Fahrenheit''s Embedded Cameraman Revealed
IMDB ^ | June 27, 2004 | Hildy

Posted on 06/27/2004 8:50:33 AM PDT by Hildy

Scenes in Fahrenheit 911 of U.S. soldiers taunting and sexually humiliating Iraqi civilians following the successful invasion were shot by Urban Hamid, an embedded Swedish-Iraqi journalist who is presently a doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado, the university's student newspaper Camera disclosed today (Tuesday). Moore has declined to respond to questions from interviewers about whether he resorted to subterfuge in order to embed photographers among U.S. forces and has been criticized for not showing footage of the abuses to U.S. military authorities earlier. But Camera reported that the controversial footage by Hamid was actually shown at a theater in Boulder as long ago as March 1 and was subsequently brought to Moore's attention. Hamid, who has lived in the U.S. for the past 12 years, told the newspaper that he has returned to Iraq three times in the past year, presumably to continue to document the course of the war. "Every time I go back, it seems it's gotten worse ... When I last went back, people were so tired and exhausted and had lost hope. It's extremely sad to see."

The RNC is dominated by the big tent, "progressive," Dale Carnegie trained factions. Doing assertive, truthful and nasty exposes is not considered "beginning in a friendly way." If we are to stem the tide, and turn things around so that the Right are actually on the cutting edge in the political conversation (rather than always reacting to the Left) then we need to drop "begin in a friendly way" in favor of "play to win." Politics is not like running a business - there are real winners and losers - if I gain, my opponent loses. The Dale Carnegie mentality is not supportive of such harsh realities. OK, flame away 20th century "progressives!"

1970: Arlo Guthrie’s interminable "Alice’s Restaurant" was playing when KPFT was blown off the air by a dynamite attack on their transmitter…..the first station to be so targeted in the history of broadcast radio. A second attack soon followed; federal agents ultimately arrested a Ku Klux Klansman for the bombings.

Dynamite attack on their transmitter whilst "Alice's Restaurant" was playing.

Interesting.

All this new information is most interesting!  Great job, guys.

Well, well, well.  It appears that Nick Berg was well-acquainted with the significance of "Alice's Restaurant" to left-wing liberals, wasn't he?  What ordinary 26-yr-old guy would know about a long-forgotten 1966 rock-&-roll song that was associated with pirate low power FM radio (LPFM) stations?  Unless he was a part of the LPFM pirate movement himself, that is.  Thanks for figuring it out for us!

REVIEW for newcomers:

Berg's e-mail to the "shareholders:"

"Word had spread due to the presence of certain items amongst my stuff that I was Israeli," Mr. Berg wrote. "So I felt a bit like Arlo Guthrie walking into a jail full of mother rapers and father stabbers as an accused litterbug."

Actual lyrics from the Arlo Guthrie song:

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W's where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the bench next to me.  http://www.arlo.net/lyrics/alices.shtml

History of Alice's Restaurant pirate radio station:

Alice's Restaurant Rock Radio
Europe's favourite album station

Perhaps the most well known rock station and one of the longest lived pirates, was Alice's Restaurant - who could forget a name like that? Founded by Dave Lane, and kept afloat by 'the team', Alices was described as a "rock giant" in newspaper columns, and you can still see the famous Alice's skull n' crossed guitars logo on remarkably hardy T-shirts today.  www.freewebs.com/rockradioeurope/londonrockradiohistory.htm

The LPFM / Alice's Restaurant connection appears to be well-known.  This generated 406 hits:

Where did I read it that Michael Moore is HEAVILY involved with Indymedia????

Could you be thinking of the "Center for Alternative Media"? That is a foundation he apparently set up a decade ago. Here's a couple of snippets:

Michael Moore: At Large
Patricia Brennan. The Washington Post. Jul 17, 1994. pg. y.07

With $1 million from the profits he earned from "Roger & Me," Moore established the Center for Alternative Media in New York, where he now lives. The center supports independent filmmakers and social action groups and has dispensed more than $250,000 in grants ranging from $1,000 to $20,000. Among the recipients were Flint's homeless shelters and the four families shown being evicted in the movie.

Michael and us: An interview with Michael Moore
Dan Georgakas, Barbara Saltz. Cineaste.
New York: 1998. Vol. 23, Iss. 3; pg. 4, 4 pgs

Cineaste: Ah, there you go again, striking yet another righteous pose.

Moore: All I know is that my critics don't come from the working class. We never get anyone who works in a factory ask why we are so simplistic, why we live in New York, why Disney distributes our film. The year we sold Roger & Me I was filling out an IRS form that showed I made twelve grand that year. We were determined that, if the film became successful and we got through the door, we were not going to shut the door behind us. That's why we set up a foundation and put half our money from Roger & Me into it. We've given out over half a million dollars in grants. We've helped fund seventy different organizations, from ACT-UP to The Black Filmmakers Foundation. We've put money into films such as The Panama Deception, A Perfect Candidate, and Just Another Girl on the IRT. This is who we are and where we come from. If that's posing, maybe more people should pose.

That's when Andrew Robert Duke, an entrepreneur from Boulder, overheard us and said he knew a guy who could get us a place. His spiel ended with the promise, "I can even get you pork chops." Duke is one of the friendliest guys I've ever met, and it's his biggest asset. He seems to have met everyone in Iraq, and I remember another night when I sat at a table in the Finar with Duke, an American expat who'd lived in the Philippines for decades, and a couple Englishmen whose Britannic reserve floated precariously on an ocean of gin. There was some unguarded talk about attempts to influence politics in the Caucasus through assassination.

(snip)

Duke is a businessman--a key part of the largest private donation of meat to Iraq, a player in the revamping of the power grid.

ANDY DUKE, FRIEND OF NICHOLAS BERG: Well, Nicholas was down the hall from me at the hotel. He was one door away from me. So, I got to meet him a couple of times when he was here in December, and then got to know each other. During the five days before he left we spent some time together. He was in the power business, which is a business that I understand. And basically, he was a very, very brave young man who very much loved his parents, and this is a horrible tragedy. All of us who knew Nick feel terrible for Nick personally, but also for his family and the people that he left behind.

O'BRIEN: Yes, and I would say everybody who has heard this story and didn't know Nick or his family has felt that way as well. He was released from prison in Mosul or a detention center in Mosul on April 9. What did he tell you when he saw you on that day about that detention?

DUKE: Well, Nick actually kind of thought it was sort of funny. I mean, you know, he didn't -- he thought it was crazy that he had been detained, and he couldn't understand why it had taken so long for him to be released.

O'BRIEN: Did he understand? Did he have any clue as to why he was being questioned and what the tone and the tenor of the questions were? I know that the FBI visited with him several times.

DUKE: Unfortunately for you, when I was talking to Nick, I was talking to him more about what he was going to be doing going forward than what had happened to him during that detention. You know, I think he kind of wanted to get it behind him, and he was looking forward to seeing his family and friends and going home to Westchester, taking some time with his parents and siblings.

O'BRIEN: There is some word that he declined an offer to be brought out of the country safely. Does that sound like the Nicholas Berg you know considering what you've said a couple of times now about just how much he wanted to get home to see his family and really get out of that country by that point?

DUKE: It absolutely is consistent with him. I mean, this is a guy who had his own barbells at a hotel. So,, you know, I can -- I don't know. With Nick, and given the circumstances in what subsequently happened, it's impossible to look back and draw any kind of conclusion.

O'BRIEN: When did you first hear about this horrific murder? And what was your reaction to the details that have emerged since then?

DUKE: One of our mutual friends, Cataline Gambus (ph), came up to my room and woke me up and said you have to see this. Come downstairs right now and take a look at what happened to Nick. And I went downstairs.

Shockingly, I had received an e-mail from Nick's mother just a couple of days before, saying that she was -- the family was going to retain a private investigator, and that the investigator would probably be in touch with me. Mrs. Berg is a very tough and persistent woman. I have spoken with her previously, and I knew that.

So then, when I went downstairs and saw this tragic and shocking -- I would also use the word disgusting -- video, I was just very shaken.

O'BRIEN: Do you have any intentions of leaving Iraq now in the wake of this?

DUKE: I think that my intention is not to leave Iraq. I don't want to gratify these terrorists, these murderers by cutting and running. I want to continue with my efforts here on behalf of the Americans and the British people in trying to rebuild the power system and power grid that's here in Iraq.

O'BRIEN: Andy Duke, a friend of Nick Berg, joining us this morning. Thanks for joining us to talk about your relationship with him. We appreciate it.

DUKE: Thanks.

Better start copying the guestbook from hamid's website if you think you may want to read it later. With this photo linked from his website, it'll give him a head's up and things may start disappearing like they did on Moore's.

It looks as if Mr. Hamid may have been jealous of all the broo-ha-ha that Michael Moore has been receiving over the movie and wanted credit for some of it. Just an idea, anyway. I can't imagine how Moore would be happy about being associated with this guy.

Nita, please see that this Urban Hamid was recently of Boulder Colorado, and Maggie has noted that Berg had interacted in Baghdad with Andrew Duke, also of Boulder. Did you ever find out what business Andrew Duke was affiliated with?

I don't remember. I'll have to go back and look in my files. It may be tomorrow before I can get to it, though.

Thanks for all the pings. And I did read the article in #85. Thanks. Right now I'm copying things such as that article before they start disappearing.

Berg interviewed for Michael Moore film
Saturday, May 29, 2004 Posted: 5:48 PM EDT (2148 GMT)

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- In an unused interview shot in Virginia for Michael Moore's latest film, the American who was beheaded in Iraq said he was concerned about security there as he prepared to seek work as an independent businessman, his family said Saturday.

Moore's crew shot the 16-minute interview with Nicholas Berg during an Iraqi business conference in Arlington, Virginia, on December 4, said his brother, David Berg.

Hamid sure seems to have many identities... and have close calls with abduction.
Philippine Daily Inquirer, Feb 12, 2002 pNA
Military shifts focus to Jolo; 10 Abus killed.
COPYRIGHT 2002 Financial Times Information Ltd.
Byline: Martin P. Marfil

THE MILITARY has shifted the focus of its counter-terrorism campaign from Basilan to Jolo where 10 Abu Sayyaf bandits were killed Sunday in fierce clashes with Army soldiers.

Lt. Gen. Roy Cimatu, chief of the Southern Command based in Zamboanga City, said three Army battalions were now hunting down about 100 Abu Sayyaf gunmen in Jolo.

"The intention is to comply with the presidential directive to finish off the Abu Sayyaf. So, we are now shifting our main effort in Jolo while we conduct mopping-up operations in Basilan and try to rescue the hostages," Cimatu said.

Both Basilan and Jolo are considered Abu Sayyaf strongholds. The bandits, who have been linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network, are holding an American missionary couple and a Filipino nurse in Basilan.

It was in Jolo, however, where the bandits kept for months 21 mostly foreign hostages they seized from a Malaysian resort in 2000 and later freed in exchange for millions of dollars in ransom.

Cimatu said intelligence reports indicated that the Abu Sayyaf in Jolo had linked up with 150 armed followers of jailed Moro rebel leader Nur Misuari.

Clashes erupted in a remote village of Patikul town on Sunday when Army soldiers on patrol caught up with about 80 Abu Sayyaf bandits.

"Based on the assessment of our troops that conducted the clearing operations, about 10 rebels were killed," Col. Romeo Tolentino, an Army brigade commander in Jolo, told reporters.

Army soldiers pounded Abu Sayyaf positions with 105-mm cannon. They launched the attack after bandits killed six soldiers, including a young lieutenant, in an ambush last weekend.

The clash coincided with the arrival of more US soldiers and military equipment in Zamboanga City prior to the start of the controversial RP-US military training exercise aimed at stamping out the Abu Sayyaf.

Kidnap attempt

In Zamboanga City, the military reported that Abu Sayyaf bandits attempted to abduct two foreign freelance journalists covering the Balikatan 02-1 exercises.

The two journalists were identified as Christopher Johnson, a Canadian, and Urban Hamid, a French national of Egyptian descent.

The pair, who arrived last week, were preparing to board a ferry bound for Basilan on Friday when two men posing as Army soldiers approached them and said they had been sent to assist the reporters.

The journalists became suspicious and contacted the military, who told them to return immediately to their hotel in Zamboanga City.

"The two journalists declined (the invitation of the suspects) after sensing danger because the men failed to show their IDs," said Lt. Col. Fredesvindo Covarrubias, head of Southcom civil relations group.

"Intelligence reports indicated that the men are Abu Sayyaf members trying to lure the journalists," said Capt. Harold Cabunoc, commander of the Army Scout Ranger unit in Basilan.

"We did not send anybody to fetch foreign journalists," he said.

The military last week warned foreign journalists against venturing in to Basilan, saying they faced the threat of being kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf.

Dozens of foreign reporters have been flocking to Zamboanga City to cover the six-month war games.

In 2000, the Abu Sayyaf snatched several foreign journalists who were covering the Jolo hostage crisis.

Presidential spokesperson Rigoberto Tiglao earlier said the threat against journalists was real and the military warning was not meant to scare reporters.

He said that other Moro rebel groups operating in the area could also try to "take foreigners hostages."

"Even in Pakistan, that has become a big problem because a Wall Street Journal reporter has been abducted," Tiglao said, referring to American Daniel Pearl, who vanished last month while exploring the underworld of Islamic militants in Pakistan's volatile southern city of Karachi.
