Most US voters know little about Kerry: Poll

A majority of US voters know little about Demoratic presidential candidate John Kerry and want him to make his stand clear on key issues like economy, Iraq and war against terrorism, a new poll said.

The poll, conducted by Washington Post-ABC News, suggested that 54 per cent of the voters were unfamiliar with the Massachusetts senator's positions against only 25 per cent who felt the same about Republican President George W Bush.

In barely a month, Kerry has lost ground to Bush on every top voting issue in the November 2 polls and a growing proportion of voters considered the President as the candidate who most closely shared their values, the survey said.

"In virtually every measure tested Kerry's image has eroded in recent weeks. He has lost his double-digit advantage as the candidate viewed by voters as more honest and more understanding of their problems," the latest survey conducted just ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Boston which began on Monday.

Even among Democrats, 46 per cent said they were unsure what Kerry stands for.

The proportion of voters who rate Kerry as "too liberal" has increased slightly, from 36 per cent in June to 40 per cent and 49-43 per cent see Bush as the candidate who better reflects their values.

Bush was seen as better qualified than Kerry to keep the US safe and secure by a 54-38 percent margin -- wider than one month ago when it was 54-40 per cent, the poll said.

By increasing margins, the president is seen as better able to deal with Iraq and the war on terrorism and taxes. On two key issues in which Kerry had the advantage two weeks ago, education and the economy -- both candidates were tied, the poll said.

The poll found that Kerry and Bush remained virtually deadlocked, with 48 per cent of registered voters supporting the Republican and 46 per cent the Democrat.

A total of 1,202 people were interviewed July 22-25 for the poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

The Kerry 'too liberal' numbers will only go up.

this is a significant poll right now, when sKerry should be receiving his pre-convention bounce....

very telling - i think that people are just tired of the "Bush-Bashing" as lots of my non-political friends are. A friend of my sisters who was joining us for a barbecue the other day is a HUGE Yankees fan. Well, I just happened to run in the house and passed the TV as sKerry was throwing out the pitch at Fenway Park and mentioned my disgust to my sister when I came out. Now her friend is totally blue-collar, union guy and non-political and he said, "Kerry? That guy seems to flip-flop on everything, I hope he loses. I like Bush."

Memo to RNC - your branding of Kerry as a flip-flopper has WORKED. Now let W work his magic and we'll be done with this.

One more thing - I wouldn't be surprised if this poll is buried and FAST by the nets. They're too high on that DNC Kool-Aid this week to let anything bring them down.

My husband's theory is this:

He says it doesn't matter what polls say now. People will often answer what they "think" they ought to say.

But at election time, when they're in the voting booth, when faced with the known versus the unknown (and this poll clearly indicates people don't know Kerry), even a Democrat may switch and vote for Bush.

I hope he's right.

I conducted a small poll (sample size of 1) and found that the person I asked was unsure of John Kerry's positions on the issues. The biggest problem was that I was asking John Kerry.

I watched part of the convention last night on Fox. I found it really disturbing the depths the Dems were seeking to go in order to be elected. William Bennett was talking about the Dem platform, and said he thought he was at the Republican convention- it is a total lie, just to get elected. Ann Coulter said the same.

Kucinich was on and said 95% of Dems disagree with their platform this year, but after Kerry is elected that can be remedied - in other words, Kerry will lie his face off to seem conservative just to get elected.

I find this so reprehensible.

John Kerry is in that 46%.

How can this be true? I've seen at least 4 other postings here this morning that say Bush is losing the election. ;-)

Well, cadaverous un-dead pols like the Senator from Massachusetts are difficult to read - they tend to wander about like the zombies they are. Leftists on autopilot.

When the numbers are reversed they report a Kerry lead, thus

Bush Edges Kerry By Two

should be their headline.

THIS IS PART OF THE "AMERICA JUST NEEDS TO GET TO KNOW JFingK BETTER, THEN WILL FLOCK TO HIM IN DROVES" SPIN!!!

With the full court press that has been attacking Bush for over a year now and the dismal spring in Iraq, Kerry should be WAAAY ahead of Bush. The Rats are whistling past the graveyard - they know their guy is not happening. Most people - unless they live in a cave - know enough about Kerry by now to decide whether they like him or not. Most people in the world know about Bush and what he stands for. Especially the people living in caves.
