MORE than 50 years after they were executed as So viet spies, the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg continues to generate intense emotion on both sides of the political spectrum. For the left, it has long been an article of faith that two wholly innocent radicals were framed and executed solely because of their politics.

Now, the couple's granddaughter, Ivy Meeropol, has made a documentary that largely reinforces that viewpoint.

Heir to an Execution, which premieres Monday on HBO, is a portrait of two people so filled with love and warmth they couldn't possibly have betrayed their country.

I must admit I'd never heard of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg until I watched "Angels In America" (screened here in Australia just last week), in which Merryl Streep did a far better New York Jewish accent than her execrable portrayal of Aussie Lindy Chamberlain (another supposedly wrongly-convicted woman).

Bump for later reading of the entire article...

This should not be a surprise. If you look at HBO/Showtime's line-up, it becomes rather evident that it's views share NOTHING in common with conservatism. If I remember correctly, old USSR files answered this question rather conclusively. True to form, HBO hasn't let that get in their way.

The September 21, 1944 cable: The Rosenbergs and the Greenglasses Back to Intro

This cable documents the act that eventually led to the downfall of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and their execution in 1953 -- namely, the recruitment of Ruth Greenglass, Ethel's sister-in-law. Ultimately, it was Ruth and David Greenglass who implicated the Rosenbergs, who became the only persons put to death for espionage in the U.S. during the Cold War.

The Greenglasses were ardent Communists. During the war, David was drafted and became a skilled machinist in an Army ordnance unit. He was transferred to Los Alamos in August 1944, the same month as Klaus Fuchs. There he joined a group that designed models of high-tech bomb parts, including implosion detonators for the plutonium bomb, the type eventually dropped on Nagasaki.

Ruth Greenglass told Julius Rosenberg about her husband's work. By then, Julius ("Liberal" in this cable) was heading up a sizeable group of spies working for the Soviets. As the cable suggests, Julius set about recruiting Ruth to join his group, with an eye to eventually pulling in her husband (see also November 14, 1944 cable). In this cable, Ruth's name is in clear text, because she's just being introduced to the Soviets; soon she would be given the cover name Osa ("Wasp"). In November, David wrote a letter to his wife saying he "most certainly will be glad to be part of the community that Julius and his friends have in mind." And so he was, under the cover name Kalibr ("Caliber").

Just as Klaus Fuchs' confession led the FBI to Harry Gold, so did Gold's confession guide them straight to David Greenglass. Gold told the FBI that while most of his trips to Los Alamos were to pick up goods from Fuchs, he once received materials from someone he described, according to his FBI interrogators, as "a soldier, non-commissioned, married, no children (name not recalled)."

When the FBI confronted David Greenglass, he confessed. Not one to bear up well, he also implicated not only Julius Rosenberg but also his own wife. Ruth, when questioned, corroborated her husband's statements about Julius' recruiting. Later, the Greenglasses also implicated Ethel, claiming she knew all about Julius' spying activities and even typed up espionage-related documents for him.

David Greenglass was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while his wife escaped prosecution. The Rosenbergs were not so fortunate. Convicted of conspiracy to provide atomic secrets to the USSR, they were sentenced to death. According to John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr, authors of Venona: Decoding Espionage in America, U.S. authorities never expected to carry out the executions. Rather, they thought the death sentence would force Julius to confess. He didn't, and neither did Ethel, and both died in the electric chair on June 19, 1953.

In a December 5th, 2001, Associated Press story, David admitted he lied under oath about his sister Ethel's involvement to reduce his own sentence and keep his wife Ruth out of prison. In an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes II," David said simply, "As a spy who turned his family in ... I don't care." David and Ruth Greenglass continue to live in the New York area under assumed names.

The September 21, 1944 cable Note: Consult the footnotes at the end of the cable for identities of individuals and definitions of terms appearing in capital letters.

Guilty as charged.

Good work!

I used to visit a friend daily. His name was Henry Wysor Marsh. He was head of naval intelligence for a short time. If I recall, it was 1946, when he started his stint. His advisor told him that we could only keep a secret from the Soviets for two weeks. They had a fatalistic attitude back then, it was so bad. Thank God the people running Venona were smarter than the average bear. I just wish they were in charge of our atomic secrets, and that Truman never started 'nukes for peace'. FReegards....

What the odds that FDRs and Trumans executive branch will get tarred with Uncle Joe Stalins brush.?. The Rosenbergs did'nt do it alone or without serious help from government officials. Well known this story, and verified by KGB records in Moscow.. Several books in the last few years about this have been written. Did Franklin Rooseveldt and Truman lay the foundation for the cold war.?. WORSE have they been obsolved of this crime agaisnt humanity. One thing was for sure, FDR was Stalins "bitch"..

Judge Kaufman's Statement Upon Sentencing the Rosenbergs

Citizens of this country who betray their fellow-countrymen can be under none of the delusions about the benignity of Soviet power that they might have been prior to World War II. The nature of Russian terrorism is now self-evident. Idealism as a rational dissolves . . .
I consider your crime worse than murder. Plain deliberate contemplated murder is dwarfed in magnitude by comparison with the crime you have committed. In committing the act of murder, the criminal kills only his victim. The immediate family is brought to grief and when justice is meted out the chapter is closed. But in your case, I believe your conduct in putting into the hands of the Russians the A-bomb years before our best scientists predicted Russia would perfect the bomb has already caused, in my opinion, the Communist aggression in Korea, with the resultant casualties exceeding 50,000 and who knows but that millions more of innocent people may pay the price of your treason. Indeed, by your betrayal you undoubtedly have altered the course of history to the disadvantage of our country.
No one can say that we do not live in a constant state of tension. We have evidence of your treachery all around us every day--for the civilian defense activities throughout the nation are aimed at preparing us for an atom bomb attack. Nor can it be said in mitigation of the offense that the power which set the conspiracy in motion and profited from it was not openly hostile to the United States at the time of the conspiracy. If this was your excuse the error of your ways in setting yourselves above our properly constituted authorities and the decision of those authorities not to share the information with Russia must now be obvious . . .
In the light of this, I can only conclude that the defendants entered into this most serious conspiracy against their country with full realization of its implications . . .
The statute of which the defendants at the bar stand convicted is clear. I have previously stated my view that the verdict of guilty was amply justified by the evidence. In the light of the circumstances, I feel that I must pass such sentence upon the principals in this diabolical conspiracy to destroy a God-fearing nation, which will demonstrate with finality that this nation's security must remain inviolate; that traffic in military secrets, whether promoted by slavish devotion to a foreign ideology or by a desire for monetary gains must cease.
The evidence indicated quite clearly that Julius Rosenberg was the prime mover in this conspiracy. However, let no mistake be made about the role which his wife, Ethel Rosenberg, played in this conspiracy. Instead of deterring him from pursuing his ignoble cause, she encouraged and assisted the cause. She was a mature woman--almost three years older than her husband and almost seven years older than her younger brother. She was a full-fledged partner in this crime.
Indeed the defendants Julius and Ethel Rosenberg placed their devotion to their cause above their own personal safety and were conscious that they were sacrificing their own children, should their misdeeds be detected--all of which did not deter them from pursuing their course. Love for their cause dominated their lives--it was even greater than their love for their children."

Several years ago the History Channel ran a British documentary on Soviet espionage in the US including an interview with the KGB (or GRU ?) handler of Julius and Ethel.

Praising their work for the USSR he maintained their part in atomic espionage was only peripheral, but their most notable contribution had been the theft and passing along of a radio proximity fuse for Anti Aircraft shells. American and allied fliers were killed in Korea with this stolen technology.

This coupled with Senator Moneyhan's direct confirmation of their guilt would seem sufficient to remove all doubts.

Btw, the KGB man said they were only incidental in the atomic espionage becaue the Manhatten Project had been thoroughly compromised from the beginning. Saying that there was one final mole who had never been convicted, he hinted without being specific that Oppenheimer was their man.

Here we go again! This case will go on and on like OJ. No mater how many times it comes up they still remain "Guilty". I remember back around 56' when they hated Ike, like they hate "W" now, because Ike ordered the switch to be pulled. I still posses the flier that was passed around on 14th St NYC condemning the upcoming execution of the Rosenbergs.

Understanding the passions behind this case is like trying to understand why folks up in Mass still vote for Ted Kennedy. Chappaquidick ... an open an shut case of outright neglect of a drowning (drowned?) woman for hours and hours before he reported to police where to find her.

To understand that, is to say the least, impossible. To understand Mass. voters willingness to return him to office? Utterly incomprehensible. Thus, the rosenbergs become comprehensible in a sense. Death, killing .... these people, liberal democrats (communists) just don't care how much blood flows as long as they win.

Liberals and the never-ending defense of the Rosenbergs..You know what this reminds me of, liberals and their never-ending defense of cop killer Mumia Abu Jamal (another animal from the 'religion of peace'). Despite the fact that 5 witnesses saw Jamal kill PO Danny Faulkner including a taxi driver who saw the whole thing from beginning to end, despite the fact that they found the gun in his hand, despite the fact that he never denied killing Po Faulkner, despite the fact that he was talking to people about killing a cop beforehand, liberals still hold concerts in his honor, constantly say he was set up by the government and/or never had a fair trial and/or is just outright innocent. Liberals and overwhelming evidence, in their fantasy land it`s never enough.
