HOMELAND INSECURITY

Backup electrical systems failed to kick in

A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained – six days later.

Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

I'm going to reply privately to this, so as not to reveal anything to jihadist lurkers.

As far as responding to a problem, think about this:

Several small nukes in Manhatten would create hundreds of thousands of burn casualties.

Our burn beds are numbered in the thousands for the entire country. We couldn't respond properly to the wounded from just one event. The system fails pretty badly right there.

Our burn beds are numbered in the thousands for the entire country.

And a large number of them are in NYC and would be destroyed in the attack.

Excellent Jung quote!! I will be using it regularly. Of all the vulnerabilities that we have, the 'post-Christian spirit' is the most telling.

From the Yahoo article:

"atropine to fight nerve agents, for instance, or amyl nitrite for cyanide. Some are in autoinjectors for use at the site of an attack, others packaged for emergency-room use."

What did I tell ya? I think it is far more likely that if a chemical agent is employed in a terror attack it will be a single agent of the nerve toxin type rather than some form of hodge-podge recipe thrown together. Because of chemical interactions, it'd be difficult to ascertain the rate of action, persistency and means of deployment for max dispersal.

First off, nerve agents are uniformly the most deadly substance known to man. They are persistant and have a fairly even rate of action (time from moment of contamination to the moment of death). Most significantly, there is a preset means of dispersal via munitions, aerosal spray or whatever. They've been around for a very looooong time. For the properly trained individual, there's not much mystery to the use of such an agent in an attack.

I have been searching on and off for the jakel image of the bull and I can't find it linked anywhere anymore. It is there somewhere, most likely. I have a copy on my hard drive, but the web site where I can publish it couldn't handle the bandwidth if I posted it here.

Wildfire near Everglades shuts down major highway outside Miami

Associated Press

MIAMI - A wildfire on the edge of the Everglades burned hundreds of acres of dry grass and trees Sunday, with smoky skies forcing the closure of about 10 miles of a major highway in western Miami-Dade County.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/state/9132644.htm?1c

This was posted on the AP Sun. July 11th. My local news yesterday said the blaze was several thousand acres and only 20% contained. Cause unknown.

I have done a little investigating into the Red Cross list in post 688. 4 of the cities on that list are in MA so it caught my attention. The jobs listed are sponsored by the American Red Cross and funded by AmeriCorps grants. Grant dollars were released for the 2004/2005 program year on 5/7/2004 and the program year runs 07/04-06/05. Some cities/towns have part-time postions and some are full-time. Main focus of these jobs is to provide disaster preparedness (related to homeland security) to their community as well as emergency assistance when needed. (90% of time is spent making public presentations)

I don't live too far from Leominster or Lowell and I haven't been able to find anything of great importance located in these areas (ie: military bases, nuclear power plants, etc.) and they are not located along the shore. I really think these communities are listed because someone took the time to write a grant proposal and they received the funding. I don't think it's a omminous sign that these cities were chosen just that someone in the community saw the need for community preparedness and acted on it.

One newspaper article stated that the newly hired Red Cross employees would educate citizens across many counties on the 5 actions steps to take to prepare and respond to disasters:

1.Make a family plan
2.Build an emergency kit
3.Get trained in lifesaving skills
Volunteer to assist others in the community
5.Give blood
