HOMELAND INSECURITY
Backup electrical systems failed to kick in
A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained six days later.
Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

Tom Ridge standing at Boston Harbor talking about increased security for the democratic convention.
Nothing we haven't heard, just that the look on his face can't be described.
Learning From Terror Alerts
Though many are starting to discount the warnings, they can still do some good
By ELAINE SHANNON/WASHINGTON
Many Americans are starting to shrug off terror alerts from Washington. When Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge called a press conference last Thursday to issue yet another ominous but vague warning terrorist chatter about possible attacks on the political conventions, some Democrats said that Ridge was merely trying to elbow Democratic Presidential contender John Kerry and his new running mate, Senator John Edwards, off the airwaves.
But counter-terrorism pros insist that Ridge has a legitimate purpose for bidding for the nations attention. For one thing, FBI officials say, a previous round of warnings, issued May 26, generated a lot of wild goose chases, but also some valuable intelligence, especially from overseas. For another, officials tell TIME, the FBI has raised a specific MO in a classified intelligence bulletin sent to 18,000 local law enforcement agencies last week. The advisory, headlined Potential Terrorist Threat to U.S. Energy Infrastructure, says that recent terrorist attacks and incidents occurring overseas highlight terrorists interests in targeting energy-related infrastructures. The bulletin cites three coordinated suicide boat attacks at the Arabian Gulf oil terminal in Iraq on April 24, a May 1 attack on ADB Lummus Global petroleum facility in Saudi Arabia and a May 29 attack, also in Saudi Arabia, on Arab Petroleum Investments Corp. While there is no specific intelligence of an impending attack in the U.S., the bulletin says officials are tracking several suspicious incidents in the country.
Meanwhile officials hope that Ridges call for vigilance will generate more tips of the sort that came in last May, after Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI director Robert Mueller displayed pictures of seven al-Qaeda operatives who are subjects of a worldwide FBI-CIA manhunt. Officials say television viewers abroad phoned in leads on a few of the men that are deemed credible and have resulted in valuable intelligence. Thats crucial because, says one FBI official, We think al-Qaeda is in the operational phase of an attack and may have already introduced people into the U.S.
Did you see it?
Maybe he came in to say...."ok now watch this."
Any place to find a live feed on the web? Quite often Cspan offers video of these but could not find it this time.
Hoping for Superman!
AMEN!
I know they are ideology driven,,, but bin Ladin's friend did just give himself up in Saudi Arabia, and I believe there was some other Muslim that tried to turn himself in to the FBI a long time back pre- 9-11 (but no-one believed his story)>
I don't think you understand my point. If it all comes down to Jihad's,Russia,China,N Korea, and maybe even France and Germany...attacking us all at the same time then there may not be any marshal law...I know this is worst case...But the Jihad's running around in our country could be the trigger for such an event...And they are the only ones we could do something about if we really wanted to. But it would take a dramatic change in policy...One I don't think will come before it is too late. How long can we go on tring to catch them one by one while they just keep comming. Others may call my thinking radical...I just call it common sense. A reality that we all must face sooner or later.
Yes, Quix is right. Let us all ignore such provocateurs. They have been in and out since day 1; and they have been here on FR overall since day 1 as well. Free Speech is cool; and so is the act of ignoring sometimes. We do not need any rancor here; we are too busy. That person voiced their opinion because they felt a deep-down need to do so; most folks who feel the same would simply bow out of the thread silently and move on. But we know that FR has such personality types galore. So let's forget it. We have better things to do here!
2 out of 20,000?
2 out of 2 million?
Not an impressive percentage.
Threat?!?! Why ruin the surprise???
(More seriously, the uncertainty of what our response would be should give an attacker pause...)
I found an interesting article about who the terrorist are. Not sure if you want to read it, but if anyone does here is the link and a snippet:
Meet the al-Qaeda archetype

>Terrorism expert Marc Sageman made waves at an international conference in Washington last week, when he presented his findings on 382 suspected terrorists who have direct or indirect links to Osama bin Laden's network. Sageman found that the terrorist stereotype - of poor, young, single men from the dusty backstreets of the Muslim world brainwashed into committing fanatical acts - doesn't stick when it comes to al-Qaeda. Rather, most of them are well-educated, well-off, cosmopolitan and professional, with good jobs, wives and no history of mental illness. 'Some people at the conference were
a little taken aback', Sageman says. 'I could have been describing them rather than bin Laden's men.'<
