Democrats Getting Cocky About Beating Bush
The Newhouse News Service ^ | July 27, 2004 | Miles Benson

The Democrats smell blood.

Convinced that Republican George W. Bush is a wounded president who already may have lost his re-election race, many Democrats are giddy with excitement as they prepare to anoint John Kerry as their nominee.

Even party leaders who warn against unwarranted overconfidence one moment say in the next that victory is in hand.

"Everybody knows it's going to be tight ... but I think the odds are high — 60-40 — that Kerry will prevail," said Convention Permanent Chairman Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico. "We realize there is a lot of anti-Bush sentiment. It's out there and you take advantage of it."

"Absent a mistake by us, Kerry's the next president, declared Bob Mulholland, a Democratic national committeeman and delegate from California.

"I'm pretty conservative, but I think the rest of the party thinks Kerry has it won," said Lawrence Gates, the Democratic state chairman from Kansas. "I think Bush caused it. It's black and white. Bush has polarized the country, and become more arrogant when he should have taken a humble pill."

"Bush blew it in a myriad of ways," said Kentucky Democratic State Chairman Bill Garmer, listing job losses, the budget surplus swallowed by new deficits, and "a war that won't work because all the reasons put forth turned out not to be true."

"It's more like it's ours to lose than to win now," said Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Firefighters, as he arrived at a convention party at Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's family compound in Hyannis. "Everybody in the party is now optimistic. I've never seen the party as energized, united and enthused."

It's not unusual for political leaders to boast about their prospects at their party's national convention, but this year many Democrats appear to be believe their own hype.

Yeah, the 2002 Congressional elections really established that Democratic mandate.

Because of the media, are there many people who voted for Gore that now will vote for Bush? It doesent seem so to me. That means he has to win over new voters and Evangelicals, etc who didnt vote last time. Tough....

The Presdential television debates are on the horizon, and we must be diligent in making sure CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, etc., do not give Kerry a bigger part of the t.v. screen, than Bush. I remember something about them doing that in the past...shortchanging the Republican candidate out of equal t.v. screen coverage during a debate. Let them know WE ARE WATCHING EVERYTHING !

Rush pointed out this morning that even political scientist Larry Sabato says Kerry will be the next President. Sabato says, Democrats are convinced GWBush will be defeated.

I think we might have a case here of over confidence on the part of the librats.

It's still PresBush`s election to lose. The Bush-Cheney campaign is hanging its reelection hopes on their efforts in the closing 13 weeks of the general campaign. With something like $155 million left to spend, Bush-Cheney has designs on an all out blitz to get back in the lead. All things being somewhat equal at this point, the election is far from over.

They will lose. I bet Bush is 100% certain he is going to win. If you don't believe in yourself, you will fail.

Bruck's hype: Bush landslide.

My dear mom, an ardent democrat, won't vote for Bush but can't bring herself to vote for Kerry. He just doesn't inspire her. I advised her to vote for Nader.

A little Scripture is appropo:

"Therefore, let him who thinks he stands, take heed, lest he fall."

Of course in this case, we want them to fall, so let them keep thinking they've got it in the bag.

It wouldn't be the first time Bush was misunderestimated.

It's all spin. If they say it early and often then the masses will accept their message as truth. They are following Joseph Goebbels' strategy.

It was funny to hear McAwful's speech last night--raving about the leaps and bounds the Dem party has made technologically--leaving the party in the best shape it's ever been in! (He said the same thing in 2002.) I promised to deliver and I did, he went on to say. I thought his job was to deliver winning candidates.

Bob Mulholland also swore that Gray Davis was going to survive the recall vote. He is known by Hugh Hewitt as "the Yosemite Sam of California politics".

and when GWB wins big on Nov. 2nd, are they going to finally realize that with Clintoons around, the only message that gets out is how bad they are, and anyone with them must be bad, too....

I'm worried, but history has shown W usually saves a trump card or two when needed. He has laid pretty low while getting absolutely creamed so far this year. I have to believe he is going to open up a can soon.

Everything being the same, you now have a state where a Jew is not on the ticket, the military vote will be counted and no one will say that Gore won Florida at 4:00 in the afternoon.

Taking that into consideration, I think the key state in this election is Ohio.

Ohio to Kerry will be what Tennessee was to Gore. Win the state you win the election.
