President Clinton's national security adviser, Samuel R. Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after removing highly classified documents and handwritten notes from a secure reading room while preparing for the September 11 commission hearings.
Mr. Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI agents authorized with warrants.
Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al Qaeda terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Mr. Berger and his attorney told the Associated Press last night that he knowingly removed handwritten notes that he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants.
He inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio and also accidentally threw away some documents, they said.

So, he returns to look at documents and the staff tells him that a report he reviewed the LAST time he was there is missing, they give him another copy of said report, and now THAT report is missing? No, that's not even right.
He goes back to the Archives and asks to see a report he stole the last time he was there; they tell him that the report is missing and give him a copy -- and now that one, also, is gone.
Is that right?

They will claim that it's political if that happens.

How does one inadvertantly stuff papers down his pants?I wish I knew. I'm still struggling with and also accidentally threw away some documents
This guy was a lawyer. I'm used to practice law as well and there is no way in hell I would stuff papers in my bra or down my pants or 'accidentally' throw away some documents.
Obviously he wanted to have an accident with them and I hope they nail him to the wall for it.

Sounds like Berger is still doing the Clinton Shuffle. He took those papers intentionally and was trying (or succeeded) to hide the most damning of them.

Right. Didn't we say that while he was testifying at the 9-11 Commission?
This happened last October; they searched his house in January; he testified in April.
And all this time, he's been all over TV, talking about how Bush lied and has done the wrong thing in Iraq.

HOW WILL THE NEWSPAPERS COVER THIS?
The newspapers will have to, but it could be a story on the back page. And if by some random chance this ever sees the front page, the headline will read something like "National Security Advisor guilty of shredding 9/11 Information". That way, the general population that really only looks at headlines will assume that the Bush administration is guilty of shredding evidence. This story deserves to be reported but I fear Savage, Limbaugh, and Fox News are the only outlets that will cover this story with the amount it needs to have. CNN will use it as a way to speculate what the Bush administration hid, and whether the Republicans asked Berger for help to shred evidence that showed Clinton warning Bush about Bin Laden.

Almost midnight here. I have to get up for Kiwanis in about 5 1/2 hours. I only have a few minutes left.
I suspect that the Clinton cleaning squad, Kerry braintrust, and Berger legal team are very busy. Because of the internet and talk radio, this event is off to a bigger start than that little 3rd rate burglary into DNC headquarters for some dirty tricks.
To: DustyMoment
No - I don't think that Berger walked off with the only copies of those documents. Note that the archives section "specially marked" the replacements for Berger to take, and those turned up missing as well.
The fact that this is being reported at all says that this is the first shot across the bow by the president to the Clintons. They can call off the left, or face indictment themselves. This little incident has the potential to make the 'toons do the perp walk - that would be a wonderful day.

I've seen Clinton say that about bin Laden; oddly enough, it's not the story he told back during 9-11; but now he's tweaked it.
But I've yet to hear one person in this White House either confirm or deny it.
