Flying with Firearms on SouthWest Airlines
Me | July 15, 2004 | 10mm

Posted on 07/15/2004 12:04:45 PM PDT by 10mm

Flying to New Orleans, LA from Fort Lauderdale, FL. LA and FL have reciprocity so I can carry while I'm there.

Get to Ft. Lauderdale airport early in the morning. Go up to Skycap and inform him that I'm declaring firearms in my checked baggage and tip him 5 bucks. He says to follow him inside since this has to be handled at the customer service counter. We proceed past about 40 people to the front of the line, saving me from at least a 1-hour wait!

Tell the agent behind the counter that I'm declaring firearms. She has me open the luggage and the locked firearms case to demonstrate they are unloaded. I clear my Glock 22, Glock 29 and Kel-Tec P32 for her. Ammo for said firearms is also inside in a hard plastic ammo case.

She fills out a tag and places it in the case. I close and lock the case, and zip up the luggage. She checks the baggage in. That's it.

The flight back from New Orleans was exactly the same. Tipped the Skycap 5 bucks and he marches me to the front of a very long line at customer service. Ran through the same drill. Same outcome. Extremely satisfied with SouthWest Airlines.

Moral of the story: The quickest way through an airport is to bring a gun!

...and 5 bucks.

You dno't need a 27 to fill in the holes in your arsenal do you?

I happen to have one that I want to sell.

Any feed ramp work or other gunsmithing that would let it shoot JHPs?

The problem with .32 hollowpoints is that the cartridge OAL (Overall Length) is much shorter than the FMJ cartridge OAL. When .32 HPs are loaded in the magazine, there is a lot of front-to-back play which allows the rim of one cartridge to slip over the rim of the next cartridge. This causes the rims to lock, hence the term "rimlock". The firearm needs to be dis-assembled in order to free the locked rims.

Kel-Tec makes a strip of plastic called a "spacer" that fits in the magazine to take up excess space when loaded with hollowpoints. This cures the rimlock issue.

There is no cure, however, for the .32 HPs poor expansion and penetration. FMJ is the way to go for this caliber.

On the rare occasions that I've flown since 09/11, I always present my Idaho CCW for photo ID. Works like a champ.

Were you actually obligated to declare that there was a weapon in your CHECKED baggage?

My P32 is "the gun I carry when I can't carry a gun" gun. I keep it stoked with hot FMJ ammo (Fiocchi or S&B). I think that .32 caliber hollowpoints are worthless. Poor expansion/penetration and the possibility of rimlock. It's been 100% reliable. Kel-Tec seems to have worked out any bugs. If you get one with a serial # greater than 100,000, it'll have all the mods/upgrades that Kel-Tec introduced. The lifetime warranty is also a big plus.

That's funny - the only time mine has ever jammed has been using FMJs. It eats hydra-shoks really well, & is marginally accurate with corbon. Also, without the hollowpoint, you're really only carrying a fat .22.

I definitely agree with you that it's a great gun for when you just can't get away with a real gun. With a pistol that small and light, there's never any good reason to leave the house without it.

Were you actually obligated to declare that there was a weapon in your CHECKED baggage?

From SouthWest Airlines website:
http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/guns.html

Guns

Customers are responsible for knowing and following the firearms laws of the state(s) that they will be traveling to, from, and through.

Our Customers must declare the gun to the Customer Service Agent at the ticket counter (no firearms will be accepted curbside) and prove that the firearm(s) chambers are free of ammunition and the magazine clip has been removed (when applicable). Paint guns and BB guns are considered the same as all other firearms.

Firearms must be encased in a hard-sided, LOCKED container that is of sufficient strength to withstand normal handling, as follows:

A firearm in a hard-sided, locked container may be placed inside a soft-sided, unlocked suitcase.

A firearm placed inside a hard-sided, locked suitcase does not have to be encased in a container manufactured for the transportation of firearms.

Only the Customer checking the luggage should retain the key or combination to the lock. No exceptions will be made.

The Customer is entitled to check sporting firearms in addition to his or her normal free baggage allowance. We allow multiple firearms to be transported inside one hard-sided case.

Southwest Airlines assumes no liability for the misalignment of sights on firearms, including those equipped with telescopic sights.

Firearms are never allowed in carryon luggage.

Ammunition

Small arms ammunition for personal use (provided it is properly packed) is permissible in checked baggage only.

The ammunition may be placed in the same container as the firearm and must be securely packed in cardboard (fiber), wood, or metal boxes, or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.

When checking ammunition, Customers are limited to 11 pounds gross weight (ammunition plus container) per person.

Magazines or clips containing ammunition must be securely packaged (placed in another small box or in a secure cutout in the carrying case, in order to protect the primer of the ammunition).

Make sure guns are unloaded and definitely never transport a gun in your carryon baggage!

Gunpowder (black powder) and primers or percussion caps are not allowed in checked or carryon baggage.

Loose ammunition or loose loaded magazines and/or clips are not allowed.

Actually, the 32 Auto (aka 32 ACP) is not as bad a cartridge as so many folks make it out to be. It is not in the same class as my 357 Magnum revolvers to be sure.

However, it is not a cartridge that should be lightly dismissed.

For many, many years the .32 Auto with Winchester Silver Tips chambered in a SeeCamp was all the rage as "THE" backup gun in just about every gun magazine out there. As I remember there use to be a multi-year waiting list for that handgun.

I collect 32 Autos manufactured prior to WW-1 and really enjoy shooting them. If you are a Marshall and Sanow fan (I am not, as I like heavy bullets) you can go to the following website showing one-stop shot percentages

You will see they rate the 32 ACP with silvertips at about a 66%, which is what they rate a 38 Special at. The point being that the 38 Special was considered a fine police cartridge for many many decades, just as the .32 ACP was considered a fine European police cartridge for many many decades.

Now as to penetration.....If you compare a 32 ACP Website on water jug penetration test for 32 ACP

to say a 10mm Water jug 10mm penetration 19 inches vs 13 inches for 32 ACP

If you check out the other water jug penetration tests you will see that a 38 Special may look like it has better peneteration than a 10 mm, which might surprise you. The point of this is that a good modern HP in a 32 ACP may be superior to a FMJ.

Again, I much prefer my 357 Mag revolver (especially with 180 and 200 grain bullets in front of +P+ handloads) over a 32 Auto, but a 32 Auto is still a respectable firearm that some would say is in a similar class with the 38 Special.

My father used to fly out to the Dakotas (1950's and 60's) every so often to hunt pheasant. He would take his Winchester Model 50 12ga with him. One of the more amusing things I inherited a few years ago was the case for the shotgun with an Eastern Airlines "Carry on Luggage" tag still attached!

Different America then.

My "gun I carry when I can't carry a gun" gun is a Beretta .32 Tomcat.

It was designed for hollow points and eats Hydra-Shok's like candy.

They went through his wallet and wanted an explanation of his gun permit...

They went through his wallet? Did he have some sort of metal in there?

Try magSafe or Glaser Silver or if you really want firepower and want to spend fifty bucks for twenty rounds, try RBCD. Their motto is "When it's one shot between you and the END."

Buddy in SpecOps only carries RBCD in his 45.

I think that .32 caliber hollowpoints are worthless.

I think the Seecamp Co. would disagree with you on that one.
