HAS SANDY BERGER BEEN CLEARED?

Posted on 07/30/2004 3:19:48 AM PDT by itsinthebag

I just heard on the radio news that Sandy Berger has been cleared of any wrongdoing. Apparently the National Archives is saying that all documents have been accounted for. Has anyone else heard this? And no, this should not be posted under humor! I'm serious, I really did hear this on the morning news just now. WMAL 6:30 here in Washington, D.C., the Fred Gandy Show.

No, he has not been cleared. You have been "spun".

He was cleared on one of many charges he is facing and the news was released to indicate he was absolved of all charges. Not true.

That is really brilliant! Let's vote the bastards back in so we will really have something to complain about! Why can't you be "comfortable" with your current level of angst?

If you ever got inside a Government agency is DC you would know that the bastards are still in charge. Mrs. Submareener spent almost two years working at a government department and you would not believe the Bush bashing that begins two levels below the Secretary.

There have been multiple reports originating from employees at the National Archives that he removed documents from the archives. Some were marked by employees and those disappeared. If these reports are false, I'd be surprised.

Whether or not he returned everything he took is hardly "cleared". These would be big time felonies.

itsinthebag is right about everything except his name is Grandy not Gandy. And He is NOT "staunch". He's a moderate.

I agree with you, and am reporting what was told to me.
People are palpably disappointed about the disinterest extending
from the leaky borders to the crooks in federal agencies
who have been left there for four years.

The National Archives, huh? With or without the Toon appointee at the helm? Has that guy left yet? In any case, I wasn't aware that the Archives had a criminal division.

I think it's much more serious than Watergate. Aside from probably being an attempt to do something of use to a political campaign (in this case, giving Kerry his "security recommendation" points), it is also an attempt to alter the historical record and may also have compromised national security. One report mentioned that Berger's calls from the NA had been picked up by an "unauthorized agency." In addition, his safe apparently also held stolen NA material related to Bill Clinton's Middle East "peace process."

So I honestly don't see how it can just quietly go away.

You're right, I had forgotten how Watergate moved in fits and starts and was a very slow process. The only thing that could make this go away is having Kerry elected in November.

They will not vote at all out of discouragement.

Then I have one word for them: Incoming!

The taking of the documents is the crime. Returning them does not mean he did not take them.

Rush had a very good point. Even if he did return them, were they the same ones that he took?

I read that interviews for a new head of the NA began in September, just after it was confirmed (after a tip from a lower level employee, I imagine) that Berger was taking docs. The resignation of the former head was "accepted" by Bush in December. I assume one of the conditions of his being allowed to resign and not, at that time, face prosecution was his cooperation in the sting that eventually got Berger. The old NA head must have been the one who gave the order from the top to let Berger do whatever he wanted in the Archives.

The former director was a Clinton political appointee, a former CO governor who had lost his reelection, and who had never done anything but be a politician. The current candidate is a non-political appointee with a long history in non-profit management.

Oh, and guess what: the Dems are holding up his confirmation. Otherwise, we'd already have a new head of the NA. Anybody surprised?

Well, with the Toon appointee at the helm, and having some sway over presidential libraries BTW, I'm sure the NA is doing all it can to get to the bottom of this.

NOT.

Rep. Henry Waxman D(CA) has already written Davis a memo citing partisanship in the matter. They're going for broke in trying to put this one away.

The NA's former head also had something to do with presidential libraries, too. Scary thought there.

Hell, if the Clintons can be "cleared" in Whitewater, Travelgate, Cattlegate, Filegate, etc., etc., what's a few top secret documents between friends' butt cheeks?

If President Bush was like President Washington (who tooking spying seriously)
Berger and the incoming border-crossing terrorists would be already hung.

Davis holds some other party leadership position also. This could really make or break him. He can't blow it.
