Berger investigated for taking classified reports

Published July 20, 2004

ASSOCIATED PRESS
President Clinton's national security adviser, Samuel R. Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after removing highly classified documents and handwritten notes from a secure reading room while preparing for the September 11 commission hearings.
Mr. Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI agents authorized with warrants.
Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al Qaeda terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Mr. Berger and his attorney told the Associated Press last night that he knowingly removed handwritten notes that he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants.
He inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio and also accidentally threw away some documents, they said.

When asked, Mr. Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Snip----

The officials said the missing documents were highly classified and included critical assessments about the Clinton administration's handling of the millennium terror threats as well as identification of America's terror vulnerabilities at airports and seaports.

I think the 'Toon brokered a pardon for Berger. Of course, the deal is only good if Kerry is elected. If Kerry loses, Berger will just be another liability for the Toon. And you know what that means.

I hope you're right, but Berger has two choices ahead... do a Susan McDougal and stonewall or a Jim McDougal and cooperate. Which choice do you think looks more attractive to him?

Naw.. there's two other choices -- he could do a Vince Foster and commit suicide or a Ron Brown and be Arkancided.

Mr. Berger was allowed to take handwritten notes but also knew that taking his own notes out of the secure room was a "technical violation of Archive procedures, but it is not all clear to us this represents a violation of the law," Mr. Breuer said.

Because it's CLASSIFIED information??

I'm still wondering WHY he even bothered to take notes knowing they could not leave the room??

He was a National Security Adviser, was he not??

So if ANYONE should know the procedures .. I would think HE SHOULD KNOW

This is not a complicated land deal involving bank and loan fraud. This is a national security document that was stolen in a conspiracy to coverup. People understand this one.

Or into a portfolio!

This fascinates me:

Mr. Breuer said the Archives staff first expressed concern to Mr. Berger during an Oct. 2 review of documents that at least one copy of the postmillennium report he had reviewed was missing. Mr. Berger was given a second copy that day, Mr. Breuer said.

So, he returns to look at documents and the staff tells him that a report he reviewed the LAST time he was there is missing, they give him another copy of said report, and now THAT report is missing?

I wonder if Berger is going to be able to get life insurance?

I don't have a clue what Karl has been doing behind the scenes, but we won a war and are losing the PR battle. It is his fault. He has just stumbled into a miracle. I hope he knows how to use it.

How is this for a trifecta --- Stewart, Wilson, and Berger all in stripes.

Or, wanna drive the Left really nuts? How about the Big 'A-Man' himself -- Ashcroft unveiling a truckload of indictments? ;-)

Yes, Clinton knew but he did not pass it on to Bush. He will claim he did, and has claimed such. But, quite characteristically, he lied. At the time of the transition, perhaps he thought he could just hide his incompetentence. Then, 9-11 happenened and changed things.
