NEW York Times reply to my email of complaint(Berger News Suppression)
Republican Red herself

Posted on 07/20/2004 2:46:05 PM PDT by Republican Red

Dear (Republican Red);

I can understand your reaction. The Berger story was badly underplayed, but not out of any evil intent. The news broke very late last night, and editors rushed just a few paragraphs into the paper -- all they had at the time.

I can assure you that we will be following this news much more fully in tomorrow's paper and thereafter.

Thanks for writing, and for holding us to a high standard.

Best, Bill Borders, senior editor, The New York Times.

Let it go for today. Judging from your profile page, I'm assuming you read the National Edition of the NYT, which "goes to bed" pretty early the night before. They honestly wouldn't have had much time to throw together much more than a quick rewrite of an AP wire story.

That still doesn't explain why a larger, more nuianced story hadn't been written and released for the Web and wasn't printed in later city editions. Or why the original story left out the fact that some documents had been destroyed. The Slimes dropped the ball and did what they could to minimize and distort the truth.

Let me ask you this. if it were Condolesa Rice who did this, would thye have stopped the presses so to speak to get a story out at least in its later editions?

Well, let's see what they do tomorrow.

The issue is an embarrassing item for the N.Y. Slimes, and they are just waiting to see what the reaction to this story will be reported on by the other "lame" prestitutes, or maybe will it quietly go away and die!!!

Tomorrow's story: Timing of story proves GOP culpability.

Well done... Berger got caught with his pants full and then the NYT got caught with theirs down.

They have to report on it more fully now and thank God for Fox News. Eight years ago their page 16 story would have stayed as such and disappeared completely from the news the next day.

Wow, NY Times replacing Kerry as the "flip-flop"? or can they share the honor together?

Stealing classified documents, not once, not twice, not three times, not four times, but possibly five times....major media won't be able to sweep this under the carpet and spin for the Clintons.

This one has too much of a head of steam. We got the daily blitz of Abu Ghraib, which actually happened last October. That could explain why the media were just too busy to break the Berger thefts, which happened (IIRC) actually last November and the investigation started in January or February.

(Ironically, this story seems closely patterned to Abu Ghraib---which was investigated in January-February but didn't stir much press ink until the photos were released in April.)

I'll have to check the L.A. Times tomorrow. I didn't see the story on the front page.

Best words spoken in Berger's defense thus far:
"He is a sloppy person"

The story broke late? I think I saw it on FR after 8pm, EDT. Newspapers wait up after midnight to report the winner of the SuperBowl and all the Oscars. Is the NYT saying that this story is less important than the winner of the SuperBowl or Best Picture at the Academy Awards?

The NY Times has an early deadline, something like 11 p.m. Eastern. The editor may be telling the truth.

You are correct. Seems as though the Times has been given the go-ahead to use Berger to undermine Kerry for the Clintons. Obviously, I don't have a problem with anything undermining Kerry, we'll have to deal with the Hildabeast sooner or later, it may as well be in 2008.
