DUBUQUE, Iowa -- John Kerry's pro-choice stance on abortion dogged him during his Fourth of July visit to this heavily Catholic city.
The Democratic presidential candidate on Sunday attended mass at the Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque, sat in the fourth pew, donated a crisp $20 bill to the church during collection, and received Communion.
But several churchgoers separately quizzed Kerry about his legislative support for abortion rights after Mass on Sunday when Kerry was signing autographs and posing for pictures with congregation members.
"It's hard," Kerry told parishioner Frank Ward, a father of five and an abortion opponent. "It's a difficult line to walk."
Kerry told another man in the lobby of the church that "I'm against partial birth abortion," even though he voted against banning the procedure six times in the Senate. Kerry said he would have voted for the ban if it included an exception to allow the procedure if it was necessary to protect the health of the mother.
"They did it for a political reason," Kerry said of Republicans who backed the measure, which passed last fall in the Senate 64-34 with support from several Democrats after years of debate. "They tried to drive home the politics of it."
In an interview with the Telegraph Herald newspaper published Sunday, Kerry said: "I don't like abortion. I believe life does begin at conception. But I can't take my Catholic belief, article of faith, and legislate it on a Protestant or a Jew or an atheist ... We have separation of church and state in the United States of America."
Republicans quickly seized on Kerry's remarks as more evidence that he flip-flops on issues, telling different voters what they want to hear. President Bush's campaign pointed out that Kerry received a 100 percent ranking in 2002 from NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Campaign aides say they believe the interview marked the first time Kerry, the first major presidential candidate who is Catholic since John F. Kennedy, specifically said he believed life begins at conception.
However, he's consistently said his views on abortion are the same as the Roman Catholic Church, which believes life begins at conception.
"He's always said he doesn't believe in abortion, but these are his convictions that he can't enforce on others," said Stephanie Cutter, a Kerry spokeswoman. "He's pro-choice and believes that abortion should be safe, legal and rare."
Later Sunday at a parade in Cascade, several residents donned Bush-Cheney stickers and one woman held a sign which read, "Defend pro-life, public and private."
"I was initially surprised to hear that John Kerry says he hates coming to places like Dubuque," said Iowa state Sen. Julie Hosch, R-Cascade, in a statement released by the Bush campaign. "But it's not hard to figure out why the Senate's most liberal member -- who has voted at least six times against banning partial birth abortion -- would be happier in Nantucket and Georgetown."
As Kerry's motorcade left the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, one woman held a sign reading "No more dead babies."
Senator Kerry, you say you cannot force Catholic belief on Protestants or Jews or Atheists becuase of separation of church and state. Does that mean you intend to repeal the laws against murder? After all, isn't Thou Shalt Not Murder just an old Jewish concept that has been legislated into American law? I suspect that law really upsets the Mohammedans who believe murdering infidels is a blessed act.
Senator Kerry, do you believe the concept that life begins at conception is only a Catholic belief? I always thought it was a proven biological fact. After all, a fertilized human egg always results in the creation of another human being unless the fetus is killed. Or are you saying because it was Father Gregor Mendel who pioneered the science of genetics and because he was Catholic, that any concept based upon heredity is is Catholic?
I'd be willing to bet that I could convince EVERY conservative that they too are Pro-Choice.
1. Yes, we believe the mother has a choice.
2. But her choice doesn't trump the choice of the father. He too has a choice.
3. As do ALL the direct family members.
4. As does the fetus.
Since the child-in-waiting can't make his or her choice known while in the womb . . . it's only fair to put off the final decision until this vote can be tallied as well. Don't Libbers always accuse us Conservatives of "blocking the votes of the oppressed?" What entity can be more oppressed than a living fetus trapped in the womb of a mother who wants to kill it? Hey . . . We're just trying to stand up for the oppressed.
Lastly, since we're talking about ending a human life, the vote should be unanimous before any action is taken. Don't 12 jurors have to unanimously agree on the death penalty?
I rest my case . . . this Pro-Lifer is also Pro-Choice. I'll bet most of you are as well. It just depends on what the definition of "is" is.

This CINO does not represent the Catholic point of view.
**He should start worrying about being "dogged" by it in the afterlife.**
Good line!

No, that's not the relevant teaching of the Catholic Church. The relevant teaching of the Catholic Church is that it is the OBLIGATION of the state to give equal protection of the law to ALL HUMAN BEINGS--which means it is Kerry's obligation to vote AGAINST all the things he votes for, and to vote FOR all the things he has been voting against. And it is the obligation of all Catholics to vote against Kerry.
Kerry is a deceitful, violent, corrupt, hypocritical scumbag. Catholics are not supposed to vote scumbags into public office.

What an ass this John Faux Kerry is.
Do you know anything about their local ordinary?

MEDIA SUING TO OPEN KERRY'S SEALED DIVORCE PAPERS
More Bias and spin in the many newspaper articles to protect the liberal democrat. Kerry provided NO evidence of an annulment and he was married to Heinz, his second wife worth Billions, in the back yard of a home on Martha's Vineyard which is not ordinarily allowed for Catholics and there is also NO evidence of any RC priest who married them.
I wish the reporters would question him for the truth. Dream on.

1400 Ecclesial communities derived from the Reformation and separated from the Catholic Church, "have not preserved the proper reality of the Eucharistic mystery in its fullness, especially because of the absence of the sacrament of Holy Orders."236 It is for this reason that Eucharistic intercommunion with these communities is not possible for the Catholic Church. However these ecclesial communities, "when they commemorate the Lord's death and resurrection in the Holy Supper . . . profess that it signifies life in communion with Christ and await his coming in glory."237

Sin to vote for pro-abortion politicians?

Good Lord, no wonder the Dims love Theresa so much--she admits to killing her unborn handicapped child!
effin's rationale for killing unborn babies was that due to "separation of church and state", he couldn't "impose his beliefs on Protestants or Jews". As usual, this attempt to be on all sides of every issue is completely irrational. If his argument were a viable one, he would have to apply it to other issues and people of other faiths. For instance, he would not be able to impose his views on radical islamists who believe in the "eye for an eye" adage, therefor he would have to pass legislation that allows people to chop each others hands off, or poke each other's eyes out. Also, he would have to vote to allow people to marry multiple partners, after all, who is he to tell them they can't? And let's not forget stealing, heck, if we don't listen to God's commandment "Thou shalt not steal", what reason do we have not to? Why not have a new law that says if I want it, and I saw it first, its mine. Or if I'm bigger and stronger than you, and I can take it from you, its mine.
Obviously, any civilized society's laws are based on the Big Ten given to us by God's own Hand. "Thou shalt not kill" is way near the top of the list, right after the ones about honoring, and not mocking, our Creator. If that feckless, flipflopping, disingenuous, metrosexual dandy really believed that unborn babies are babies, he would be obligated by conscience to vote to protect their unstained and innocent lives from senseless murder. And if he doesn't have a conscience, then he needs to be under the care of a psychological professional immediately, because that would mean he is a sociopath. (See description here http://home.datawest.net/esn-recovery/artcls/socio.htm - notice parallels to f'n's behaviors, at least those we have been privvy to hearing about.) Either way, his defense of his record holds no water, particularly his vote ****against**** the Laci and Connor's Law (Unborn Victims of Violence Act, I believe is the official name.) In that case, he voted to protect a felonious criminal's "right to choose", should he choose to kill a pregnant woman and her baby.
Give me a break! I think if jfk ever actually spoke the truth, his considerably large head would explode. He sickens me.
Re: "He says he can't "legislate" his own "personal beliefs?"
Yeah right lets see this applied to the party platform on other issues such as.... say....gun legislation? Hummmmm
When will someone ask one of these liberals the question, "What choice do you think those little women in the womb would make?"
What a freakin' cheapskate!
