Rob Reiner Named Democrat of the Year
By ROSANNA MAH, The Independent Staff Writer

One of Hollywoods leading political advocates Rob Reiner is being honored as Democrat of the Year by the West Hollywood Democratic Club for his outstanding contributions to Democratic Party causes.
Rob Reiner is a lifelong Democrat, said club president Donald DeLuccio. He wants to get Democrats elected and his goal is giving back to the community.
In an effort at mobilizing local interest in the upcoming presidential campaign, the liberal organization is also honoring Antonio Villaraigosa, Kerry campaign national co-chair, with the organizations Presidents Award.
The awards event in West Hollywood will be held less than a week before the upcoming coronation of Senator John F. Kerry, who will accept the Democratic nomination at the Boston convention.
Director Reiner is not only known for making legendary films like When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men and The American President box-office successes but hailed and sometimes condemned for being one of the Democrats staunchest supporters.
You come under a lot of criticism for taking a stand on issues, says Reiner, an outspoken critic of President George Bush, but youve got to do it if you feel something is right, and you are aware of speaking out and having your voice heard.
Unless you are Michael Moore who makes a living out of it, says Reiner, politics in Hollywood can mean bad business.
But bad business or not, Reiner can always be relied upon for generous financial donations. The day after former presidential challenger Howard Dean quit the race, Reiner and his wife, Michele, in a flourish of support, gave Kerry the maximum $4,000 allowed by federal law.
Ive always been a big admirer of John Kerry, said the former California campaign co-chair for Dean.
I believe that now weve seen what George Bush has done and we have to get him out of there, John Kerry is proposing the most intelligent and far-reaching vision not only for what we need to do ... in the war against terrorism, but the ways in which we have to conduct ourselves in the world.
As one of the players in Kerrys star-studded Hollywood camp including Ben Affleck and Barbra Streisand, Reiner has served as the warm-up act for Kerry at a San Jose fundraiser.
He also finished directing one of MoveOns (liberal political advocacy group) anti-Bush, 30-second ads, which is expected to be aired on television by August. The Castle Rock Entertainment principal has also long been involved with early childhood development and environmental initiatives, some of which challenged the tobacco industry.
A key example is Proposition 10, the 1998 voter-approved initiative which levied a 50-cent cigarette tax per pack to fund preschool services.
He has great politics, said State Senator Sheila Kuehl, who says she was impressed with Reiner after working with him to stop the Ahmanson Ranch development in east Ventura county.

THE BLUEBERRY PIE BARF-O-RAMA ALERT!!!
Donating to lefties is considered giving back to the community????
I must admit, Hollywood multimillionaires giving up $4000 of their hard-earned money brings a tear to my eye. The sacrifice!
ROTFLOL...... When they name this guy Communist Pig of the Year; I will applaud.
Meathead is a moron. We do that every day of the year, whether we want to or not. It's called The Tax System.
I really find it hard to dislike him when I'm watching my well-worn tape of This Is Spinal Tap.
Last night the baseball game between the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers was televised. Mark Grace is the color commentator for the Diamondbacks. The camera showed Reiner sitting in the stands, and Grace said "There's Meathead." He called him that three times, never called him Rob Reiner.
Heh heh. Maybe Grace is a conservative.
I haven't spent one penny on a Reiner film since he came out public as such a liberal activist.
On South Park they made him into a no smoking facist who could not stop eating. They had him say:
"Sometimes lying is ok, like when you know what's good for people more than they do." - Rob Reiner
He's still just a Meatball in my book.
The only difference between Michael Moore and Rob Reiner is a bar of soap and a razor.
Dead from the neck up.
Meat. Head.
Me neither, but I watched the Ronald Reagan movie marathon on Turner Classic Movies last month!
"my goo! my precious, precious goo!!!!"
I KNEW MY REFERENCE WOULD NOT BE IN VAIN!
Really? I'd hoped thought that loudmouth was dead.
Meatloaf Moore beat out for this distinction by the Meathead. Appropriate!
Reiner prepares to defend his title against an enraged Michael Moore.
Didn't anyone out there point out the irony that the guy who imposed tough anti-tobacco laws in the state and who supposedly cares so much about other people's children directed a movie where the kids continually SMOKE? Or that it was on the set of this movie that River Phoenix and Corey Feldman were first introduced to marijuana and hard drugs, leading to addictions which killed one and destroyed the career of the other? For what it's worth, I'm actually partial to anti-smoke laws...but unlike Reiner, I'm consisent.
