Americans Say Iraq War Not Worth It -LA Times Poll

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A majority of U.S. voters now say it was not worth going to war in Iraq and feel the United States is getting bogged down there, according to a Los Angeles Times poll published on Friday.

In the survey of 1,230 registered voters conducted across the country from Saturday through Tuesday, 53 percent said it was not worth going to war in Iraq while 43 percent said it was and 4 percent said they did not know. The sample has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

The paper said the survey was the first time one of its voter surveys found a majority of voters doubting whether the situation in Iraq was worth the United States going to war there.

In a March L.A. Times survey 53 percent of voters said the war was worth fighting and 43 percent said it was not, a reverse of the current figure.

The paper said that 35 percent of American voters thought the United States was making good progress in Iraq while 61 percent said the country was getting bogged down there.

But 52 percent of voters said that they thought the United States was winning the war in Iraq and less than one in four said the insurgents were winning.

Despite a growing sense that the war was not justified, voters did not advocate a quick pullout of Iraq.

Less than 20 percent said America should withdraw its troops within weeks. Seventy-three percent said that there should be no specific date for withdrawal because disorder and civil war could result.

Fifty-five percent of voters said they disapproved of President Bush's handling of the war, while 44 percent approved.

Not me, not anyone I know.

Why don't they poll the millions of Iraqis and ask if they want hussein back.

Or poll the Afghanis and see if they would like the taliban back?

No. Its probably as loaded with Democrats as their worthless "Kerry leads nationwide" survey.

They didn't ask me, and I would suspect this is one of those WEIGHTED polls, just like the hanoi john v Bush poll they just did was...RATS were over sampled, as were anti-war peacenicks. They propably sample mainly college profs and students.

Well they had to bias the last poll with 13% more democrats so what is the guess on the bias here?

I will start with my guess ... 20% more democrats, all hate filled.

The campaign hasn't started yet, for the GOP at any rate, so I expect those numbers to change rapidly.

Since many Americans are not civic-minded and only casual observers of the world, it's not surprising that the steady drum beat of media criticism and partisan Democratic Party claptrap have taken their toll on public support. It would be more surprising if the high levels we initially had were still in existence. The Bush administration needs to make the case that Saddam's still being in place was not an acceptable option and that in the real world sacrifice and suffering are often the price of long term success.

Count me as one of those who don't think the war in Iraq is worth what it is costing us.

Its gone badly. But running away is not an option - it would be interpreted by our enemies as a sign of weakness and they would eventually mount attacks in the American homeland. A withdrawal from the Middle East is not going to placate our enemies or diminish the danger our country is facing in this age of Islamofascist terror.

If 9/11 had happened in LA or San Franciso, would the outcome of this poll be different?

What's your guess, still 13% bias or did Gallup use more?

Davis by 18.

Now that the media is in full Kerry campaign mode, I simply give up bothering with any of these polls. They have proved to be useless.

Can't wait for those juicy Kerry ads to start hitting the airwaves. They are going to be good :}
