ABC News: Kerry May Have Already Picked Gephardt
ABC's The Note ^ | July 4, 2004 | ABC News Political Unit

Posted on 07/04/2004 7:48:33 AM PDT by Bonaventure

Over the last few weeks, Sen. Kerry has had many more face-to-face meetings with potential picks than the press has reported.

One such meeting, several well-informed sources say, took place last Thursday night.

Kerry was in his home in Georgetown, and at around 10:30 pm, the last reporter staking him out -- someone from ABC News -- appeared to leave for the night.

Our sources say that Kerry and his Secret Service agents then went the very short distance to the nearby home of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Albright is a supporter of Kerry and has her office now in the same office building in Washington as the Kerry campaign.

At Albright's house late Thursday night, Kerry had a meeting with just a small group of people -- one of whom, our sources say, seemed to be the person Kerry at that moment planned to pick as his running mate.

Although Kerry said as recently as yesterday that he has not made a decision, our sources believe that this meeting might have served as the final face-to-face session the future running mates will have before announcement day, which could be as soon as this Tuesday.

Of the three potential picks whose advisers have confirmed have handed over reams of background information and believe themselves to be still in the running, there's only one we think was in DC that night -- Dick Gephardt. Tom Vilsack's staff says he was in Iowa and John Edwards, like many great Americans, was at Disney World with his family.

Other options -- Senator Joseph Biden, former Defense Secretary Bill Cohen, well, we are still checking to pin down where they were on Thursday night.

Of course, Senator Kerry could have changed whatever decision he might have made since last Thursday, and it is possible he has sent mixed signals (purposefully or not) to his advisers.

The Kerry campaign had no comment on this.

Kerry should pick Mr. Potatohead. He could stick big ears on, crossed eyes, an idiot's grin and a funny haircut to make Mr. Potatohead look more stupid than him.

What? He's picking Gephard? Oh, never mind.

What, exactly, does Madame Notalbright do in her office in Georgetown ?

Roasting brisket and undermining the country?

Who cares? I am sick of all the hyped speculation by the media in an attempt to build some kind of excitement about this extremely boring candidate.

Those "sources" could be trying to force a Gephardt choice.

Does Gephardt deliver Missouri into Kerry's column?

No, but it puts it into play, while taking Florida off the table. It's actually Gore's original "Plan B" that McRatlife & Lehane decided by August 2000 was a losing proposition -- attack the Rust Belt/Farm Subsidy crescent (PA, OH, MI, WI, MN, IA, MO -- they already owned IL), organize the cemetary turn-out through the unions.

It's strictly a Last-Century losing strategy (it's all Mondale had going in '84), yet Lurch is stupid enough to rip a page from Gore's playbook that even Gore wouldn't put on the field.

Bush won MO conclusively in 2000:

Bush-Gore-Nader

1,189,924-1,111,138-38,515

50%-47%-2%

(Show-Me staters: Help make sure Ralph has no trouble getting on the MO ballot.)

Gephardt is the safer choice. And whatever his shortcomings, at least he's an adult, unlike the Clinton-Gore manchild duo.

But would be stereo loony-lefty-Bush-is-a-Nazi. That won't play well in Peoria.

kerryvilsack.com, kerryvilsack.org, kerryvilsack04.com, kerryvilsack04.org are all registered to the same person, presumably a Kerry functionary. For sites for the other candidates (incl. Hillary) the name's already been squatted upon. I think it'll be Vilsack.

For the record, I, too, think it'll be Edwards.

The "John-John" campaign. That'll be fun.

Table dances. $20 a pop.

So far, she's made 20 bucks. From Hillary.

Vilsack has done what no other RAT was able to do in Iowa in thirty years: win and hold the governorship.

Though he is an extreme leftwinger, he has been successful in maintaining a fairly moderate image, helped by the fact that he has had to govern with the GOP in control of both houses of the legislature.

He was counted out in his first election. His opponent was far ahead in the polls. But he made an impressive run at the end and won. His political skills should not be underestimated.

But he does have some vulnerabilities. He was busted by the press early on for issuing a secret executive order giving preferential hiring treatment to gays, lesbians, transgenders, etc.

Congressman Steve King, then a state senator, sued him over that and won.

If Kerry picks Gephardt, then the election SHOULD be in the bag for Bush. But I don't trust Gephardt any more than I trust Kerry.

"By contrast, look at how many tactical coups have been pulled off by the Bush team..."

Unfortunately, these coups by Bush are nullified by his inability or unwillingness to really get on the stick and publicize these achievements. It's like he's too modest to blow his own horn, but in a campaign that's a recipe for disaster. He simply has to do a better job of PR, especially on the economy and Iraq. Come to think of it, those are the only two issues worth discussing in this election. He can't just sit back and let the media, foursquare behind Kerry, nullify his accomplishments.

Hey, he's squandering a trillion dollars of our money to buy the Greedy Geezer vote with his "free" pill scam.

The Greedy Geezers will deliver for Bush, won't they? After all, it's not their money.

The only person that would cause the fireworks EFnK can not get on his own is Hitlery. She'll take it, realizing she will assume the Presidency when EFnK checks out of natural causes or has an emotional meltdown and is impeached.
