Backup electrical systems failed to kick in
A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained six days later.
Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

House Votes to Block Aid for Saudi Arabia
Yahoo/Reuters ^ | 7/15/2004 | Anna Willard

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lawmakers cheered as the House of Representatives voted on Thursday to strip financial assistance for Saudi Arabia from a foreign aid bill because of criticism that the country has not been sufficiently cooperative in the U.S. war on terror.
The vote was a stinging defeat for the Bush Administration which had strongly opposed the measure saying it would "severely undermine" counterterrorism cooperation with Saudi Arabia and U.S. efforts for peace in the Middle East.
The House voted 217-191 to remove $25,000 in the $19.4 billion 2005 foreign aid bill earmarked for Saudi Arabia.
The funds were designated for military training but approval would have triggered millions of dollars in discounts on hardware and other military training, lawmakers said.

UN receives letter threatening EU: Dutch minister
15 July 2004
A letter threatening EU institutions in Brussels and The Hague was received at United Nations headquarters in New York a few days ago, Dutch Interior Minister Johan Remkes said Thursday.
The Dutch news agency ANP said the letter was signed by the al-Qaeda terror group, which claimed responsibility for the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.
The letter is currently being examined by the Dutch intelligence service, AIVD, Remkes told the commercial RTL4 television station.
In New York, a UN spokeswoman declined to comment, saying the world body does not publicly discuss security issues.
The Netherlands has held the rotating presidency of the European Union since July 1. The Hague, the country's seat of government, is home to the European police agency Europol and to the European crime fighting organisation Eurojust.
Separately, Remkes told the national ANP news agency that officials have tightened security around government buildings, after getting information last Friday about possible attacks from inside the country and abroad.

ZARQAWI CHEM PLANS REVEALED
New York Post ^ | 7/16/04 | AP

July 16, 2004 -- British intelligence received reports ahead of the Iraq war saying Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi seeded Baghdad with "sleeper cells" to attack U.S.-led forces, and that he may have received chemical and biological weapons from northern Iraq. The information, released as part of a review of British intelligence, comes as the Iraqi government said yesterday it sees signs of increasing coordination in the insurgency between al Qaeda-linked terrorist groups and the remains of Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist regime.

In an interview with Associated Press Television News, interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said terrorists aiming to undermine Iraq's new government are determined not only to kill civilians and soldiers but to destroy the nation's infrastructure.
