Accused of raping five women in the Boulder and Lakewood areas, former Aspen real-estate agent and Snowmass snowboard instructor Bradford T. Wagner was employed in the 1990s as a gay porn star in West Hollywood, Calif., the Aspen Daily News has learned.
Wagner's career in gay adult films was confirmed Friday by the executive of the company that produced some of the movies in which Wagner starred. The executive spoke on the condition that his name and company not be used.
In one movie that was shot in 1991, cast credits list the name of Brad Wagner, but subsequent releases of "Billy's Tale, A Modern Day Fable," replaced his name with the moniker, "Tim Barnett." Using the Barnett alias, Wagner appeared in more than 20 films produced in the early 1990s.
Some locals who knew Wagner when he lived in Aspen have described him as a well-mannered and affable resident, and news of his arrest last month sent a shock through the circle of friends he established since moving here a few years ago. Even a week before he was arrested, Wagner called Aspen Chamber Resort Association President Hana Pevny in an effort to secure a pass to last month's Food & Wine Magazine Classic.
And while the reaction to Wagner's arrest stunned those who knew him, his career as a gay porn star has compounded an already sinister saga.
"I just can't believe it, but that's him," said a former acquaintance of Wagner's when viewing gay porn promotional material featuring photographs of Wagner.
The fact that Wagner was a gay-porn star who allegedly became a serial rapist is an almost unheard of scenario, said Jean McAllister, executive director of the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
"Sexual orientation and sex offending are two different things and it's important to keep those separate," she said. "Certainly many sex offenders are involved in and use pornography, [BUTTMONKEY eee eee eee eee] but I'm not saying that one is causitive of the other. And remembering that sexual assault is an act of violence, people may be involved in sexual violence against a number of people that may not be related to their sexual orientation."
Less clear is how Wagner's gay-porn past will play out in Boulder County District Court, where the 36-year-old faces eight counts of first-degree sexual assault stemming from the rapes of four south Boulder women that occurred between 1993 and 1998.
"I would just say the real issue, from my perspective, is the Boulder case and I don't see this as relevant," said Wagner's attorney Wilbur Smith of Denver. "Our position is he's innocent, regardless of what he may or may not have done in his past. If a guy's innocent, he's innocent. That's all we care about."
Last week, Wagner, who lived in the Aspen area the last few years and was a broker for Coldwell Banker Commercial Investments on Main Street through May, was charged with four counts of first-degree sexual assault in connection to the 1994 rape of a Lakewood woman. Authorities say DNA implicates Wagner in those five rapes, as well as another one in Austin, Texas, which occurred in 1995. Wagner has not been charged there.
When asked about how Wagner's past would play in the case against him, Boulder County Deputy District Attorney Ken Kupfner said, "I can't really say anything about it."
Commander Kurt Weiler of the Boulder Police Department, which arrested Wagner at his Glenwood Springs home on June 11, also declined comment.
"We're in a tough spot in that we can't talk about a continuing investigation," he said. "Whatever additional information we have will be used in court first, and after that we can comment on it."
Public records show that Wagner lived on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood in the early 1990s, as well as Los Angeles. Authorities have also reported that Wagner lived at many addresses over the years in states such as Colorado, New Jersey and Texas.
The native North Dakotan had two addresses in Aspen, one at building number 10 at Hunter Creek Apartments, another on East Hopkins Avenue, public records show.
His rap sheet, which includes arrests in five different states, extends to November 1985, when he was arrested in San Clemente, Calif., for grand theft auto and receiving stolen property, according to court papers.
Wagner remains in Boulder County Jail on $1 million bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 13.

One point I see is that has become un-PC to condemn porn "stars" - that's judgemental, see? Can't have any nasty judgementalism going on, that's evil. Being a porn prostitute, especially a homosexual one? That's a lifestyle, an orientation, a legitimate profession. And notice how this unsavory character is being supported?
Not "presumed innocent" - just "innocent".
Because the perp was a homo porn star, he's more equal than a regular rapist.

You know, really stupid stuff. And it always comes after a BUT.
So Laura edited the tapes to insert a deep male voice before the "but" saying "BUTTMONKEY" and then we hear some "eee'ing" of what sounds like monkeys, and then the clip goes on to the "but we are headed down the path of failure" part of their formulaic tripe. I find it to be hilarious.
