July 6, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE

John Kerry has chosen Rep. Richard Gephardt, the veteran congressman from Missouri, to be his running mate, The Post has learned.

Gephardt, 63, a 28-year veteran of the House of Representatives, could be named by the presumptive Democratic nominee as the party's vice-presidential candidate as soon as today.

The Massachusetts senator was set to announce the winner of the veep-stakes at a rally this morning in Pittsburgh, according to several reports last night.

With the July 26 Democratic convention in Boston looming, Kerry is looking for some advantage in the polls, and is hoping his choice of running mate will be the answer.

Yeah, I've been getting that sense too when I lurk over there. It's either Weasely or Purdy Boy Edwards they're gushing over.

What a retarded pick.

Even Dukakis had the brain cells to pick a southerner in '88 to moderate his ticket.

Here is the cover of the early edition of today's New York Post, the one that actually went to press last night. As you can see, it is completely different. The Post got a scoop sometime in the last few hours and ran with it.

Lloyd Bentson, oh brother there's a name I haven't though of in 15 years.

Here in Houston I have to see his name every now in then when I ride the "Senator Lloyd Bentson Highway" (a small interchange). He ain't senator no more, folks.

His son got passed over in some recent elections.

If you get lonesome to see Lloyydd'ss face again, rent "The Atomic Cafe" where you can see some footage of him from 1948(?) urging you to contact your congressman to tell him that you support the use of the nuclear bomb in Korea.

That too.

Kerry needs to release his and his wife's financial records, his complete medical records from his time in Vietnam to now, and his complete military records.

We have a right to know.

Darn--I lose a bet with my husband that it wouldn't be Gephardt!

This is not good news for the Misssouri GOP. We have a governor's race that was looking good which is now going to be harder to win. Worse yet, another Carnahan (gay daughter of the late governor and former senator) is running for Secretary of State, which would help insure that more St. Louis dogs vote whether or not they have been probably registered for more than licenses. Her victory could put the "fix" in for future Senate elections.

The only good thing about this is that Gephardt has never run in a state-wide race, muchless won one. A lot of out-staters don't like him because he's from St. Louis (country mouse versus city mouse). His labor influence is debatable at best, as evidenced by his lackluster support in Iowa in February. And Kerry already has the labor vote anyway, so this must be an overt plea for Missouri's electoral votes. He's weird looking on tv (as in, would you really want this guy to be President in case of emergency?). He's a class-warfare special forces soldier and will seem like old-style politics when he debates Cheney.

This is a Missouri battleground strategy, which, I pray, fails.

BTW, his aide de camp, Joyce Aboussie is a machine politics maven. Short, fat, ugly and no life other than serving Dick Gephardt's political ambition, she's an armtwisting, power-grabbing "bad dog" to his "good dog". There was a most insightful article in FR posted about her several months ago and is worth re-posting.

Hoffa is convinced that he owns Kerry. He even claimed Kerry will drill ANWR!

Kerry is an anti-Southern bigot. His whole strategy is coastal/midwest.

4 more years of Bush, it's officially a lock now.

Not a doubt in my mind now that Default_VP_01 has been chosen. The Dems know it's a loss and are clearing the "it's their turn" duo.

It's only been 44 years since two current members of Congress have won on a Prez ticket, and that time the winner was a Senator from Mass., and if it happens again, he will be POTUS #....

AAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two 25+ year, career, Liberal, Congressmen with no Executive experience.

Precisely - his skills are focused on sniping from the sidelines, not actually providing leadership.

This is an extremely boring ticket - it appears Kerry is trying to lull the electorate to sleep.

Regards, Ivan

I just can't get over the fact that tradesports.com still has Edwards up big. Doesn't make sense if it is really Edwards. I suspect that people truely in the know are keeping the price of the Edwards contract high.

It's the Demakazi ticket. Destined to go down in flames before it reaches the election.

Mission impossible: This campaign will self destruct in 10 minutes...

Little Dick has been an also ran for a very long time. Put him on the ticket, give him "his shot" and then pass him over forever more (or treat him like William Jennings Bryan and run him again and again...).

Metro Edition vs. Late City Final Edition. The Late City Final edition is delivered to the few who get the Post delivered in my apartment building.

But the number 44 is 4 times 11 or 2 times 22 or 1 times 44. Numerology tells us that...

Did they ever find his dad? Is the Boston DNC convention going to be a big Hoffa memorial rally ala Wellstone?

I predict Kerry will give his concession speech in 2 weeks, it'll be over before we know it, and Fat Teddy the whale can go sip his Chivas on Miami Beach.

Gephardt's last race was the Iowa Caucus where he finished in 4th, only ahead of Kucinich. The next day, "No Eyebrows" declared he was out of the race.

I still think it's Edwards no matter how much I love the Post.

Yup. And they don't usually do a total cover redesign between editions. Something big's got to happen for that.

Either the Post scooped the world, or they're going to be living this down for decades to come.
