural to include those most likely to suffer should a strike occur.

We all like to be a part of something that serves all.

An orchestrated effort to enlighten and help these millions of good, good people heighten their awareness EMPOWERS them...allows them to feel everyone is equally concerned and aware of the possibility of terrorist attacks.

Of course it means extra kook reports....but YOU NEVER KNOW. And it sure as hell makes it harder for the terrorists to move about un-noticed.

I believe that at one time, all September 11 hijackers were in this country legally.

"What was the enviro's main complaint?"

It'll harm wildlife, interrupt migration patterns and in general destroy the balance of the ecology.

ONCE the decision is finally handed down in however many years, whoever's president at teh time can override it - if the ruling is no fence - on the grounds of national security.

we could do a much better job than we're doing now for a lot less money

I agree, this is what bothers me.

I'm not sure any of us outside the inner circle really know enough to decide whether the stepped-up security is warranted now, but I sure hope it is, given the amount of our money it's sucking up. As Boortz said this morning, every time we go to orange alert, federal, state and local authorities spend millions and maybe tens of millions more per day. And much of this is essentially an unfunded mandate on localities.

"If we don't step up security, whatever terrorists are here will carry out their attack...WITH extra security, they may not be able to pull it off. This isn't rocket science. Al Qaeda is patient. The Islamakazis still want to kill us."

Yes they do, and if you truly think beefed-up security will stop them from hitting somewhere, sometime, then I've got this bridge... Extra security might stop tomorrow's attack, or the one planned for three months from now, or it might even mean the attack will take fewer lives, all of which is a good and desirable thing, but even countries with security like that in Israel can't stop terrorist attacks.

I didn't say your post had anything to do with terrorism. Read my post again - I said your comment was in response to my "enough with the Clinton bashing" comment. Don't let your point, that Clinton sucks, get in the way of your reading comprehension.

FWIW, to my knowledge, I've always been on the same page with you Coop, but on this we obviously differ.

You think it's whining to hope to God that people would put some of this energy toward solutions rather than complaining about the past? I'm not saying to ignore the past, because we can learn from the past, but stop bitching about it... Every bitch about Clinton on this forum is preaching to the choir. We ALL agree that Clinton sucked. We got it, I get it, we ALL get it. Enough already.

What are we going to do to make sure Bush gets re-elected? Bitching about Clinton isn't going to do it. Nor is bitching about Clinton going to stop terrorism. If you want to bitch about Clinton, do it to a DEM who doesn't already agree with you -- WE all agree with you -- you're not going to change our minds to hate Clinton because we already do -- so go change a Democrat's mind with all that energy because I'm sick of reading it every third post.

There's no easy solution
I don't think it would be easy, but we could do more then we are doing.

Like searching only 2 middle eastern flyers per flight?

Even when there are 13?

This is not doing all we can do.

I have rented to many illegals from Mexico, who get deported only to return within 2 weeks.

Its much to easy to cross these borders.

What's funny about this thread is everyone complains about this yet no one can offer any real solutions.

I hear lots of solutions but its getting the elected officials to listen that seems to be the problem.

I thought that was Bojinka... am I wrong? Bojinka didn't involve buildings.

Thanks.

They could take what they've learned about wildlife and migration patterns from a certan pipeline to our north and put that to use or improve upon it for our borders.

Wildlife are adaptable - witness Deer in cities.

And my reading comprehension skills do seem to be up to speed:

Coop: I love it < / sarcasm > when folks try to blame everybody BUT the terrorists for terrorism.

BCA: And frankly, that was my point yesterday (was that yesterday?)

" They say it will destroy the environment and harm wildlife."

ROFL.. So instead they tie it up in court. The forests burn, destroying the environment and harming wildlife.

Typical left.
