More financial institutions than previously disclosed may be at risk of attack and an Al Qaeda operative has told British intelligence that the groups target date is early September, intelligence sources said yesterday.
The operative, described as credible by British intelligence, told his debriefers that the attack would take place '60 days before the US presidential election' on November 2, according to a former National Security Council official.
On September 2 President Bush is expected to address the Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden.
Counter terrorism officials are analyzing data from a computer siezed in Pakistan last month to see if financial instutions in addition to the five disclosed last Sunday are at risk of attack, US officials said yesterday.
A US official familiar with the ongoing analysis of the computer said, 'There are reference to other buildings in the Al Qaeda computer data including a picture of the Bank of America building in San Francisco. 'There is mention of other places.'

The easist thing to say to that? Screw them. Countersue. File billions of dollars in lawsuits against the organizations. Tie them up in court and make them spend millions defending their positions.
They will get the hint. People still fail to realize that we beat Communism because they could not afford to keep up. We should do this to all the anti-American organizations. Fight fire with gasoline. Guarantee they will look for the extinguisher.
Hey, I agree with you 100 percent. In fact, countersuits HAVE been filed. It's a recent trend that began with the US Forestry service filing suit against the Sierra Club for litigating so much they caused conditions that led to devestating wildfires. The government is new at this, but at least trying.
You also pointed out the problem with your own solution: "tie them up in court". Things stay tied up in court for YEARS, preventing implimentation for YEARS. While people whine that the evil, Soviet-like gubmint of GW Bush isn't doing anything it should be doing.
And THEY can build the wall. ;-)
Actually what they want to do is to destroy America as an actor in world affairs, as OBL and his loonie followers have stated repeatedly.
After that they take Saudi, destroy Israel, and create the Caliphate.
But I think we're tougher than anyone else in the world imagines. Our ancestors left their old countries for a new idea and that idea is a powerful one that still motivates us today.
I guess tying them up in court would be used as a tactic to get them to back off. There really are ways where organizations like the sierra club and the government can work together. Both groups really need to pick what is important and negotiate to do what is both right and what would benefit society.
Cutting away old growth forests is an example of both preserving newer forests and being able to create an economy for lumber. Both groups win.
Unfortunately, the SC tied it up in court, nothing got done and in the process we lost millions of acres of great forest that can never be replaced.
The only part that sucked was Babs house not burning to the ground with her in it.

Careful. Don't let your anti-Kerry bias cloud your brain about what the terrorists want to do.
They want to kill Americans, period. The DNC would have been a good target, whether they want Bush OR Kerry to be elected. It was a gathering of our "leadership" - a very prime target.
And if our security agencies weren't concerned about a possible terrorist attack against the DNC, they wouldn't have turned it into a fortress. Obviously there was reason to be concerned that we, the public, hadn't heard about. But we are hearing about things now because of the siezed laptop - siezed on July 25.
It would be a mistake to think Kerry and his cohorts are safe whereas Bush and his bunch are in danger. We're ALL in danger because we're all Americans and "infidels." We all need to understand this, and we all need to come together as AMERICANS to fight the war on terror... just like we came together as Americans to help after September 11.
The Berlin Wall was primitive. It relied on being an unbreachable barrier. That isn't needed.
Modern prison fences could not withstand, for example, a truck driving through them. But they would automatically report the location and extent of that kind of intrusion. Nobody builds 30 foot high prison walls anymore.
The point is: Modern barriers and intrusion detection systems are resilient. When they are attacked, they don't just break, they call for help.
You can theorize any level of resources for terrorists, but the fact is that Israel is successful in using fences and sensors against the same terrorists much closer to their homes and their sources of support. We could be successful, too.
Shudder is right. It would absolutely kill me to think of anything happening to Bush or any of the fine men and women who serve with him.
It will eventually...once the leftist groups finally realize they might actually NOT WIN a lengthy lawsuit. However it ties us up as wel.
As for the Sierra Club, that's a topic for an entirely different thread. I only used them as an example of how we are beginning to use the organized leftists' own actions against them for a change.
Did any of the Sept. 11 hijackers come across the borders or did they come in legally?
Oh wait...the Sierra Club is pertinent to this thread. They filed one of the lawsuits against building the fence. They say it will destroy the environment and harm wildlife.
And frankly, that was my point yesterday (was that yesterday?) when I said "enough with the Clinton bashing."
(To which, you said "how Dem-like of you"... and to which I never got around to replying - "bite me"... but I digress...)
We agree on this - terrorists are responsible for terrorism, not whomever is in charge at the time it happens. If that were the case, then Bush is responsible for 9-11... and we ALL know he is not.
Failure to prevent something from happening is not the same as being responsible for it happening in the first place. As Bush said, we have to be PERFECT in stopping every single terrorist attack - they only have to be perfect ONCE. And our security forces never get credit for having stopped anything because we never hear about the ones that didn't happen. Someday I'd sure like to know about them all though. :-)
But can somebody explain hos this years-old specific info -- stuff like pedestrian traffic flows, vehicle traffic flows and escape routes would be relevant now when all of that has changed, some of it in response to 9/11? Seems as if it would be next to useless at this point.
No, my post had little to nothing to do with terrorism. I took issue with you complaining about those of us who still refer to the corrupt, disbarred, pathologically lying, impeached rapist by the titles he's so richly earned.
Actually, my Dem-like response referred specifically to your "Can't we just move on???" whine.
Thugs, punks, cowardly terrorists will have a difficult time moving thru NY and NJ if people take the offensive, go on with their daily lives, but take seriously their job of being alert like never before.
The Amber Alerts WORK because citizens are alerted.
The NY/NJ folks need a mantra and great resolution. Teamed with the professionals already working-terrorists lose a great deal of their ability to move in the shadows.
ANd it would not hurt for every building edifice to inform those who work there that 'inside' terrorist work is a possibility. To remain alert and to be willing to report any unusual activity that just doesn't seem inline with business as usual.
If the brave souls, who thanks to cell phones, on that tragic flight that ended in Penn. can ban together and work to prevent a greater tragedy...so can the good patriots of NY and NJ work together to rout out these tiny little evil impotent cowardly terrorists who like to kill the unarmed and unsuspecting.
These citizens can change the 'unsuspecting' part. WE are ALL at WAR.
I disagree with this. I believe it will make us staunch Bush-supporters even more sure of our convictions, but we only have one vote, no matter how strongly we feel about it.
I share an office with a lunatic liberal, and if there was a terrorist attack, to her, it would be PROOF of how badly Bush has handled "this whole Iraq debacle." (their words, NOT mine)
So I think a terrorist attack is more likely to swing people AWAY from Bush than towards him. After all, for those with their heads in the sand, they can say "First September 11, and now THIS, and both on Bush's watch? I'm not voting for Bush!!"
I didn't know this, but I don't live in a border state and only started caring about this after 9-11....
What was the enviro's main complaint? Unless the fence vaporized every living thing that came within a few feet of it, what was their gripe?
