NOVEMBER 9, 1989
Do you remember November 9,1989? Do you remember thousands of West Berliners waiting on their side of the wall with bottles of champagne while East Germans were breaking through?
Just wondering ... but did any Democratic president ever ask the Soviet Union to tear down the wall in Berlin. The truth is that Ronald Reagan was the president who won the Cold War. Within just a few days the Democrats and their media myrmidons are going to be working full-bore to deny him that legacy.
The Cold War, you see, was really World War III. The left isn't comfortable with all of this praise for the Republican who won World War III while they're trying to defeat the president who is presently fighting World War IV.
You need to get on the Internet to see what the loyal Democrats are saying on Democraticunderground.com. You'll find such postings as: "The hysteric media outburst has already begun, his crimes against humanity notwithstanding. The blunt idiocy of that national self-deprecating spectacle makes me sick to my stomach. Other than that, I'll proceed to celebrate the news in private. For now. " (Posted by NV1962)
And here's another post from Democraticunderground.com. This one from "mopaul."
"I don't care what killed him, Alzheimer's or the black plague, I'm glad he's dead and I don't care how many times I'm scolded or chastised for it. the day he took office was the most depressing day of my life, and i swore, that on the day he died, I'd drink a toast of celebration and figuratively piss on his grave and have said so to several Gingrich sucking Reagan worshipping dickheads. F--k Ronald Reagan, and i hope in some small way my fuck you counteracts all the bullshit we are going to be hammered with for a fucking month after the fall of this 'greeeeeaaaaaat human being'. F--k you Ronnie, here's to ya pal. see ya in hell"
Other posters on Democraticunderground.com followed with such comments as: "Yup, one less Nazi terrorist in the world with the death of Ronald Reagan"
Here's a direct link to some of those postings. It might be removed by the time you get there, but give it a shot. Today is a good day to take a close look into the black hearts of our compassionate liberal friends.
Also ... were you listening to Prairie Home Companion your local "public radio" station on Saturday? It's a live broadcast, you know. In the middle of that broadcast Garrison Keillor told the audience that Ronald Reagan had died. You could hear liberals in the audience cheering and clapping. Class act, those Democrats.
This morning I heard CNN Candy Crowley say that Reagan was the president who cut taxes but almost doubled the deficit. Not one mention of the tremendous economic growth that followed Reagan's tax cuts ... then as now with the Bush tax cuts. It would be more accurate to say that Reagan cut the taxes while congress doubled the deficit, but you're not going to hear that from the mainstream media.
Here's why. Democrats and the media are anxious to pin current budget deficits solely on George Bush. The reason for the deficits? No .. it's not because congress is spending at record levels. It's because George Bush cut taxes. To make this stick to George Bush you have to paint Reagan with the same brush.
Perhaps Reagan's greatest accomplishment was his ending of the Cold War. Now this is one accomplishment the left will never give Reagan credit for. The very moves he made to bring the Soviet Union to its knees were moves that were vehemently opposed by the left.
Stationing Pershing nuclear-tipped missiles in Western Europe would be a prime example. Reagan did this to answer threatening Soviet moves. The left said Reagan was going to hasten a nuclear war with the Soviets. The Soviets saw it differently. They saw it as resolve. It also became clear to them that this president would match them move for move. The Soviet Union soon spent itself into insolvency trying to keep up with Ronald Reagan.
Just last week Thomas Friedman at the New York Times wrote an article giving credit for setting in motion the chain of events that brought down the Soviet Union to George Bush (41), to Brent Scowcroft and James Baker, and to European leaders such as Margaret Thatcher and Francois Mitterrand. There was no mention of Ronald Reagan. Was this carelessness? Forgetfulness? Or was it an intentional effort from this New York Times writer to deny Reagan his legacy?
No doubt ... Ronald Reagan was the greatest president of my lifetime.
I bet Madeline Halfbright believes it.
That is reassuring. I felt like I was in similar thinking company.
No, I didn't make myself clear.
The nutty fringe was never the majority of the democrats in the electorate. That's partly why there are the 'fringe.'
I don't doubt that much of the media is that nutty fringe, of course. I'm talking about the average person in the electorate. While they may be misguided, they are probably nowhere near as shrill over the death of Reagan as the DU jackals are.
That's all I said. It has nothing at all to do with the election of Bush in 2004. The FR mindset that somehow 2004 will be another 1984 is misplaced. About 10-12 states are just out of reach for Republicans in a national election. Nothing will change that, I am afraid. I was recently in NYC and if anything, its more nuttie leftist than it was when I left 2 years ago. Does that mean they are happy Reagan died? Probably not. Does it mean they will vote for Kerry no matter what? You bet.
I remember crying with my fellow NCOs at the MCAS Beaufort enlisted club.
We'd all had friends die in aircraft crashes, accidental shootings, and falling overboard from the ship...
And we were seeing the victory played out before us.
It was the longest war...and the most important.
I still remember watching Reagan's Berlin speech in 1987.
"Mister Gorbachev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!"
With those few words, the world changed. I remember shivering. It's not often that you get see a moment where the world changes for the better.
The Iceland summit, where he refused to give away SDI, was probably the tipping point. To Gorbachev, the cost of staying in the arms race became "too rich for my blood" and he folded.
We must remember that the legacy of Ronald Reagan will not be cast by whatever we may say here, or in Washington in the coming days, or even in the words of the books of history yet to be written. It will be knit into the hearts of people who live in freedom, of the countless millions who formerly lived in the darkness and despair of tyranny but who now live in the light of the beacon of liberty. As long as freedom endures, as long as the value and dignity of a single human life is honored, as long as individual achievement, liberty, and equality are cherished, the legacy of Reagan lives on. I can never hope to achieve the greatness that Reagan personified, nor match his achievements in a lifetime of labor, but it is enough, somehow, to know that such greatness lived in my time.
Consider this: President Reagan won the Cold War. The man he defeated, Jimmy Carter, successfully ended the scheduling problems at the White House tennis court..
"Does that mean they are happy Reagan died? Probably not. Does it mean they will vote for Kerry no matter what? You bet."
I wouldn't say they are happy, in fact it must anger them because it reminds them of Reagan's appeal to the unwashed. The ABB democrats are the ruling class of that party and yes they are so far left, they are loony. They are most likely "playing the game" and keeping their mouths shuts. This has resulted becuase the republican party has moved to the center, driving the dems to the loony left. That's why we have so many moderate republican and conservative arguments here on FR.
The biggest gain from moving to the middle is that the dems have been forced to the extreme left!
I absolutely, 100% agree with you.
However, the media is never gonna give equal coverage to a--holes like the people on DU.
They know damn well that publishing these callous statements would hurt their cause.
They'll conveniently "forget" about 'em.
Perhaps, but the day he WON the war was when he stood firm at the Iceland summit. He did NOT give up SDI, and that was the day we won.
Although an equally compelling case is that his first GREAT decision was his choice of Bill Casey as CIA Director. Casey was the best we ever had at Langley - we sure could use someone like him now.
I never realized that. I guess he wasn't a complete failure after all.
To liberals, life is a mercy granted by the state, not a gift from God.
The LEFTISTS can't possibly dislike RR more than I dislike X42, however if I am still around at his death, I will refrain from saying anything about him for I will have nothing good to say, and I would NOT want to hurt those that loved him. Demonstrating just one significant difference between LEFTISTS and CONSERVATIVES.
The only complaint I have about Reagan's CIA is one that applies to the CIA across the board...
They actually believed the USSR's own economic figures. They never thought that EVERYONE would lie to the boss...even when the consequences of telling the truth were fatal.
To the Left, politics is EVERYTHING. Consider the reaction of Nick Berg's father - an extreme leftist - to his son's gruesome murder at the hands of muslim scumbags: instead of blaming the killers, he blamed Bush and Rumsfeld.
The Left in America today is as dangerous an enemy to our way of life as the Islamofascists. They must be defeated at all costs, even if it requires an armed insurrection to do it.
I would be in jail this morning for assault had I been there...and a few of these classy people would have had a bloody nose. Wonder if Keillor said something like, "shame on you"
God Bless Ronald Reagan...Rest in Peace.
You have to remember that these twits don't really say such things in the plane of existence we know as 'reality.' These are merely the words they're thinking as they "handle" their "bobbleheads."
It's a Trostkyite strategy - gain control of the institutions, but still pose as the counterculture, thus making future gains a "triumph of the rebellion" rather than a "tightening of the grip of the state".
It's an absolutely true story, and especialy relevantas we here all the negative comments about how Reagan wasn't interested in the samll details..he was happy to delegate..When the Carter crowd moved into the WH, seems all the left/libs were determined to get their share of the perks...one of which was use of the WH tennis court..seems one day Carter heard a loud argument among several of his staffers about scheduled court time, so, to avoid further problems, he took the sign-up book and kept in on his desk for several months...anyone who wanted to book court time had to do it through Carter..
