To GOP, He's Dishonoring His Father

Ronald Reagan (news - web sites)'s spiritual heirs will fill the halls of the Republican National Convention in late August, but the Democrats have secured his flesh and blood for a prime-time spot at this month's bash in Boston.

Ron Reagan, the late president's 46-year-old son, plans to use the global platform of the Democratic National Convention to endorse embryonic stem-cell experiments, an area of research that some think his father would have opposed but which his mother supports.

Politically, the booking is a triumph for the Democratic ticket of Sens. John F. Kerry and John Edwards (news - web sites), which promptly trumpeted its ability to attract "individuals from all political backgrounds." Affronted Republicans moved to discredit the famously renegade son, who often disagreed with his family's politics and is an outspoken critic of President Bush (news - web sites).

"I think his speech is a cute little story for convention coverage, but I don't think it's the sort of thing that will influence any voters," said Gary Bauer (news - web sites), a conservative activist and domestic policy advisor to President Reagan.

Summing up a sentiment widely held among conservative groups, Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America called the planned public appearance "sad."

Um, I believe male ballet dancers are referred to as "ballerinos."

I thought it was "balloons."

Or maybe that's just the influence of the picture...

I strongly suspect most voters will be appalled by Ron Jr's appearance at the Democrats Convention, let alone give a keynote address.

Most of us understand "Daddy doesn't love me blues"....but doing this after the death of his father?

Sheesh.....Ronnie Jr's ongoing mental health is the only question thats brought to mind by this stunt.

Yes, stunt.....

Thank you! Very nice column by Mr. Cohen. He and I do not often agree. But he's on the money with this one.

Nancy has been swayed by her liberal son's views.

I don't think so. For one thing, she's not a conservative. More of a moderate. And after taking care of her sick husband for ten years, day in and day out, I have trouble criticizing her for supporting embryonic stem cell research. I believe she's wrong and I'll leave it at that.

I can think of a part of her anatomy that's filled air, but its not her breasts.

No, you are right. Nancy Reagan has been through more than we could imagine and is a brave and caring soul. I don't want to have to go through what she has been through.

Ronald Reagan said she was the one who convinced him to switch parties.

I haven't walked a mile in her shoes.

We'll leave it at that.

Incorrect; our dear young daughter nailed it when she asked, 'Are they gaylords?'

"Democrats have secured his flesh and blood"

They can have Prescott, the ballerina. He is a shrill, arrogant wannabe who can't stand on his own merits.

Republicans have secured his (President Reagan's) spirit and soul. Maureen and Michael.
