Dukakis a conundrum for Kerry
Boston Globe ^ | June 20, 2004 | By Yvonne Abraham

On the hustings, US Senator John F. Kerry has tried to put some distance between himself and Michael S. Dukakis, the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee, who was governor of Massachusetts when Kerry was lieutenant governor.

He is no Dukakis, Kerry has said, trying to avoid being tarred with the Massachusetts liberal label Republicans so firmly slapped on the former governor 16 years ago. Kerry has showcased his military service, his record as a prosecutor, and his centrist views.

They might as well trot the little fellow out because voters will be reminded of young John's stint as The Runt's Lt (jg) Governor in the 80's.

Given the way the name Dukakis has been avoided by the Kerry campaign. I connect the two at every given opportunity.

An endorsement by Typhoid Mary Dukakis will be the kiss of Al Gore.

"Dukakis is enjoying something of a comeback in Massachusetts."

Good news!

"he will be honored outside the FleetCenter during convention week: Local and national Democrats are organizing a party to fete him."

We must make sure that it's well publicized!

Maybe Kitty, Teresa, and Eleanor McGovern could do a trio act--a German number in dirndls? a can-can--how's this: a can-can wearning burqas?--maybe sing something from Hair.

Maybe Michael Moore could narrate a Leni Riefenstahl retrospective!

Larry Flynt could MC!

"My wife, Eleanor, and I have sat through these events unnoticed, unrecognized, and, I suspect, unwanted."

That's the most astute observation George McGovern has ever made.

If he doesn't want to be compared to Dukakis he should get rid of his $5000 bike and speedos.

By contrast, Kerry has embraced another famed Massachusetts liberal on the trail, US Senator Edward M. Kennedy. And Kennedy will have a prominent role at the convention, delivering a speech to delegates, and probably the nation, on Tuesday night of convention week.

Swimmer Ted speaking before the nation!!! That should be fun to watch.

I hope they manage to separate him from his liquor bottle before he speaks. Not!

Hey, forget Dukakis! When's Fat Ted going to plant a smooch on Kerry a la Al and Tipsy? Should be right around the time we bring the marriage act up for a vote.

Kerry has tried to put some distance between himself and Michael S. Dukakis...who was governor of Massachusetts when Kerry was lieutenant governor.

In other words, Kerry was Dukakis' Lt. Governor.

Priceless.

John Kerry served as lieutenant governor under Michael Dukakis, because Dukakis was the STRONGER one of the pair.

Lieuenant governor is kind of like Vice President. You don't want someone smarter or better than you serving in that slot, if you are the Governor or President. By definition, then, Dukakis was probably a better administrator in every way than John Kerry could have been. Even today. And Kerry only spent two years in that job.

John Kerry does not have 20 years experience as Senator. He has, essentially, one year's experience, twenty times.

"Dukakis is enjoying something of a comeback in Massachusetts."

I live in Mass., and have seen absolutely no evidence of any such thing. The man's name hasn't even been mentioned by the media in years.

It's a made up statement.

In my book Kerry has always been the weak sister in Massachusetts politics; playing second fiddle to Teddy "Fat Boy" Kennedy and even "Pee Wee" Dukakis.

This experience will serve him well when he plays second fiddle to George W. Bush in November
