Iran seeks swap of Brits for suicide attackers

Report says 40 Revolutionary Guard 'volunteers' held by UK

Iran apprehended British military personnel and Navy vessels earlier this week in order to secure release of 40 "suicide operations volunteers" held by the UK, according to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard source.

The source told the London Arabic-language daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the British Army command in Iraq received the demand from the Revolutionary Guard, reported the Middle East Media Research Institute.

According to the source, the content of the message was very simple: "Release our comrades, whom you are holding, and we will release your soldiers."

Homeland Security official sees increased al-Qaida threat ahead of November elections
Associated Press

VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Intelligence chatter that is "stronger and more robust" than usual is heightening concerns al-Qaida might launch attacks timed to the presidential election or the political conventions, a senior U.S. security official told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Adm. James Loy, deputy head of the Department of Homeland Security, said in an interview that his agency has received "nothing specific" about an attack on those events.

But, he said, there has been a "constant stream of intelligence that has been stronger and more robust."

"As you progress onward to the Democratic Party convention and the Republican Party convention and then the election itself, it has all added up to a registry of concern," Loy said by telephone from an international conference on terror in Vienna.

Outside the United States, Osama bin Laden's terror network was likely to repeat the tactics of the March 11 Madrid bombings, which killed 190 people. Three days later, the governing Popular Party — which strongly backed U.S. policy in Iraq — was defeated in Spain's general election. The new prime minister pulled Spanish troops from Iraq.

While refusing to directly link the bombing attacks to the defeat of Jose Maria Aznar's government, Loy pointed to "what the terrorists think rightly or wrongly was cause and effect."

Loy said that while "70 to 80 percent" of the al-Qaida leadership has been killed or captured since the Sept. 11 attacks there was no room for complacency, as demonstrated by the nearly 180 terrorist attacks registered last year.

Worldwide, governments must "recognize that there is no return to the normalcy" preceding the Twin Tower attacks, he said, adding that the post-Sept. 11 war on terror was part of the "new normalcy."

On Wednesday, Loy told representatives of 55 nations that their governments should consider fingerprinting travelers as part of international security standards for travel documents. He said international fingerprint databases are far larger than databases containing information on facial features.

But Loy told the meeting of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe that such measures cannot threaten fundamental values like liberty and respect for privacy.

The U.S. Congress voted in 2002 to require travelers from 27 mostly European countries to have tamperproof passports that can be read by machine.

OSCE member states have already agreed to introduce machine-readable passports by the end of 2005.

Thank you for your offer to help.

Honestly's post #140 has interesting looking reports under terrorism (the link at the bottom on right) the first one I wanted was in Cuban, but some are in English.

What I read there, ties in with what is just being released in the news here.

there was Nuclear and Bio there to read.

All help is wonderful.

I think AQ terrorism from South America/Cuba is a FAR GREATER threat than the public is aware of. In Venezuela, the anti-US president has close ties with Castro, and he reportedly gave $1M to OBL post 9-11. The following link makes a disturbing allegation:

N.J. POLICE HEAR ISRAELI METHODS FOR DEALING WIH SUICIDE BOMBERS

6/24/2004, 4:12 p.m. ET
By Tom Bell
The Associated Press

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — The threat of suicide bombings is woven into the daily lives of Israelis, from the private security guards on post in front of every shop to preschool children being taught evasive techniques.

"You see on a talk show two 11-year-old girls talking about their ambition to become suicide bombers instead of talking about Paris Hilton," Israeli police Commander Shmuel Zoltak said of Palestinian militant groups that recruit youngsters for the attacks.

While Israel faces a near-constant stream of suicide bombings, security officials there said they have one advantage over New Jersey police trying to prevent similar attacks.

"We know where our problem comes from," said Simon Perry, a brigadier general with the Israeli Police and Ministry of Public Safety. "Your problem is more complex."

Israeli police experts shared their experiences as part of the state police effort to prepare New Jersey law enforcement agencies for the possibility of suicide bombings.

The Israelis said they use threat assessments, close coordination of the various emergency response agencies, and repeated practice drills to keep suicide bombing casualties to a minimum.

Perry said nine out of 10 suicide bombing plots aimed at civilian targets are foiled, but said that percentage is not considered a great success. He said 17 suicide bombers were stopped from carrying out attacks in the past month alone.

"But if we miss the 18th one, it's a failure," Perry told the crowd of about 400 police officials attending a seminar at Princeton University.

The idea for Thursday's session came after New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes visited Israel last year as part of a law enforcement exchange program.

"As a result, we changed the way we do business," Fuentes said, referring to security measures implemented by the state police.

The Israeli officials also heard reports from the state police on homeland security measures taken in New Jersey. In addition, they got a look Wednesday at the weapons, trucks and other equipment at the state's disposal for fighting terrorism.

Thursday's seminar was the first coordinated by the Washington, D.C.-based Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs. Others are scheduled to be held in Washington and San Francisco.

Steven L. Pomerantz, former assistant director of the FBI and an adviser for the Jewish institute, said police in the United States must get prepared for suicide bombings.

"I don't want to say it's inevitable, but it's a real threat," Pomerantz said.

New Jersey police attending the seminar were shown graphic photos of suicide bombings that were carried out at restaurants, on buses and at other public places in Israel. They also heard stories of Israeli police subduing suicide bombers or clearing areas before detonation.

Civilians in Israel join police in being alert for suspicious packages and other potential problems, Perry said. About 200,000 checks were done by the Israeli bomb squad in 2001.

Yoram Hessel, the former head of global operations for the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, said gathering information on the groups that seek to conduct terrorist acts was another key to success for that country's relatively small police force.

"We have a high degree of prevention on the basis of intelligence," Hessel said.

Atlantic City police Capt. Rich Halvorson, commander of the bomb squad unit, said that hearing about the tactics and strategies used by Israel will help police departments in New Jersey.

"We've all been taught lessons through other countries and Israel is a good teacher for our police," Halvorson said. "Training is the most important part of it."

I'm just catching up today and I'm taking the puppy out for dinner while my wife has dinner with the "girls," so I may have to leave......but I read on the *bang_list today that Saudi Arabia has stated that they will allow foreigners to go armed if they feel threatened. All that is required is that the weapon be something one can legally carry in the U.S. so I guess that rules out a Vulcan or RPG. Still that is pretty encouraging. I'd hang around over there if they'd let me wear my favorite .45 and keep five spare mags of JHP ammo on me, and they'd never even have to know I'd dipped the bullets in bacon grease.

Survey Shows Chavez Losing Venezuela Referendum
VOA News
24 Jun 2004, 16:39 UTC

A new poll says a majority of Venezuelans would vote to recall President Hugo Chavez in a referendum in August.

The poll, released Wednesday, found that 57 percent of Venezuelans would vote to recall Mr. Chavez, while 43 percent would back the leftist leader.

The independent Venezuelan polling firm (Datanalisis) conducted the survey

. If voters choose to recall Mr. Chavez in August 15 referendum, new elections must be held within 30 days.

Opponents accuse the president of trying to steer Venezuela toward a Cuban-style communist dictatorship. Mr. Chavez says he is working to help the poor, and pledges to defeat the recall vote.

There's that reference to the falcons again

I keep thinking about the falcon reference as well. The only things I can come up with are:
The Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta is a large city, home to one of the largest airports and home of the CDC.
This one might be stretching it a bit, but, falcons and hawks are both raptors (birds of prey). Nickname for conservatives is hawks. Therefore the current administration are hawks. That puts us back in D.C., unless there is some upcoming republican "hawk" get together in Atlanta (falcons).
