The same thing I think of the decent, principled men and women who were my school teachers when I was growing up.

Does a principled man scam the workers comp system?

I agree with you about the power equipment. Although, if you are on your own property and choose to let your 12 year old drive a tractor, that should be your own choice.

But, many children work in the family business. At the local ACE hardware store by my house, the owner's kid, probably 12-13 years old, runs the cash register on the weekends. The kids seems like she likes running the cash register. Should he be fined for allowing his daughter to come to work with dad?

The cash register sounds like an age appropriate duty. Other jobs around the store might not be. Sounds like her father brings some common sense to the job,

I'm wondering about the mother who gave her permission!

Yeah, what type of people are these? The husband assaults other people's kids and his wife stays home and pops out more kids.

are you one of those that thinks 'corporal punishment' is never ever called for?

The problem with you is that you can't discuss anything without trying first to smear somebody.

My point was more to register my surprise at the immediate siding with governmental control over child-training that occurred, here, at FR. I'm still surprised.

What concerns me is that this guy is using a secondary issue to drum up support, when the real issue is that he got caught cheating. He comes across saying, "the state won't let me raise my kids the way I want to, and I may lose my home and business because of it," when in fact the $26,000 he was fined for endangering his kids is peanuts compared to the $107,000 he was fined for fraud.

Do I want the government telling this guy how to raise his kids? I do not. Evolution demands that the guy be allowed to kill his own kids in any way he sees fit. ;^)

Now, do you support his defrauding the workman's comp system?

I don't know where you grew up, but nobody I know EVER got spanked with a STICK.

define "stick". We can't without more knowledge. I side with the jury until more info is known. Parents (and teachers, etc where parents allow) need to be able to exercise authority.

Good to know that you never knew anyone that got spanked but I bet if you really did a detail survey of those you know, you may find out otherwise ...

If the mother was there, why didn't SHE do it, if she thought it needed to be done?

Or aren't women allowed to do that (which would have been 'big news' to my son......LOL)

Well I have a real problem with the fact that his kids are taking away jobs from illegal immigrants.

If this trend continues we'll soon see children operating combustion engine cutting machinery on their parents' lawn, instead of parents hiring trained professional landscapers.

That being said, my daddy never once asked me to get on the roof and rewire the electricity.

I'm picturing you doing the 'roof surfing' thing trying not to get hit by the passing traffic lights. :)

I disagree that he is a patriot. The main reason for child labor laws is because children - and women - were forced to perform in jobs that were dangerous to them. Such as miners, sweat shops, construction, etc. If you are not careful, you can seriously hurt yourself operating a gas powered push mower. Child labor laws is one thing I agree that the government should involve itself in. I believe the government should be like a ref in a ball game. Let the players play but blow the whistles on major infractions. This guy was involved in a major infraction. You can teach a strong work ethic without having the kid(s) work in dangerous conditions.

I agree, unless there are other employees around or you're creating a danger for 3rd parties.

I asked: are you one of those that thinks 'corporal punishment' is never ever called for?
you replied: The problem with you is that you can't discuss anything without trying first to smear somebody.

Now why did you go and smear me with that label? You are acting surprised, you stated you don't know ANYONE that has ever been spanked with a stick, etc. If I 'presupposed' in my question, please accept my apology but dialogues are short here so state your beliefs.

If only half the allegations against the father are true, he is negligent and there is no way in hell that I can support what he did in the name of "Family Values".

Of course, the word "dumbass" comes to mind.

< Is screwing other people your idea of good "child-training?" >>

What do you think? We didn't just meet today, sink. Do you really think that was the part on which I was commenting?

But if you like, we can discuss whether it's the state's proper role to mandate insurance coverage for business owners. I say no. But I also think, when you break the law, you deal.

I learned that discipline can be a good thing when applied appropriately. In our case "appropriately" was a slat from an old wagon that had given up its side slats. All it took was one spanking with that slat for us to know that getting in trouble wasn't going to end being a good thing.

My dad got his point across with judicious use of that slat. After we got it across our backsides one time, all he had to do was threaten to use it on us to get his point across.

And for the record, I agree with most of the posts that this guy is not using good judgement in putting his kids in certain jobs that could be very hazardous. If one of those kids lifting traffic light cables got knocked off the house and was killed from hitting the pavement, what then?

Cheers!
