A Home for a Gay Channel By BILL CARTER
Published: May 30, 2004
EXECUTIVES of MTV Networks seemed to be caught a bit off guard by the hostile reaction to their announcement last week that they intend to create the first cable entertainment channel devoted to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender viewers, called Logo.
Religious groups, including the Traditional Values Coalition, denounced the idea as amounting to "moral anarchy" and promised to organize a boycott of companies that advertise on the channel.
But the executives behind the project remain convinced that MTV Networks will be able to overcome any impediments. After all, as the cable arm of Viacom Inc., it runs the most popular and powerful set of cable channels in the business - everything from Nickelodeon to Comedy Central, VH-1 and MTV itself.
MTV Networks is the only cable group with both the cultural position and, more importantly, the clout in the industry to launch a channel with so many enemies. Only a large media conglomerate has the leverage to get that type of programming distributed widely.
Judy McGrath, the group president of MTV Networks, said that within days of the announcement she was holding talks with cable system owners like Time Warner and Comcast about carrying the channel, not as part of their basic package but as part of their so-called digital tier. At the same time, she said, numerous companies had already contacted MTV about sponsoring the channel.
Logo is scheduled to begin operation in February. Very little programming has been announced, only a roster of movies, like "The Birdcage" and "Gods and Monsters." Ms. McGrath said that despite charges that the programming would be immoral and anti-family, the content would be "everyday basic cable television fare."
Just inform them that you don't want to have a cat that barks; it doesn't fit.
I don't think God has to apologize for anything.
Nor do I think he would compare 1 out of 100's of channels being "gay" to Sodom and Gomorrah which were completely given over to decadent behavior.
Remember Lot asked God to spare Sodom if He could find just a few righteous men. God couldn't find them.
No comparison to the USA.
What network ISN'T a shill for the gay lobby? This is not news. News would be a "Straight Channel".
Didn't MTV used to play rock videos? I have this vague memory of an old Dire Straits song...
Ooops!
And why, pray tell, would any company interested in making money "launch a channel with so many enemies?"
Shades of Err America!
You mean in the Bird Cage? Nathan Lane played Robin Williams' "Wife" in that movie.
Two motives - money, but primarily indoctrination.
Since they comprise 2% of the population, it has to be indoctrination and recruitment.
I'll be joining the boycott. I think alot of Americans are tired of having their values smeared in their face.
"Are they really that stupid?" True, such a clear example of one's passion leading to a really bad business decision.
Ooops!
No need to apologize. I know that no good Republican who loves the USA would smear the entire country because the activities of a small minority.
I mean the tall, ugly blonde "woman" that was supposed to be the mother of Williams' son.
Are you a professional apologist for evil in America or just an amateur one?
Nathan Lang is a (hmmmm) man...
You know what would be cool? A channel that plays nothing but music videos. Maybe MTV could work on something like that.
Video Killed the Radio Star
...we can't rewind, we've gone too far....
Okay, I'm showing my age, but I remember watching this video on the "new" music tv channel.
Where did I apologize for evil in America?
Show me the quote.
Unlike you I just don't enjoy hearing demagogue's smearing ALL Americans over the actions of a few.
That is the first thing I think of when I see the letters MTV. They played that video over and over and over and over and over again! It was pretty cool the first time.
Looks like the sodomites have taken over the network.
Correction... Should read:
SCUM of MTV Networks...
Christine Baranski ia Vals mom Robins Williams 1st wife..
Probably. Actually, I find the banter off-kilter.
But seeing them try to clean up a Corvette that they stored in a shipping container for two months - with dead pigs in the seats?
