Al Qaeda Originally Envisioned Plot With 10 Jets 9/11 Panel Finds No Collaboration Between Iraq, Al Qaeda

The terrorist attacks carried out on Sept. 11, 2001, were originally envisioned as an even more spectacular assault involving 10 jetliners on the east and west coasts, but the plan was scaled back and was nearly derailed on several occasions by setbacks and squabbling among senior al Qaeda officials, according to a new report released this morning.

The date for the attacks was uncertain until weeks before they were carried out, and there is evidence as late as Sept. 9, 2001, that ringleader Mohamed Atta had not decided whether the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania would target the U.S. Capitol or the White House, according to the report, which was issued by the independent commission probing the Sept. 11 attacks. One of the hijacking pilots apparently came close to abandoning the plot altogether, the panel found.

In an overview of al Qaeda released in a separate report earlier this morning, the commission also found "no credible evidence" that al Qaeda collaborated with Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq on the Sept. 11 strikes or any other attacks on the United States. That finding comes in the wake of statements Monday by Vice President Cheney that Iraq had "long-established ties" with al Qaeda, and comments by President Bush yesterday backing up that assertion.

I thought nuclear weapons on the islamic world were the answer that night on 9/11.

I still think so today.

These two positions are not, as implied, mutually exclusive.

Once again, the so-called 9/11 Commission release "findings" in advance of their report. Also, I wasn't aware that the Commission was charged with finding out wether or not, Saddam and Osama worked together, so why are they commenting on that?

There was no credible evidence that the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, but they had ties to the Japanese.

This commission is a laughable, partisan joke.

I am sure...they couldn't brainwash enough idiots to believe that they were dying for a great cause and the whole 72 virgins thing...I can hear the agruing..."If you think this is such a great idea, why the hell aren't you flying one of the planes?"

No collaboration between Iraq and AQ? What a crock.

During the 90's the press wrote about the relationship between OBL and Saddam all the time.

In 1998 the Clinton administration talked about how OBL agreed not to attack Iraq in exchange for WMD training.

It's fun watching the leftists deny that which they once knew.

What isn't fun is watching the current adminstration ignore all the evidence, to their peril.

This seems to be their pattern. The Commission won't have a final report done until after the election, but they will dribble "findings" up to the election.

Page 3......"The Sept. 11 panel, which opened its last two-day round of hearings this morning, said in a report on al Qaeda's history that the government of Sudan, which gave sanctuary to al Qaeda from 1991 to 1996, persuaded bin Laden to cease supporting anti-Hussein forces and "arranged for contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda." But the contacts did not result in any cooperation, the panel said.

"There have been reports that contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda also occurred after bin Laden had returned to Afghanistan [in 1996], but they do not appear to have resulted in a collaborative relationship," the report says. "Two senior bin Laden associates have adamantly denied that any ties existed between al Qaeda and Iraq. We have no credible evidence that Iraq and al Qaeda cooperated on attacks against the United States."

My reasoning is that al Qaeda would not admit to a Iraq collaboration relationship, as it would benefit al Qaeda with Anti-Bush and Anti-Blair sentiments at home and with our allies(?).

"I thought nuclear weapons on the islamic world were the answer that night on 9/11."

Yes, we should use them on the one thing the terrorists really care about, Mecca and Medina. Start with Mecca.

If Mecca is turned into black, radioactive glass, then they lose their holy black meteor and they can no longer make the hajj, a key part of their cult.

And suddenly they become reasonable and embrace Western values ?

I wonder if what is need there is not a schism. Islam is no more monolithic than Christianity, and there are enough differences between Shiits and Sunnites and Druzes and Sufi and other variants to manoeuver.

Interesting isn't it? Why would they comment on that? Kinda like the most partisan members of the panel making political speeches about Iraq during questioning of witnesses. Or quoting from Clake's book like it was gospel. Or insinuatiing that the White House wasn't cooperating.

This whole panel is a joke. I,for one, will not even read their stinking report or believe anything I hear about it. It is nothing but an election year, political witch hunt.

The dnc is placing the noose around their own necks, that's why. Gorelick and others were ordered to destroy the credibility of the commission. Claiming 'there was no connection between al Qaeda and Saddam' will be the trap door springing on the rats when the names of the hijackers are found among the records kept at Salman Pak ... training on the boeing fuselage parked there.

Actually, while it says no cooperation on ATTACKS AGAINST THE US. It does shatter the myth that they were enemies, and in fact puts them on communicating terms. That said, lets look at EXACTLY WHAT THE PRESIDENT SAID. (SOTU).

..... With nuclear arms or a full arsenal of chemical and biological weapons, Saddam Hussein could resume his ambitions of conquest in the Middle East and create deadly havoc in that region. And this Congress and the America people must recognize another threat. Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications, and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of al Qaeda. Secretly, and without fingerprints, he could provide one of his hidden weapons to terrorists, or help them develop their own.

Before September the 11th, many in the world believed that Saddam Hussein could be contained. But chemical agents, lethal viruses and shadowy terrorist networks are not easily contained. Imagine those 19 hijackers with other weapons and other plans -- this time armed by Saddam Hussein. It would take one vial, one canister, one crate slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known. We will do everything in our power to make sure that that day never comes. (Applause.)

Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike? If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option. (Applause.)

Bush is Vindicated, by the report. No matter how they try to spin it.
