AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Clinton had Gorelick, Benvenista and others put on the 9-11 panel to protect him.
Clinton has to send Berger to retrieve certain other documents and 'inadvertantly' lose at least 2 originals.
Makes on wonder how many classified documents got shredded during the latter Clinton days.
Once, as a young and very poor child, I accidentally stuffed a Baltimore Orioles yearbook in my book bag.
At least that's what I told my Dad, who, upon the very first hearing, did not believe me.
Of course I had no David Gergan lightweight to defend me though had it gone down that way my brother could have helped me out. "I just think it's very suspicious, Dad, that this Oriole yearbook shows up in Pat's bookbag right after the year end. That's when they publish these things, right Dad?"
Now my brother would never have done such a thing for me so I had to stick with the yearbook getting "inadvertently" left in my book bag.
Well, hey, it was a Catholic School book bag and the zipper did go from the bottom right side up and around to the bottom left side. I explained this to my father, even showed him the bookbag to better illustrate my theory.
"See, Dad, I was standing below the magazine rack like this," I explained, sitting the bag down as if under an imaginery magazine display. I completely unzipped the thing and opened it wide. "I had just opened the bag to get out a folder and I accidently hit the rack. I guess the yearbook fell in when I hit the rack and I didn't notice it."
Hand to God this is an actual true story. My father is a died-in-the-wool Democrat and taught me how to rig a voting machine when I was 8.
Alas, my Dad, having more common sense than the main stream media, Katie Courac and David Gergan all combined, didn't believe a word of it. Punishment was forthcoming.
You can pull this crap on Republicans because beyond Newt Gingrich, not one of their properly suited and freshly-haircutted selves will ever go on Today and right in the middle of a David Gergan type stream of nonsense, shout out loud, clear and firm "JESUS CHRIST, THE MAN WAS CAUGHT WITH CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS IN HIS PANTS!"
Let Joe Blow public, then brushing his teeth to the background of the TV, hear this coming from a Trent Lott. It'll get their attention.

Who'd have thought a national security adviser would inadvertently vacuum the archives like that?
Who'd have thought Berger wears briefs! I know I never imagined. ;)
"Hey Sandy, are those documents in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?"
(Sometimes I just can't help myself!)
WOOOT i just heard jd hayworth calling for an investigation!!! this is exactly the kind of stuff i want to hear from republicans. is bush going to have a press conference regarding this?????
He's takes document's out in his coat, pants, socks and who knows where else on his body, he destroys some of those files, gets caught red-handed and so claims he did all this inadvertently and Katey has the nerve to pipe up with the "it's political" question.
Nope, no bias from The Perkinator. Wucking Fench.
"And What happened to the guy the feds sprung from prison in Brazil .....had the goods on a LA fundraiser for hillary and the missing $2M.....?"
did they find him in fort marcy park?
This throws some of the conclusions of the 9/11 committee report into question. Perhaps the calls for yet another layer of bureaucracy to "oversee" the CIA (besides the Intelligence Committee, which didn't do squat) were a tad premature.
YES, YES, YES, YES. Dig deep enough and uncover as much as we can. What a slime pot.
Thank God for Alamo-Girl...I had forgotten about all that stuff
BUT:
"Al Felzenberg... said Tuesday the Berger investigation will not impact the panel's work in any way."
WTF?? Clinton's handling of AL QAEDA doesn't have any bearing on 9/11??
Nevada beachfront property alert...
Lol, it is still a crime and needs to be punished.
Oh, no, not boring ME! Please go on Fishtalk! What about Lindsey??????????
I love the speculation .....
The documents were in the 9-11 Commission Reading Room, right? Therefore, the fact that the originals were safe in the National Archives made no difference. Berger pulled the copies from the 9-11 RR so NO ONE ELSE WOULD READ THEM. In other words, he probably mistakenly selected them for the Commission and when he realized the mistake, he had to make them unavailable to the commission.
In stuffing the docs down his pant, he was covering his arse, literally!
"I bet David Gergen feels like a fool!"
Thanks for the link! I heard Kelly Wright,Fox, report that Berger put documents..even in his socks.
Gergen and the rest of the dems are still spinning the "inadvertent" story and questioning the timing of this news. They, like Slick Willie, have no shame.
I don't think they have all the facts yet, just Berger's version.
