"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Apollo Anniversary: Moon Landing "Inspired World"

John Roach
for National Geographic News
July 16, 2004
On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 p.m. ET, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the "Eagle" onto the surface of the moon and said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Thirty-five years later, Steven Dick, NASA's chief historian at the space agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C., said that a thousand years from now, that step may be considered the crowning achievement of the 20th century.
"Putting a man on the moon not only inspired the nation, but also the world," Dick said. "The 1960s were a tumultuous time in the U.S., and the moon landing showed what could be accomplished at a time when much else was going wrong."

Armstrong's step was the culmination of a goal set forth by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961. In a speech before a joint session of Congress, the President had announced his objective of "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth" before the end of the decade.

The goal set in motion Project Apollo. Armstrong—together with astronauts Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr.,—lifted off on the Apollo 11 mission on July 16, 1969, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:32 a.m. ET.

About 76 hours later, the spacecraft entered lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin boarded the lunar module, known as the Eagle, for descent to the lunar surface. There, it landed in a region called the Sea of Tranquility at 4:18 p.m. ET.

Armstrong took his historic step six hours later, as millions of people around the world watched on television. The landing drew the largest television audience for any live event up until that time.

Moon Return?

The continuing interest in the moon, according to Dick, is one of the reasons President George W. Bush's Vision for U.S. Space Exploration—outlined in a speech at NASA headquarters on January 14—is so important.

The vision, which has been widely criticized for its funding, appropriateness, and time line, calls for a return to the moon no later than 2020. The idea is to foster further scientific study of Earth's satellite and to use it as a stepping stone to get to Mars and beyond.

"The new space vision will perhaps have an even broader impact than the moon, and certainly a more sustained one," Dick said. "In addition to technologies that will be developed, the new space vision carries on the long American tradition of exploration in the spirit of Lewis and Clark."

Sounds like that one had location.
In North Georgia it seems like everywhere I've lived has had explosive growth and anyone with acreage could become rich overnight. Have always consoled myself with the thought that I would have probably sold right before the huge increase in price and would really be kickin myself for that! We have come out alright with the sale of our homes, just needing a place to live has turned out to be a good investment.

WASHINGTON, July 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) released the following statement today on Samuel R. Berger:

"Sandy Berger is my friend, and he has tirelessly served this nation with honor and distinction. I respect his decision to step aside as an adviser to the campaign until this matter is resolved objectively and fairly."

Paid for by John Kerry for President, Inc.

Posted by by Wolfstar

Can you beleive so far only this from a campaign aide.
look below and this statement is right on the money.

What his statement says is he does not want Berger to give evidence implicating Kerry.

"Sounds like that one had location."

At the time, it was a beautiful area, but of course now is a bit tired, and the farther outlying homes are the posh ones now.

Speaking of 'location,' though, one late afternoon a tornado swept past, just one block west of us. It had the terrible and often described "freight train sound," proceeding on the several blocks to the (then) center of the main avenue, with a park on one side - and the house on the opposite side of that was devastated.

The one person killed in it happened to be a classmate and friend of my then 10-year old daughter.

Oh, btw, those house on the cape and on the islands are pieces of s-i-t.

I have worked on alot of houses down there on the salt water that have been beaten by the weather for years.

What they are paying for is the "priveledge" of living there.

I think this is worth a few million.
of course you know that only rich liberal elites live there..

Hi Mayor, thanks for all the info. Will read all about Berger tomorrow, a bit tired this evening.

LOL, I actually lived on Nantucket one fall/winter, when I was young....college friends moved there and I thought the experience would be fun. It was quiet with the summer crowd gone, mostly locals...fisherman. I wasn't into politics at all at the time. Wonderful memories.

Do you suppose that at least *ONE* of The Clinton Crew could be successfully prosecuted and convicted, in direct proportion to the seriousness of the (alleged) crime??
More than a slap on the wrist?

Lord knows they eluded the Long Arm of The Law over and over - Telephone Operator Gate, Travel Gate. etc. just the first of dozens of unpunished crimes.

It was laughable to hear the Dem Spin on the TV today....I crack up every time I hear Berger say "inadvertent" mishandling - as if his sock top just happened to widen and swallowed a piece of paper he 'dropped.'
LOL

You know what amazes me, LadyX, is the lengths I had to go to when someone requested seeing a Classified, Secret or Top Secret Document in my care at the WPNSTA. They had to practically sign their lives away and then had to be exactly where I put them and then before the left every thing had to be accounted for and ABSOLUTELY NO COPIES were to be made of any document that fell in to the above categories.

(Gritting teeth) That makes me so angry, I could cry, to see a person's reputation besmirched so that piece of white trash can make a couple of dollars.

That was a good read, Lady Maggie; thank you for posting it!

I wouldn't be surprised if every word in the 'Toons book, "My Lie" really is a lie! Whenever Clintoon's mouth is running, lies are pouring out; lying is his whole life! I'm still hoping he will end up in jail for all his crimes, including selling us out to China!

Hope you had a wonderful day, dear Lady!

I'm glad you liked it! I'm not hosting it, I don't think; I'm not completely sure what hosting them is! The only reason I can post pictures at all is because of the kindness of LadyX; she is the most wonderful person! I never dreamed I would be able to do much of anything, but our dear Lady patiently worked with me until I got the hang of it! I'm SO grateful for her help, and the Mayor helped me, too!

I'm thankful to you, dear Billie, and Mama_Bear, and ST.LOUIE1 for the signature graphics you all gave me, and the sweet graphics dear Nan gave me, too! I'm overflowing with Blessings from our Loving Lord and Savior, and I praise His Wonderful Name for His Goodness to me!

Awww rats. No one pinged me. A bit late for this party. I met the Apollo 13 crew and many of my colleagues worked will Apollo. By the time I personally got to the manned side of things, it was with our current space station and the first ever Shuttle launched interplanetary mission.
