Poll: Over 40% of Canadian Teens Think America is "Evil"
The Toronto Free Press ^ | June 30, 2004 | Arthur Weinreb

Posted on 07/05/2004 6:14:03 PM PDT by quidnunc

Can West News Services, owners of several Canadian newspapers including the National Post as well as the Global Television Network commissioned a series of polls to determine how young people feel about the issues that were facing the country’s voters. Dubbed "Youth Vote 2004", the polls, sponsored by the Dominion Institute and Navigator Ltd. were taken with a view to getting more young people involved in the political process.

In one telephone poll of teens between the ages of 14 and 18, over 40 per cent of the respondents described the United States as being "evil". That number rose to 64 per cent for French Canadian youth.

This being Canada, the amount of anti-Americanism that was found is not surprising. What is significant is the high number of teens who used the word "evil" to describe our southern neighbour. As Misty Harris pointed out in her column in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, evil is usually associated with serial killers and "kids who tear the legs off baby spiders." These teens appear to equate George W. Bush and Americans with Osama bin Laden and Hitler, although it is unknown if the teens polled would describe the latter two as being evil. Whether someone who orders planes to be flown into heavily populated buildings would fit that description would make a good subject for a future poll.

Judy:

Thanks for the example you are giving your children.

When folks up there give you grief, you may want to ask them 2 things:

(1) Of Canada's exports, 83% go to the U.S. (2003 stats). The people up there may be "in love' with the European socialists but the European socialists aren't the ones putting a roof over Canadians' heads or food on their table. In fact, only 4% of Canada's exports go to Europe. Remember, Canada is on the same side of the "big pond" as us. The Europeans see Canada as "North American" and nothing Canada can do will change that. If the U.S. were out of the way, the Europeans would still see Canada as an outsider.

(2) Remember the Soviet Bear? The Soviets could have taken Canada at any time. Do you really think the Canadian military could have stopped them? Why do you think the Soviets never even dared make the move?

Again, thanks for being there. Canadians owe us nothing. However, they could at least be more supportive neighbors.

When I was a teenager in the fifties I lived near the Canadian border and went up there from time to time and knocked around with Canadian teenagers. Even then they called Americans "snakers" from the United Snakes of America. Why? I never knew then, and don't know now. What difference does it make anyway? When you have to carry your currency in a wheelbarrow, you've got to be discontented. Probably it's best to blame the Americans, because they don't care what Canadian teenagers think, or even whether they think.

Of course they think we are evil! Between our own media and theirs that is all they hear. When a democrat is back in the White House, we will be a good country again however!!! Just wait and see!

They learned it from Britain for more than 100 years. And since then, they've learned it from the communist propaganda pipeline from all of Europe.

"Now, just what would they think if the US had to come to Canada's defense, since Canada doesn't have much of one?"

Just as Europe does and teaches them to do (especially Britain, in the case of Canada), they would still hate us.

Please pay no attention to this as our teens know next to nothing.

They don't stand a chance.

Don't sell them short.
They could be like two of my cousins who left Edmondton (actually Sherwood Park)
in their rear-view mirror...
and are cleaning up financially in Dallas.

And it seems like I'm always meeting idealistic Canadian doctors with thriving practices...
here in Los Angeles.

(Please don't take offense...it's just what I've seen in my personal experience.)

I wouldn't be surprised, given the state of public education in this country, if 40% of AMERICAN teenagers thought the same!

As I have travelled around the world during the past few years, the only people I have found who dislike the U.S. are academics and the "children" they have brainwashed.

More than 50 percent of American teens think Canada is our 53rd state.

You may be surprised to learn that about 50% of Canadian teens think the same thing.

About the only thing they know about the USA is what they see in movies and on TV. You can see what an effect that has on the sheeple in the USA. Much more so in other countries.

I used to live there. That experience is the single biggest factor for why I can now say that I am a "Recovered" liberal.

I'm glad to see conservatives in Canada too. I know I did my fair share of badmouthing Canada (although it is directed at the liberals up there, but if I ever got any conservatives via friendly fire, I apologize, I think it was Grig who set me straight last year) here but I mainly stopped because I know there are Canadians who are just as peeved at the rabid liberals as we are here in the States. I know there are Canadians who are just as upset (if not beyond that) who feel like the Canada they knew, love, and grew up in is being ripped from them, much like many of us here in the United States. I do think Canada is further down the liberal commode than we are in the United States, although we are not exactly tailgating Canada as we slide down, I see the tailights bright and clear.

I also surf at Free Dominion, I see the battle against the rabid liberals that both Canadians and us here in the United States have to fight although it is really worldwide. Just seeing the aftermath of the election, I think most Canadian conservatives on Free Dominion are so upset, it makes the rants here at Free Republic look like pikers although that could change if "Ketchup Boy Kerry" gets elected, blech.

We all need to stick together, otherwise, we could hang separately, to paraphrase Ben Franklin.

"Some of us up here are ashamed of Canada for not standing firmly beside you. My teens go to a private Christian school, and even there they were in rather heated debates all year for standing up for America. Sadly, they were pretty much the only ones...but I was proud of them."

We NEED clear-headed patriots like you...

Come on down and make it official -- you ARE "American!"

I believe you are suffering from a legacy that Britain left you with - unfortunately, we weren't wise enough to force the French community to conform to speaking English...and nothing else. The germ of a French polity in Canada has probably been largely responsible for the state of affairs in Canada today.

My regrets.

Regards, Ivan

Of course you are right, Mad Ivan. The French socialists from Quebec manage to rule the country. It is mandatory throughout Canada for French to be taught in school. Anything marketed must be in labeled in French and English. Yet in Quebec, signs posted on private shops, etc, ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE IN ENGLISH. Quebec receives huge amounts of money from the federal government, yet many or most continue to badmouth Canada. But we keep pandering to them. Another form of appeasement, like trying to please a very spoiled child. Many of us are growing rather weary of them.

"Come on down and make it official...you ARE American."

LOL. Thanks for the invite F16, but our dollar is not worth enough! I have, however, encouraged my teens to head south the first opportunity they get. Unless, of course, they want to stay here and try to fix things, which, I must admit, they seem a little keen on doing.

Yep, when I was younger I wanted to be liked. After 30, I've found respect is better. Unfortunately, the Euros are correct in that we are still a relatively "young" country. Maybe we'll learn someday, I hope.
