(CNN) -- A close associate of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was flown from Iran to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday after surrendering to security officials at the Saudi Embassy in Tehran, a Saudi Interior Ministry official said.

Khaled al-Harbi was believed to have been living near the Afghan-Iranian border.

Video aired by the Arabic television network Al-Arabiya Tuesday showed al-Harbi being carried from a plane and placed in a wheelchair.

Al-Harbi is believed to have fought with bin Laden against Russian forces in Afghanistan about 20 years ago. Saudi officials believe al-Harbi returned to Afghanistan in the mid-1990s, joining up with al Qaeda.

In late 2001, he was identified on a videotape conversing with bin Laden about the September 11 terrorist attacks.

News of the surrender comes after a Saudi amnesty offer in late June for al Qaeda fighters to surrender within a month.

CNN's Caroline Faraj in Dubai contributed to this report.

No, only the Saudi Gov. structure
won't charge you. Under Sharia Law
you can be charged by families of
your victims. Even given death.
Those were the amnesty terms.

This is excellent news for the entire country, except Bush-haters. That alone ought to tell people something.

Rumor has it that KSM is at Bagram, along with Abu Zubaida.

Not sure that the surrender of the AQ fellow in Iran is really a surrender. As seen in Pakistan, the "surrendering" terrorists may be absolved of any and all possibly indictable activities to date, and free to return to jihad at will with a now clean slate.

Given the medical condition of this man, he may well be testing the waters for other terrorists. Time will tell.

"Interior Minister Prince Naif has said the amnesty is a sign of strength, not weakness and a chance for the terrorists to return to the right path and be tried according to Shariah."

Prince Nayaf, Interior Minister of Saudi Arabia, is a strict Wahabbist, oversees the Committee for the Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue, and is generally thought of as the leader of that part of Saudi Arabia opposed to stronger ties and cooperation with the west.

"Al-Oufi worked as a security guard for the Ministry of Interior but was fired. He came under the influence of radical Islamist ideology in 1993 before leaving to fight in Afghanistan in 1994. He was known for being an influential person, and for being able to persuade others, especially his own tribesmen, to join the fight in Afghanistan. In 1996 he opened a car showroom in Madinah whose proceeds enabled him to travel to the United Arab Emirates, Germany, and other countries, using his business as a cover-up for terrorist activities. In Afghanistan he was shot in the head.

Unconfirmed reports say that he had met with Osama Bin Laden and Taleban leader Mulla Omar shortly before the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington. He escaped from Afghanistan and returned to Saudi Arabia after the United States started bombing Afghanistan and toppled the regime there. Reports say that he could have been among the terror suspects who fled Riyadh’s Al-Jazirah district after security forces raided a hideout and arms store there. "

I've seen reports indicating that AQ funding has been significantly augmented by leasing expensive autombiles in Europe, removing VIN numbers, and re-selling them in Muslim countries. Not hard to see a possible connection with this man, given his demonstrated connections in the used car business, and if true, would go a long way towards explaining his favor in the AQ heirarchy.

I'm sure you remember that he is also wanted in Egypt.

Where I'm sure he'll get a "fair trial".

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
A warm wonderful sharing caring person, even if he is...misunderstood. I blame society.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has been one of the FBI's most wanted suspects since the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States.
He is believed to have masterminded the suicide-hijackings in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, and is regarded as one of the most senior operatives in Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.

[The Saudi who was seen visiting Osama bin Laden in the videotape released last week......surrendered in IRAN.]

Oh, REALLY?

I have said before that IMO Slamma Bin Lamma was in IRAN. Time for a stern phone call from GW to the "soon to be out of jobs" Mullahs. Lest they want to graduate to "soon to become grease for our tank treads" Mullahs.
