AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

By JOHN SOLOMON

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.

Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.

The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.

When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

David Gergen on the Today show this morning......(from Hugh Hewitt's column)....

Gergen than went way beyond a mere defense of Berger's honesty and patriotism. He decided to perpetrate a smear of Republicans and by extension the Bush administration. Claimed Gergen: "It's rather suspicious to Berger's associates that the story would leak just before the 9/11 Commission report is due out. He's been investigated for months. A man of utter integrity who served this country well. This is a distraction from the findings of 9/11 Commission."

Couric: "So this is political?"

Gergen: "It has those overtones."

Couric: "Berger has been advising the Kerry campaign on foreign policy - how will this story affect that?"

Gergen: "It depends how it bounces in press. The Washington Post played it inside the paper [surprise!]. If it becomes a front page story there will be pressure on him to distance himself or take aleave from campaign." But not to worry, this "doesn't reflect on Sen. Kerry."

Sandy has proven he will steal secret documents from government offices to cover his and sinkEmperor's butts, so we can take it that he will extend his neck ecen further for his idol. Lie for the clintoons?... Every fool who worked for the clintoons will lie and is known to lie for them. The problem is, nothing will come of the mounds of lies. Sandy Berger will now get away with what would send an average citizen to federal pen for decades, and the story will be safely tucked below the media whore radar, to assist their beloved democrat criminal enterprise.

"I believe Gergan and Lanny Davis both mentioned the Bush administration as the reason for the timing. At least I think other posters mentioned them on this and other threads. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. It's too much in their character. My other big question is why was Bruce Lindsay called? What connection to the archives does he have?"

The first article from AP did not indicate where they got their information, and if it had been from the Bush Administration they would not have left that bit of information out.

Of course Gergen and Davis will blame the Republicans/Bush Administration, like that excuses stealing classified documents. The search of Berger's house went down way back in Jan. 2004, the same month the Commission requested a 90 day extension, so who leaked it sounds more like a Hillry leak than a Bush administration leak.

"My other big question is why was Bruce Lindsay called? What connection to the archives does he have?"

This seems an attempt to alert Clintons lawyer that Berger was caught and he better put back what he took. Problem is that apparently the FBI was contacted and this took the problem solving out of the hands of "Larry the lawyer" fixer of Clintons scandals.

I can think of no reason why if the Bush Administration had kept this under wraps all this time, even though Ashcroft hinted in his testimony of more "intel" aside from the Gorelick wall, for them to leak this right now.

Now that Berger has confirmed the story and admitted he stole documents seems it frees the administration up to affirm the investigation.

How does Gergen know any of this, who has he been talking to?

Isn't he on his way to Duke University????

Maybe:

Clinton sent Berger to 'refresh' on documents for testimony

Berger decided or had arranged to do business on the side (for Kerry/Soros) while he had access and the excuse

Archive security people notified Bruce Lindsey of missing documents because they knew/assumed Berger was there for Clinton

Perhaps the FIRST notification by security wasn't made to Lindsey....by the time he was told, maybe the assets were in place to watch for CYA activity

As with all things Clinton, I get a headache thinking about the possibilities.

Well, well, well, it looks like Sandy Berger was caught trying to ("allegedly") steal or destroy classified documents (to protect Bill Clinton?). What a dumb bunny! Berger "allegedly" stuffed the classified documents into his pants while reviewing them for his testimony before the 9/11 Blame Bush Commission for Clinton's Screw-up.

This morning on the Today Show with Katie Commie, David Gurgen, the neo-communist democrat double agent who worked for Reagan and Clinton, accused the Bush DOJ of playing politics with investigation! Never mind that Berger left the archives with his pants full of classified memos! Berger claims that he "inadvertently" took the documents. Yeah, right like they fell into his jockey shorts!

Was Berger stupidly protecting his old boss? As my dear Grandma Chihuahua used to say, Never do anybody else's dirty work!" The old lady was right! But have you ever noticed that people who deal with the Clintons always end up dead or in jail once their usefulness is done? The list is long, Webb Hubbell, Ron Brown, Vince Foster, Jim McDougall and Martha Stewart (who was tossed to the US attorney to protect Clinton henchman Terry McAuliffe.

If there was ever a reason to vote this November, this is it. The lawlessness of the Clinton era will continue unless the neo-communist democrats are soundly defeated at the polls and rendered into political oblivion. Otherwise, we will never regain a sense of law and order where such things as perjury, theft, murder, and treason are acceptable tools for political gangsters like the democrat party and their godfather, Bill Clinton.

It'll take decades to clean up the mess that the Xlinton administration left behind.

What should we have expected from the most honest administration in the history of the U.S.?

As with all things Clinton, I get a headache thinking about the possibilities.

This is true...

To confuse it further, another poster (somewhere on this thread - apologies to you!) suggested that these "copies" were actually different drafts of the same document, which would therefore have differed among one another in ways that might have been significant.

Joe Biden would be all over TV saying we must have an investigation.

Biden is one of Kerry's advisers also .. I'm thinking he'll be playing it low for a bit

Exactly my thought when I first heard about the missing drafts. I am still wondering if they were the originals. Erasures might show up on originals that would not show up on copies.

Sloppiness? He did not at least have to sign in and out for these documents?

He just accidentally stuck classified docs in his pockets and inadvertently stuffed a few others in his leather portfolio. If he had to sign for them how could he say it was an accident.

What a farce this 9/11 Commission is.
