The gun salute system of the United States has changed considerably over the years. In 1810, the "national salute" was defined by the War Department as equal to the number of states in the Union--at that time 17. This salute was fired by all U.S. military installations at 1:00 p.m. (later at noon) on Independence Day. The President also received a salute equal to the number of states whenever he visited a military installation.
In 1842, the Presidential salute was formally established at 21 guns. In 1890, regulations designated the "national salute" as 21 guns and redesignated the traditional Independence Day salute, the "Salute to the Union," equal to the number of states. Fifty guns are also fired on all military installations equipped to do so at the close of the day of the funeral of a President, ex-President, or President-elect.
Today the national salute of 21 guns is fired in honor of a national flag, the sovereign or chief of state of a foreign nation, a member of a reigning royal family, and the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States. It is also fired at noon of the day of the funeral of a President, ex-President, or President-elect.
If they were smart .. they would drop that talking point real fast
I still remember the 80's as I'm sure many many others do also
Is Fox reading this thread? -- when I just looked over, there was no split screen, caption identified Mort K as speaking; now Brit is speaking (w/o caption) and the lower banner seems much smaller than it was!
Sorry to crack jokes but all I can think is how Dianne Feinstein will be hiding under her desk.
Thanks for the pictures.
MSNBC was worth switching to
Wow....I just figured out THOSE are pics from California....blurry screen....darn it all!!!
Advance cars for the procession are crossing Memorial bridge.
And what I wonder is how many gay men would still be alive if THEY had done less...
I finally had it with Fox and their graphics and after this is over, going to give them a piece of my mind about it too!
MSNBC is interviewing people in the crowd -- now interviewing someone in the military.
Thanks for the pics.! Wonderful sight to see. Brought another tear to my eyes.
There were incredible increases every year in AIDS funding during the REagan years. What he wouldn't do is use the Presidency to draw the moral equivalency between gay and straight life-styles like the gays wanted him too.
That's what they are ticked about, the funding was there all along
Prairie
A General was just on Fox [Militry District of DC?] who said that his organization was charged with the planning for this funeral, and they started in 1989.
If all the liberals were like Colmes it wouldn't be too bad. He's respectful at least.
How many gays would have gotten aids if the sat down and kept there months shut
Yeah, I'm waiting for CNN to decide this isn't the REAL news, and converge on some dive bar to ask the patrons why they weren't lining the streets. In CNN's world, that's the REAL news.
Reporting the procession is about four minutes away from when they transfer to the caisson.
