ESPN just aired a TV commercial for Red Stripe, a beer from Jamaica. The ad showed the spokesmen for Red Stripe, a black man dressed in formal wear, in a tropical bar with the quintessential clunky white guy.
The black guy is cutting some dance moves while the white guy makes laughably bad attempts to emulate him.
Then the black guy hands the white guy a Red Stripe, and the white guy's dance moves improve a bit.
The ad's tag line: "Red Stripe. Helping white men dance since [didn't catch the date]."
Can you imagine the outrage, calls for boycotts, national press attention, Senate investigations, UN Resolutions, expressions of grave concern by John Kerry, etc., etc., etc. if an ad ever turned the tables with a negative stereotype about blacks? "Acme Widgets. Helping black men [fill in the blanks]."
The hypocrisy and double-standards of political correctness ride again.
You've got mail
Did you send a private message? If so it hasn't arrived.
I did but like an idiot I sent it to myself.Hold on a sec.
Perfectly understandable, you've been up all night. LOL
Actually, I think that's pretty damn funny, nothwithstanding the double standard. Of course, I love racial, ethnic, and religious humor as long as everyone is picked on equally. If they can't take a joke, then F'm.
Well, now the rest of us are curious.
I have no problem with the joke. It's the double standard that's infuriating.
How about this: A couple of white guys and a black guy are sitting around talking and the black guy has one of the worst cases of ebonics you've ever heard. The black guy then chugs down a BC Ale and suddenly starts talking perfect Queen's English. The slogon: "BC Ale, helping black guys speak English since 1762."
If you'll look out your window, you'll see the first of Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition members assembling for the protest.
Where can I get some of that stuff, I could use it ;-)
Relayed a Bobby Slayton bit,a comic not exactly known for being "racially sensitve"...Oh what heck...Slayton at Comic Relief circa 1996 or so "You can make a movie called White Men Can't Jump, but you'll never see one called Black People Can't Shut the F*** Up In A Movie Theater"( Did'nt want to offend anyone)Hopefully no one is.
You know that harassing white men is the last PC approved bias allowed.
That's the point Slayton was making.
Actually, they're lining up for some BC Ale.
Oh.
Exactly. It turns up everywhere in popular culture, as in other TV commercials or sitcoms in which white guys are portrayed as hapless bumblers who can't see beyond their beer cans, power tools and cars.
Actually I think that those Red Stripe ads are pretty funny. I love the one where the Jamacian pitch guy is setting up a fight between him and Lennox Lewis until he sees him pounding the stuffing out of the heavy bag, looks at his partner who shakes his head NO and he then says the "Fight Cancelled!" instead we will cook fried plantains! Funny stuff.
LOL
