US lawmakers request UN observers for November 2 presidential election

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Several members of the House of Representatives have requested the United Nations to send observers to monitor the November 2 US presidential election to avoid a contentious vote like in 2000, when the outcome was decided by Florida.

Recalling the long, drawn out process in the southern state, nine lawmakers, including four blacks and one Hispanic, sent a letter Thursday to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) asking that the international body "ensure free and fair elections in America," according to a statement issued by Florida representative Eddie Bernice Johnson, who spearheaded the effort.

"As lawmakers, we must assure the people of America that our nation will not experience the nightmare of the 2000 presidential election," she said in the letter.

"This is the first step in making sure that history does not repeat itself," she added after requesting that the UN "deploy election observers across the United States" to monitor the November, 2004 election.

The lawmakers said in the letter that in a report released in June 2001, the US Commission on Civil Rights "found that the electoral process in Florida resulted in the denial of the right to vote for countless persons."

The bipartisan commission, they stressed, determined "that the 'disenfranchisement of Florida's voters fell most harshly on the shoulders of black voters' and in poor counties." Both groups vote predominantly Democratic in US elections.

The commission also concluded, the lawmakers added, that "despite promised nationwide reforms (of the voting system) ... adequate steps have not been taken to ensure that a similar situation will not arise in 2004 that arose in 2000."

Thirty-six days after the November 7, 2000 presidential election, after several state court interventions and vote recounts in numerous Florida counties, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Republican George W. Bush, awarding him all of Florida's 25 electoral votes.

The ruling tipped the balance against Democratic contender and then vice president Al Gore (news - web sites), who with 267 electoral votes lost to Bush's 271, only one more than the minimum 270 needed to clinch the presidential election.

It's a disgrace for a U.S. lawmaker to think the U.N. can do a better job of supervising the elections. I'd rather have the Democrats down in Palm Beach County than the U.N.

"The proposal is beyond the absurd!!!!"

Yes it is. They are desperate. Their lying, cheating, whining and recounting did not work in 2000. They must have not gotten enough votes from dead people. Even denying the military vote didn't work. Yes, they are desperate. These people, as far as I am concerned, are guilty of treason. Or, at least, they should be sent back home and replaced with people who respect their country and the election process. Considering they are legislators, they show a sad disregard for our American sovereignty and lack basic knowledge of our Constitution. In a word, they are DUMB! They do not belong in Congress.

Reminds me of the story of 2 guys going through a graveyard in Chicago, writing down names off of tombstones to add to voter rolls.
One of the men comes across an older grave. The marker is worn and hard to read. He spends several minutes trying to decipher the name and after a while the other tells him to give up and move on. He replies, "Hey, this guy has as much right to vote as anyone else in here."

"Hey, this guy has as much right to vote as anyone else in here." (in the graveyard)

===

That's about it. Wait until the ACLU files suit, that just because someone dies, doesn't mean, their voting rights should be taken away.

Grijalva chooses to side with a Mexican activist group (Derechos Humanos) rather than ask why "his countrymen" fear for their property and lives from illegal aliens.
Grijalva views himself as a defender of Mexico and other foreign illegal aliens. Is he also a supporter of La Raza, the militant Mexican activist group that would overthrow the state governments of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas in favor of the Republic of Mexico.

I trust that Corrine Brown, Eddie Johnson, et. al. know they are just blowing smoke. If not, then take note, any blue helmet in FL will be considered an invasion force. And the boys and I will act accordingly.

This all stems from the Liberal mindset that there must be someone to pass the buck too. Instead of ensuring that our laws prevent fraud and punish an offender.

The lawmakers said in the letter that in a report released in June 2001, the US Commission on Civil Rights "found that the electoral process in Florida resulted in the denial of the right to vote for countless persons."

The same US Commission on Civil Rights which, led by its dictatorial "Chairperson," Mary Francis Berry, denied dissenting Commissioners their opportunity to express their dissent and refused to seat a member legitimately appointed by President Bush.

As for the "countless persons" denied the right to vote, they were "countless" because no one could find any to count.

... the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Republican George W. Bush, awarding him all of Florida's 25 electoral votes.

The Court did nothing of the sort. President Bush having won the popular vote count in Florida, the Florida Electors met in the State capital in December and cast their electoral votes. The Supreme Court did not "award" those votes to Mr. Bush.
