My household has recieved several different calls from an organization identifying itself as MoveOn.org, asking for a person in particular, then asking if we were already registered to vote. All three times, we said yes, and that was it. Next call I'll have the person say they are not registered, just to hear what they say. Two calls were selfidentified as moveon.org, the other one I had to ask first.
I am just wondering if anyone else got calls from them, I have never before recieved such a call. I am wondering if there might be some pattern or motive. The people in my household all have minority sounding last names. Wonder if they are also calling "anglo's".
They are calling to verify that the person is still breathing. If not they will vote for them.........
No calls from Moveon.org but I got three recorded phone calls from the Sierra Club. It was a Bush bash recording.
I called the Sierra Club and read them the riot act to get me off their list. I haven't heard from them since I called to get my name off their list.
I can only hope to get a call from them in the near future. I pity the guy who has the misfortune to call my house.

Great Moments in Democracy
"Funkybutt," a New Orleans-based contributor to the left-wing hate site DemocraticUnderground.org, has an inspiring tale of democratic participation at a MoveOn.org voter registration party (quoting verbatim):
The croud was great. One woman had her John Kerry shirt on and the whole group seemed to be Kerry supporters. I know that moveon is not affiliated with any party so I found that to be a relief after at the F-911 party I was approached by a writer who had written and article in "Workers Democracy" about how the working class CAN'T count on the Democrats. We discussed teaming up with other groups (LouisianaForKerry, KerryRoots.com, ect) in future efforts that may be more effective locally.
I was dissappointed with this party because:
a. i thought i would be calling a list of local people. (I think we could have done a lot better if our list was of unregisterred New Orleanians) Instead, we were phoning people in Florida which I agree is very important.
b. Almost none of us had ANY success signing up a voter. The list seemed pretty bad. Most of the numbers were wrong numbers and sometime it was someone who claimed to already be registerred to vote (which I suspected was a lie in SOME cases)
c. several people I spoke with said they didn't "WANT" to vote. I couldn't convince them how important it was.
*One Bite* I called about 50 people and I only had one bite. The guy had a VERY strong french accent. He was mildy rude but when he heard I was working to defeat Bush he became interested. I began signing him up but while getting his address, because of the language barrier, I had to ask him to repeat himself many times. He got irritated with my inability to understand him and hung up on me!
Just remember. The more time you keep MoveOn.org on the phone, the less time that caller can talk to anyone else. Same procedure for any special interest group you don't like who might call. Besides, it's fun to get them flustered as they think they can convince you on their Bush bashing.

I never get the fun calls. I'll trade you Move.on for my aluminum siding calls...

These callers are working from lists of potentially unregistered voters. Who know where they got the lists.
I always ask open ended questions of the caller. ex: Do you still pick your nose? What are you wearing on your head? Did you see "Raising Arizona"? Who will win the World Series? How much do they pay you? Have you ever had a real job? etc.. If that doesn't work hold the phone by the toilet and flush.
I guess for whatever reason, I showed up as unregistered. Probably because I recently moved. Makes sense I guess.
Always ask them to mail you something. If they ask for an address tell them they called you. Ask for the caller's full name and hometown. Never answer a question with yes or no. Always lead of with "well that depends then list 2 -5 conditions. The average caller is on a script and the more you try to make them think the worse things get.
I have been making donations to Bush Cheney on line and really got one of their telephone solicitors and their supervisor torn up. I told them that if they called again and tried again to get me to give via their mail out crap I'd kick some A. I then emailed everyone on the campaign asking if the wanted my money and support to continue or did they want me to help justify the telemarketing service they were paying for. I did get a response from a Gillespie underling promising I would not be called again and thanks for your continued support, blah blah blah.
If it had been a Dem solicitor all heck would have broke loose.
Cemeteries, felon lists, etc.
When I got a call from Moveon.org, my immediate thought was to keep them on the phone as long as possible.
I told the dizzy young lady that voting was a waste of time, that all politicians are corrupt and that she couldn't know John Kerry is a good guy because she never met him.
It was phone. :-)
