STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Winding up her summer tour across Europe, rhythm and blues singer Bonnie Raitt (news) drew thunderous applause at the Stockholm Jazz Festival for dedicating a classic to U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites).
"We're gonna sing this for George Bush because he's out of here, people!" Raitt crowed Tuesday night before she launched into the opening licks of "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)," a cover that was featured on her 1979 album "The Glow."
The song, penned by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, has been sung by several notable performers, including Mable John, Lou Rawls and others.
Raitt's comments resulted in a round of applause and even whistles from among the estimated 3,000 concertgoers at the Swedish capital's annual jazz event held on the banks of the downtown Skeppsholmen island.
Swedes are skeptical of Bush and the Scandinavian country refused to support his efforts in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq (news - web sites) in 2003.
The nine-time Grammy award winner is no stranger to political activism. Her Web site urges fans to learn more about preserving the environment and she was a founding member of MUSE, or Musicians United for Safe Energy.
Raitt finished off her set with several blues classics, original songs, including several from her breakthrough 1989 album "Nick of Time" and John Prine covers.
The Linda Ronstadt thing didn't annoy me-- I just thought it was a really poor business decision, and I won't be supporting her financially.
It's taking it to an entirely different level, in my mind, to make these statements publicly to a foreign audience, especially during wartime.
Maybe I'm a little over the top, but I believe this borders on sedition. This provides aid and comfort to the enemy. It doesn't matter that she's not saying it directly to a bunch of Muslim extremists; they're getting the message anyway.
She and the Dixie Chicks are lucky that the "insurgents" aren't likely to claim in their next beheading video that "we were emboldened by the brave American superstars who so actively work to dethrone the criminal Bush." If that were the case, they'd have to worry about more than a few torched CDs...
Raitt is an example of what happens to someone who doesn't keep up with the news. Her guy, Kerry, was going to put an anti-American spy in as Secretary of State, but he got caught!
Is she still alive? I thought she died years ago. Seriously.
I miss musicians like Falco. Falco was a fun guy.
I was a fan of his before "Rock Me Amadeus" hit #1 in America (I had heard it years before on college radio), and while he was sometimes extremely silly, he was never derivitive or boring, IMHO. I remember the end of the video for "Amadeus," with Falco seriously staring into the camera, only to start giggling.
For better or for worse, among musical figures, only Mozart is bigger in his native Austria than Falco. He was a one-hit wonder in the USA, but he was their Elvis.
"Sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sugar sweet...sh-sh-sugar sweet..."
Another lib to add to the "do not listen to" list. Ho hum....
Ozzy Osbourne? He's always sucked. He couldn't sing a lick with Sabbath, and his career has been saved by studio recording tricks (he doesn't sing any better in concert than he can talk in his living room). If he didn't always have a blazing guitarist on his side (Tony Iommi, Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Zakk Wylde, etc.), he would sink like a stone into rock-and-roll oblivion.
Sweden, like Switzerland, is a supposedly neutral county. During World War II, they were happy to sell Hitler iron ore for his war machine while Switzerland was happy to guard his gold extracted from the teeth of murdered Jews in nazi concentration camps. This neutrality makes them morally superior to us cowboy Americans. </ sarcasm>
,p.
Dang it. I kind of liked some of her music -- (and sometimes I forget that I already knew she was a lefty.) Oh, well. Let's see, who is it safe to listen too? (I don't like country music that much.) Oh, that's right. I can listen to Sinatra. :-)
Bramlett and her daughter Becka who performs a lot here in Music City are both major libs and Becka/Bekka has been active in the MOVEON.Org shenanigans here.
Sorry
Obviously from "The Onion".
smells like someone wants to be freeped!
Who is Bonnie Raitt? [irony]
Great Mrs. Frankenstein picture there!
The article failed to mention that the Swedes didn't send troops to WWI or WWII, the Korean War or Viet Nam. I don't think we lost any sleep wondering if Sweden was going to join the Coalition of the Willing. Denmark did. I think if Sweden were invaded, they would declare neutrality.
Amazing: Kerry aka demoncrate party is willing to sacrifice her ass and every American to get elected meanwhile, President Bush is willing to protect her ass and every American even if it may keep him from getting elected. Go Figure...
