NEWS FLASH: Ditka storms out of meeting

Wednesday, July 14, 2004

By The Leader-Chicago Bureau CHICAGO -- This morning in downtown Chicago, Mike Ditka left a secret meeting with IL GOP decision makers, angered about the media being tipped off.

Ditka was to meet with members of the IL GOP State Central Committee and to speak via conference call with national level Republicans.

As word of the meeting leaked out to the press, Ditka reportedly was angered when met by reporters, exited the meeting promptly and hopped into his black Escalade, and left, obviously upset.

Matt Drudge reported this morning that an announcement would be made at 9:30 am.

No word as to the ensuing discussion among state central committee members left at the meeting, which is still going on.

Ditka's willingness to take on the candidacy may be in doubt now.

Developing story . . .

I think United States Senator is not for the guy who pulled the trigger on the trade deal and draft that got them Ricky Williams... god only knows what kind of bonehead moves he'd make in the Senate.

LOL... maybe he'd work out a trade. Like McCaine for.... well for most anybody.

Well, if you can't tolerate being screwed with by the press, then "United States Senator" is probably not the job for you.

He's PO that someone he trusted can't keep their mouth shut.

In my 40 years in politics I've learned there are very few people you can trust with a secret. It seems that people have a need to be more important than they are and one way to do that is to let everyone know that you're in on a big secret. To do that you have to tell someone.

Of all the political types I know, there are 3 or 4 I would trust to keep their mouth shut.

I don't care if he has a temper. He's a Republican who can WIN in Illinois. That's not something that happens too often these days.

Yeah, but then what have you got when he wins? Someone who will vote with the repubs? Or some McCaine wanna be who votes who knows how??

Where does he stand on abortion, taxes, gun control, gay marriage, Iraq, patriot act and all of the other issues?

…secret meeting … leaked out to the press.

LOL!

Silly, Mike, I bet he thought the secret meeting was, uh, secret.

Welcome to politics, Mikey. This is the REAL big leagues.

I think it may mean that we have a number of people who are every bit as starstruck by celebrity as the leftists are. Just over different celebrities.

I just want to know if Ditka is a conservative or not? I'd like to know what his values are. Moral, fiscal, and ethical values. Or do we just elect another RINO just so we can then complain when they won't support the president?

"I doubt the Illinois RINO establishment really wants Ditka. They don't own or control him... that's the reason why they wouldn't support Fitzgerald for another term. "

Same problem in regards to the New Jersey GOP. Country Club types that would rather lose every election, and remain in control, than win and have to suffer a uncontrolled office holder.

Reminds me of the Republicans in the House for the forty years prior to 1994.

In politics, if two people know something, it is NOT a secret.

That is the simple fact.

I am with you! I think he put some people in their place and who do we have that said he stormed out -- the MEDIA!

As for Drudge -- he disgusts me to know end with his website. Haven't been there in ages and won't go there.

As to the person that leaked to Drudge -- he better go into hiding!

You are right on. I think the standards should be set quickly and without wavering when it comes to being able to trust one's staffers. That would be a good precedent to estabilsh straightaway.

just want to know if Ditka is a conservative or not?

There are two, three, ten threads on FR right now, and most of them explain over and over again that Ditka is pro-life, calls himself an ultra-conservative. So far he's come out as conservative on everthing but guns.

Explosive anger about treachery like a leak will help, not hurt him.

Shows me he is not going to be run by IL GOP which is a great thing and that he expects people to keep their mouths shut -- another good thing. We need a Republican with a temper in the Senate for a change that does get mad instead of wimpy Senators like Pat Roberts of Kansas!

I am also mistrustful of the reporting. I don't know if the Illinois Leader leans left (although I suspicion it does) but this is a judgement call. How do we know for sure that he was angered? How do we know he "stormed" out. And if he was angry, how do we know that the leak to the press was why?

I see know quotes from Coach Ditka...just some subujective reporting. I plan to wait and see, and remain hopeful. Like you, I think a Republican win in Illinois is to be desired, even if he only holds the seat for a few years.

I think people who are saying he isn't fit to run based on this story are allowing the press to manipulate their opinions.

There is a huge power struggle for the control of the GOP in Illinois.

Anyone who gets in the way or is a threat like Jack Ryan or Mike Ditka is thrown overboard to the press.

Judy Barr Topinka the leader wants to be the Gov and doesn't need anyone sharing the spotlight.
