President Bush to address crowd at Superior Dome rally in Marquette

The Associated Press
7/11/2004, 12:53 p.m. ET

MARQUTTE, Mich. (AP) — President Bush plans to address a crowd during a rally at Northern Michigan University's Superior Dome as part of his Tuesday campaign swing through the Upper Peninsula.

A smaller event featuring remarks by Bush had been planned for Lakeview Arena, but organizers decided to hold the rally at the Superior Dome to accommodate a larger crowd, Bush campaign spokeswoman Merrill Smith said Sunday.

Bush is campaigning by bus this week in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, all states that Democrat Al Gore won four years ago and where the president is locked in close races against Democrat John Kerry.

It will be Bush's second bus tour of Michigan and Wisconsin in the past two months.

Bush took his first bus trip in May, a two-day jaunt through Michigan and Ohio. He rolled across the two battleground states to rally support for the war in Iraq and energize grass-roots support in the swing states.

Bush lost Michigan in 2000 by 5.2 percentage points, fell short in Wisconsin in 2000 by just 5,708 votes and came up 2.4 percentage points behind Gore in Minnesota.

Re your extensive knowledge of the UP.

Fortunate we both are. (Others please excuse this off topic stuff, I hope). I took an English stock broker and his wife- she knew my wife, they came from Colchester twice already. We had a couple of overnights at Grand Marais. He has a large picture of the Marais in his living room in far away England.

I hope Freepers might bear with us for somewhat wandering a little. Gloomy as I get at the down side of the news and SOME, (not all Canadian media) and it's utter down putting of GWB and all, I go over to our neighbour Sault St Marie, Michigan. I wander around and relish it all-- corny I know, but normal, normal, usually normal. And they have turned the Last Picture Show into a theatre.

How did I miss this yesterday? Thanks for posting it.

Houghton County(Houghton) - Bush 55.54, Gore 40.01 ................this would be my county. :-)

The Mining Journal of Marquette has an article yesterday quoting some of the protestors who plan to show up. One of them - "I don't know why he would come here," Killough said. "This is a strong Democrat, union stronghold. This is an area that has suffered economically under his term. I don't know what they hope to accomplish." This person must not know how well GWB did in the U.P. last time, & is thinking only of Marquette.

The 5000 tickets issued initially were snapped up in 2 hours time on Friday so 6000 more got distributed yesterday. Can't wait for tomorrow! Wonder how early one has to be to get a good seat.

There were 5000 tickets let out for the original event att the Lakeshore arena. Since they realized that the turnout was gonna be so big they took it to the dome (one of the largest wood dome stadiums in the world) and there is another 6 thousand being let out. I'd say with the reserved seats already spoken for there will be around 12 thousand at the rally.

Here's a picture and some info about the Superior Dome.

Superior Dome

Opened September 14, 1991

World largest wood dome

5.1 acres under one roof

Height equal to a 14-story building

Constructed of 781 Douglas fir beams and 108.5 miles of fir decking

Permanent seating capacity: 8,000

Building Capacity: 16,000 Locker rooms and Class rooms completed in 1995

I forgot to tell you, I am a Calumet native, so I know that it was nearly the capitol back in the day. Hard to imagine back to those days when the area was busting at the seams! There is a memorial to George Gipp that could use some restoration.

Gonna be at least 12000 in the dome-(or maybe capacity which is a lot more)...thats about the entire population of Marquette! They spread the tickets out so people from all over the UP could get in though..and rightly so. I bet the man will take a quik trip back after he sees this crowd, or at least send Dick on in to shore up the support. I'd love to see the VP as well. I'd love to see 18000 in that place, she'd be busting at the seams!

If we could shedd these G-d D-m eco fruits, we'd be going as good as we did in the early 1900s or late 1800s.

So, iirc, the last prez to visit the UP was Taft? Some people may not know how remote the area is. Two hundred miles due north of Green Bay through forests, and an occasional small town.

I am not sure if you can look at it as strictly a political calculation. Maybe they just figured you all are as American as anyone else and you deserved some attention for once.

Well, I've been all the way to the tip of the peninsula past Houghton and it is beautiful and QUIET. I'm sure it's even quieter in the winter when you have about six feet of snow.

What kind could you go for? A Finnish one or the old fashion Cornish kind? Of course then there's the old fashion road kill kind which never needs cooking.

Are there two kinds??? I'm not sure what kind I've had--it was like pie dough with finely chopped beef and vegetables, folded over and baked. We got them fresh in Iron Mountain. And we've had some frozen ones, too, and I've actually tried making them myself...

So what's the difference, between a Finnish and a Cornish, eh?

What I have heard on our local radio station in Houghton is that FDR was the last sitting president to visit somewhere in the U.P. Taft was the last to visit Marquette.

My late mother made the best pasties. She often used lard (gasp!) in the crust and a little rutabaga along with the beef, potatoes, onions, and carrots. Catsup on top a must. We're Finns, so maybe that's the Finnish version.

Yes, we watched a local dousing his with catsup and the beverage of choice was skim milk--I'm not a catsup fan, but skim milk was great with it.

Even FDR is a LONG time ago...

If anyone has a great pasty recipe, post it, please!
