Wildfire near Everglades shuts down major highway outside Miami

Associated Press

MIAMI - A wildfire on the edge of the Everglades burned hundreds of acres of dry grass and trees Sunday, with smoky skies forcing the closure of about 10 miles of a major highway in western Miami-Dade County.

This was posted on the AP Sun. July 11th. My local news yesterday said the blaze was several thousand acres and only 20% contained. Cause unknown.

I'm in Coral Gables and this morning we awoke to a choking smoky haze. It is as bad as I have ever seen it in this town and I was born and raised here! My poor wife is allergic to smoke. Every year, the Everglades goes up in flames. It's part of the natural order of things. This was caused by multiple lightning strikes. I saw a few of them. Florida has the most lightning strikes of any state in the union. In fact you're eleven times more likely to die by lightning strike here than anyplace else. No mystery.
