Washington - Warnings that terrorists are plotting "something big" against the United States are based on "very, very solid" information, the CIA's acting director said on Wednesday, likening the threat reports to those that preceded the September 11, 2001 attacks.
John McLaughlin, the acting CIA director, noted in an interview with National Public Radio that the US had ample warning of an attack before the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington but no specifics on the timing and targets.
"But we did have conviction that something big was coming at us. We have that same conviction now," he said.
"And the reason I say that it is serious is that I think the information I've seen is very, very solid. We have very little doubt about the information we have in terms of its sourcing and its authenticity," he said.
McLaughlin would not comment on the specificity of the intelligence this time, but said the agency has developed much more intelligence on al-Qaeda and its intentions since September 11.
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge warned last week that "credible reports" indicate al-Qaeda plans to carry out a large scale attack in the US to disrupt the elections.
Ridge said precise knowledge of the time, place and method of attack was lacking, but security is being stepped up at the sites of the Democratic and Republican nominating conventions this summer.
The Democratic Party's national convention is to be held in Boston July 26-29, while President George Bush's Republican Party is to hold its convention in New York August 30-September 2, ahead of the November 2 US presidential election.
Asked whether Americans should cancel vacation plans or stay away from Boston and New York during the conventions, McLaughlin said people should go about their business.
"But citizens themselves need to keep their eyes open and be alert," he said
Hee hee. I was just clicking out of the thread when I saw this. As a former, 10 year resident, of Philly, I have to agree. Coming from DC, with its beautiful Metro, I was shocked when I first rode on SEPTA trains.
However, I have to admit, at least I could get where I wanted to go, unlike the system out here in Seattle.
So what is being done?
Close the borders, deport all non-citizens from known terrorist countries.
Or just talk about threats.................
Sounds like Buffy the vampire slayer. "What's the big-bad?"
I like, "Riyadh delenda est!" myself.
Kinda like the way it just rolls off the tongue, you know?
Have printed your post:
1. To Learn
2. To have available when (not IF) the next attack happens.
Chaos will be our enemy after the next attack. I expect it to be on a larger scale than 9/11. Your post will help me avoid the chaos in my own world. Hopefully I will be able to pass it on when the time comes.....
Remember the commercial "You tell two friends, they will tell two friends and so on and so on and so on..."
I would like to take this opprortunity to thank you in advance. If the next attack is worse than 9/11, I should not count on the internet to seek you out at that time to say thanks.
So taking Italy out of WWII didn't help because we didn't have Germany yet? Or getting Germany didn't solve the problem since we hadn't beaten Japan at that point? Your logic is lacking, but then that's not new.
We weren't told, before invading Iraq, that it was some sideshow akin to Italy in WWII - rather, it was supposed to be the storehouse of WMDs and co-conspiritor with Al Quade. This all turns out to be a bunch of bunk. Meanwhile, we let the Al Queda bigwigs roam Pakistan and Afghanistan, and diverted the forced needed to shut them down, to an unneeded invasion of Iraq. Now you want an unneeded invasion of Iran -- but you're content to let Al Quade keep at it in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where there's no end to the war. Sorry, I believe in taking the war to the real enemy, not getting distracted by other agendas.
Gad, I hope that gets to be the name of the game. It is long overdue.
VERY funny picture you posted. Wish I knew where you get all these.
The powers that be are damned if they do tell us SOMETHING is going to happen, and damned if they DON'T tell us SOMETHING is going to happen. We will never have enough information. Our intelligence will NEVER be perfect. There will be people killed, hurt, etc., and there will always be someone to remind us how we DIDN'T get the information in time or whatever. (Tom Daschle?) We will NOT get a heads-up from the terrorists for the next attack. We can only do the best we can do. Beyond that - it is in the hands of God.
IMO, the surest way to insure that Bush is re-elected would be to attack America before the elections. He would win in a walk IMO.
so how about some REAL data and information this time? spill the beans. coming out with terror alerts like this only fuses the liberals and dems saying it's bull and that the Bush administration is playing only on fear of voters. give us some details and some evidence to shove back down their throats!
Maybe Tom Ridge should ask Al jazeera, i'm sure they'll know!
hahahaha!
Bulls-eye.
My hubby says what with our thousands of miles of coast, that an entire batallion of al quaeda could be dropped off on the deserted Louisiana coast and invade us and we might never know it seeing as how those al quaeda could be mistaken for suntanned cajun fishermen.
And be ready to do . . . something.
Even the crazy Crocodile Hunter gets bitten sometimes! I saw it myself. It's true!

lol
on that airplane terror in the skies deal. What the passengers could have done was make loud remarks to each other i.e. "watch this guy going to the bathroom again, what is he doing" and "another arab to the bathroom, I think they are up to no good",,sort of shout it out till the entire plane is watching and commenting. It would unnerve, jangle and make the guyys stop. I think this was a run thru with three teams of people. Probing the system.
Got a source? Thanks.
Please explain. The official title is "Democratic Party". You may have a complaint against them but the writer is correct to use "Democratic".
