NEW YORK (Reuters) - For weeks, the rumor mills have been working overtime to claim that Oscar winner Meryl Streep based her portrayal of the Machiavellian mom in the remake of "The Manchurian Candidate" on Hillary Clinton.
The rumors are not even remotely true, Streep told reporters over the weekend. But the actress added that she was imitating a person that no one has yet guessed.
Streep plays a U.S. senator intent on seeing her son become president, assuming the villainous role played by Angela Lansbury in the original 1962 political thriller. The remake from Paramount Pictures is slated to open on July 30.
Streep said she was "disturbed" by reports suggesting she had based her performance on the former first lady, now a Democratic U.S. senator for New York.

There's an interview posted on DU saying she based the character on Karen Hughes and Peggy Noonan.
Another person to boycott.

I'm sure you're right, but I am greatly amused that everyone thinks the role is based on Hillary. It must infuriate Streep. Hee.

Regardless of the idiot Streep, the updated version sounds moronic.

Don't assume anything is true until they deny it.

I am confused - didn't the original come out in the late 50s?

I don't know who she based it on, but there is one scene in the promo that has been shown on Fox. The scene is just a flash, but in it, Streep is standing on the right with her left side facing the camera. The woman you see is a dead ringer for Hillary. Each time I've seen it, I think how eerie it is.

I'm not sure of the year but that sounds about right. It is rarely seen on TV and I can't imagine why. It is a superbly cast and chilling movie.

Problem with basing the character on Hughes and Noonan is that both are warm and charming, and Noonan is very attractive.
How you gonna make mean out of that Sophie? Answer is you're not.
Streep knows her craft though, and so does her subconcious; if you want to bring a
page-bound queen of mean to life, infuse it with Hillary "I was named after Sir Edmund before Sir Edmund was known" Rodham's mannerisms and essence. Hillary was C@@t before C@@t was cool.

Thanks, I haven't seen that particular promo yet just various ones with Denzel Washington. I'll watch for the one with Hillary Sreep.
