Apparently 10 people overcome by fumes on flight, 4 in critical condition. This was reported at the half hour flash (11:30PM EDT).

Sorry - we were talking about another article, which discussed what happened last week -- a possible terrorist practice run.

And of course the question is whether this incident could be terror related.

Curiously this article didn't have the almost obligatory " they don't think it's terror related" in it.

I am looking for more info, but nothing more has been forthcoming in the past hour.

yeah fumes could be generated by the failures of equipment, I have mentioned above. A "sock" going bad could generate some fumes as well as a jet pump valve becoming stuck leading to ECS overheating could be a cause of the fumes.

"fire officials report..." is what the article said; fumes imply "unseen" (as opposed to smoke)...who knows, but I read that article that is being linked on this thread and now I wouldn't doubt anything.

I was on a plane several years ago that had pressurization problems. Passengers were doubled over in pain, holding their heads, etc., but it was nothing like the reports from this incident. Flew from Atlanta to Chicago that way and no one got ill, though many (most) were obviously experiencing a great deal of discomfort. Could pressurization problems cause the type of symptoms related here? Seeking info; not challenging you. You sound as if you are more knowledgeable than I on the subject.

Say if a "sock" in a moisture seperator got crudded up and inhibiting airflow, allowing overheated airflow, this could generate fumes as well as the others I've stated above. If a jet pump valve goes bad it could have the same results, as well as either a heat exchanger going bad or a pressurisation turbine failure could lead to the same.

I'm wondering if the planes ventilation system uses freon?

I got one like that in my front door at work. turn on the lights and the one in the hallway goes crazy flashing what appears to be green alternating with the usual white for a few minutes(ballast going bad). It can be nauseating.

I don't know---reports are saying some passengers "critical", hard to keep a lid on that.

This is not the first report of lately of passengers feeling ill from fumes while riding on Planes and I believe there was a bus too. They are all over on the TM threads, but I am too tired to look for them.
