BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket slammed into a U.S. logistics base near the city of Balad Wednesday afternoon, killing two U.S. soldiers and wounding 21 people, the military said.

Fourteen of the injured were taken to the U.S. Army's 31st Combat Support Hospital and seven were treated at a clinic on the U.S. base, known as Camp Anaconda, according to a military statement.

Balad is 50 miles north of Baghdad.

We have adopted a soldier thru Adopt A Platoon.com

God bless you C A W T.

After some of us, freepers adopted Ceegar-man US Marine, I received the following e-mail from someone that was surfing on the net.

I stumbled across the free republic web site and saw the name of a friend of mine. I want to thank you for every wonderful word of support posted and for the admiration you appear to give our men and women. I forwarded the link to April and Nick, I hope you don't mind.

My husband was with Nick and the rest of Bravo tanks and 3/4 in Iraq last year. Although he has been transferred to another section in the military we have a lot of friends still over there today. He has a lot of friends and a lot of young men and women he helped train in harm's way and I know he believes he should be there at their side.

Many of the military don't realise the support they do have back here and I think it is important to them and their families when it is displayed to them. This is a wonderful tribute to them. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

There is another way to touch the lives of the troops and that is to go to www.amillionthanks.org ... a young girl has inspired her school to support her efforts in forwarding a million thank you letters to the troops. I know Nick touched your lives and he is an important friend to my family but this will allow you to touch the lives of men and women who are daily putting their lives on the line.

As a spouse I want to thank you all!!!!

Lisa

My son-in-law is based in Camp Anaconda. Every one of these announcements make me a nervous wreck.

I can imagine Gator113 believe me. My son is home now, but just knowing that there are others sons and love ones over there in harms way just makes me shudder.

So, do they patrol the radius of possible launch sites?

Thank you, 1Sgt Mike, and all your "kids", for your part in helping to keep all of us free and safe. Hoping they will all be back on US soil soon.

Well, yes, I suppose. But they can't be present all the time, so I suppose someone could position a laucher, fire a rocket, and disappear in a matter of minutes between patrols.

Well, something as important as a base, why wouldn't it be patrolled round the clock? Apart from the damage and injuries, hitting a coalition base is a terrific boost in morale for the terrorists.

From what I've seen on TV (on footage not related to this specific case) there are permanent checkpoints, but not a permanent cordon of troops. And I suppose if the base is set amidst a city, you can't have a really decent defense perimeter because of the many buildings surrounding the compound.
