I am filling out a survey about gun ownership and have been asked about a .50 cal BMG rifle.
Could you please explain to me what this is and what it's used for?

agreed. That was what I was saying when I satated that they were unidentified. I know one of the guys there actually and, while friends, we argue over this issue all of the time. He sees it from a Law Enforcement side, I see it from the homeowner side. Small wonder that Weaver sued and won damages.

Huh? How do you square those two? And I have found zero contemporaneous historical evidence that the 2nd can be interpreted as the first point. I'd like to see some text, either from the Federalist Papers or from letters/speeches by the Framers that they intended the 2nd to be a collectivist state right and that the word "people" in the 2nd has an entirely different meaning from the word "people" in the other amendments in the BOR.
I just checked their website and they seem to be on our side. A lot of the gun-grabber groups have started using terms like responsible and violence prevention to mask their objectives. MCRGO's name raised red flags for me but the group is most likely OK.

Well said. I have read many many articles from law minds stating that the framers used "people" to mean THE PEOPLE and when referring to the State, always used STATE. I have a hard time understanding why libtards cannot grasp that simple fact.

The .50 BMG (gun) is the Browning MachineGun.
The .50 BMG is the also the name of the cartridge for that gun, so it can be confusing.
You as a private citizen cannot order a new .50 BMG for purchase. You can buy legally a single shot or semi-automatic rifle chambered for that cartridge.
A lucky hit that took out the engine of a large aircraft would not bring it down. A fully automatic machinegun is needed to really work in an anti-aircraft role. But, you cannot buy one of those new as an individual anyway. Most of them in the military inventory are used on armored vehicles for antipersonnel and attack against opposing forces vehicles.
As far as taking down a plane, a .30 caliber hunting arm of semi-automatic type bought at Wal-Mart would be just about as effective as anything you can obtain in the .50 BMG cartridge. and loads more cost effective.
The intent is to demonize a large caliber gun, then the next smallest until the lowly BB gun is confiscated from Cub Scouts.
Of course that gives us a good idea why the libs hate this thing so much.
Sloth, I don't think those two statements are contradictory...I agree that the second amendment does both.
HLL, I would suggest that the individual right and practicality are contradictory. If the government is to determine what is allowed and what is not, it is by permission, not by right.
Actually, the more important question is what is the practical usage of the Second Amendment? If you think the Second Amendment is about duck hunting, preventing break-ins and plinking at targets, then the .50 BMG is probably more gun than anyone would ever need. If, on the other hand, you think the Second Amendment is about an armed citizenry being the ultimate check on tyrannical government, then a .50 BMG in private hands probably would strike you as a heck of a good idea.
A .50 BMG has a very practical military usage as a sniper or counter sniper rifle. Aside from that, it is a heck of a lot of fun to shoot, in the same way a 1200 cc Kawasaki sport-bike is a heck of a lot of fun to ride. The .50 is not a really useful hunting gun, but then the Kaw is not really a useful form of transportation, either.
It uses the same ammo as the .50 cal MG. The best know is the Barrett. The "One Mile Club" uses them to shoot targets literally a mile away.
Thanks for the serious input. Now that I know what this gun is, and it's not an anti-aircraft gun that someone in the Bush campaign office told me, I will oppose adding additional restrictions of the .50 cal BMG rifles to private citizens.
I asked a simple question. I needed a simple answer. I thank those of you who gave me the answer. I would rather make an informed decision then answer a question of which I know nothing about.
.50 BMG refers to the cartridge, at least in popular usage. John Browning developed several machine guns in various calibers; the fielded, .50 caliber version is the M2.
