I was on the ragged edge during the Service, but it didn't hit me until later...

After Mrs. Reagan left the casket, I turned off the TV and went outside to take down the Flag. What a beautiful, North San Diego County sunset! The air was still...

Then I heard what sounded like booms in the distance, at regular intervals. I remembered what they were - the Marines at Camp Pendleton were honoring the late President with a 50-gun sunset salute. What a melancholy sound. I stood at attention, tears streaming down my face, saluting.

Thanks for starting this thread - this is something I needed to share.

Godspeed, President Reagan.

I don't think President Reagan would have wanted his funeral to be used to knock the current president. Perhaps Ron Jr. wasn't talking about President Bush but I don't think his father's funeral was the place or the time to disperage people who are openly religious.

Most of us felt like we lost a member of our family this week. President Reagan would never had made a comment like that. He didn't put people down.

Maybe we will see the resurrection of the notion of heroes.

I believe this week went a LONG ways towards that resurrection...and I believe God's own Hand was in it, saving it for this moment in time.

I hope that you are right that heroes may return to American life. And I pray that God will usher forth that particular blessing upon us soon.

Thanks for the earlier compliment.

That's when I started crying, too. I've been on the edge of tears for several days because of watching so much of the funeral activities, but when she put her cheek on the casket, I burst out crying. I loved Reagan. We all felt so safe when he was president. Everything started looking up, people had pride in our nation again, everyone was doing better financially. He was so great. I feel fortunate to have lived while he was president.

My wife and I are both rather stoic types...not given to easily or openly showing emotion.

We were both crying during the service.

I do not believe that I have ever seen anything so emotionally trying as when Nancy, after day upon day of strength and reserve and fortitude simply couldn't retain what she truly felt when reaching the end of ceremony and the beginning of her own sunset journey without the man she lived for. The depth of her grief came from her all at once.

She saw all the outpouring of emotion from the nation all week -- she saw it and felt it more deeply than we can even imagine. And yet she did her part and remained focused on her own mission. We cried all across the nation, day after day. Her loss was so much greater and felt so much more deeply, creeping into every molecule of her body and right into her soul itself.

But it wasn't until that last moment that she showed us the depth of her loss. And that was something anyone who has even a modicum of human compassion -- even the last bit of the creator left in their soul -- could not see without their own passion coming forth. How do you not cry with her at that moment?

I lost it many times this week, with Reagan going by the White House for a last time, with Reagan going though DC for the last time, but for the rest of my life, I will never forget when the flag was given to Nancy, I really lost my composure. Her saying goodbye to her husband for a last time, us as a nation saying goodbye to the President for a last time.

"I lost it today during Margaret Thatcher's video'd speech during the service at the National Cathedral."

She's been magnificent through this whole affair. Her physician advised her against this trip but I think it's done her a world of good. I know it did me good to hear her speak and pay her last parting respects to her political soul-mate.

"and he was still going on and on and on about himself, mostly..."

I thought so too. But it was obvious that Nancy like him very much. I did like the part where he said that he went back to visit his father in South Africa and his father had a picture of President Reagan hanging up and his father pointed to the picture and said that Reagan was his President too. It showed how much appeal Reagan has world-wide.

Keep the faith. One day, all the seeds Ronald Reagan planted will bloom and his vision will become blueprint for a brave new world.

I liked Rev. Wenning, esp. the part where he talked about how "only in America" could it be that someone (an immigrant) like him would turn out to be the pastor for Ronald Reagan. Maybe yes, he was a bit "theatrical" but I really think Ronald Reagan would have loved what he said.

Another memorable scene that I just can't get out of my head. On Fox News, the long shot of the motorcade coming down the highway with the multitude of people on both sides of the highway with the vast farm fields on both sides of the road. It's was like the great American President coming through the American heartland one last time with thousands gathering from around the countryside to catch one last glimpse of their hero. What an awsome picture that was! Did anyone see that?

"May God raise up more like them."

Amen to that!

I heard Kissinger commenting tonight that Ronald Reagan was the perfect President for the 80s. For all Kissinger's alleged intelligence, he still doesn't see what so many of us know: Ronald Reagan would be the perfect President at any time.

Did you also notice that Margaret Thatcher was singing the Star-Spangled Banner at the final memorial? That, to me, besides the content of her unbelievably well-written and spoken speech, spoke volumes.

I don't have any issue with what he said, it's just that he was too theatrical, and I just thought that part was waaaaay too long.
